Book Global Empowerment of Women

Download or read book Global Empowerment of Women written by Carolyn M. Elliott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-12-12 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The empowerment of women is a broadly endorsed strategy for solving a host of difficult problems, from child poverty to gender violence to international development. The seventeen international scholars in this multi-disciplinary volume offer thoughtful critiques of the notion of empowerment based on their studies in twenty countries in all regions of the world. The comparative introduction places concepts of empowerment in the context of models of the market and of community, showing how contradictions in these models as they are enacted on the ground provide both spaces and constraints for women. The chapters consider opportunities for women in the context of globalization, resurgent nationalism and politicized religion, cultures of masculinity, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. They show how initiatives at national or global levels are transformed by local cultures and power structures, and demonstrate the fruitfulness of tensions between universal values of human rights and contextualized understandings. This landmark, multi-disciplinary collection of original studies by distinguished international feminist scholars will be an essential addition to the fields of Political Science, Women’s Studies, Economics, Sociology, International Development, and Environmental Studies.

Book The Changing Industry and Skill Mix of Canada s International Trade

Download or read book The Changing Industry and Skill Mix of Canada s International Trade written by D. Peter Dungan and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses Input-Output analysis to examine the industry and skill mix of Canadian exports and imports as they stood in 1997 and how this mix has changed over the past three decades. Section 2 of the report describes the data and calculation methods used. Section 3 contains a literature review. Section 4 examines how the place of exports has changed in the Canadian economy since 1961, and how the industrial output and employment mix of exports has altered over that time. Changes in the employment mix are decomposed into four main sub-components. Then, adding industry skill-mix data, it discusses the education/skill mix of Canadian exports in recent years and determines what changes may have occurred in this mix over time. Section 5 repeats the analysis in Section 4, but for imports. Section 6 reports the conclusions and main findings. Several appendices present details of the calculations, sensitivity tests and more detailed industrial results.

Section 4 analyzes new industry-level data designed to show whether the post-FTA changes in trade mix are consistent with interprovincial trade creation, trade diversion, or neither. Finally, Section 5 summarizes the two strands of evidence and sets some objectives for future research.

Book Commerce International Le Commerce Interprovincial Et la Croissance Des Provinces Canadiennes

Download or read book Commerce International Le Commerce Interprovincial Et la Croissance Des Provinces Canadiennes written by Serge Coulombe and published by Canadian Museum of Civilization/Musee Canadien Des Civilisations. This book was released on 2003 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an empirical analysis of the comparative evolution of interprovincial & international trade and their effects on regional growth for the Canadian provinces since 1981. It first establishes the trend in the relationship between the ratios of interprovincial & international trade to gross domestic product, revealing a sharp break that occurred around 1991. The analysis casts doubt on the pure diversion model often used in trade modelling. The second part uses a conditional convergence-growth model to estimate the respective long-run effects of interprovincial & international trade on Canadian regional economies, specifically in relation to productivity, relative gross domestic product per capita, and job creation. The final chapter discusses implications of the results for regional economies & economic policy issues.

Book Technologie Et Demande de Comp tences

Download or read book Technologie Et Demande de Comp tences written by Surendra Gera and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1999 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the effect of technological change on the relative demand for skilled workers across Canadian industries. Using data from a number of Canadian labour market surveys, the paper examines whether skill intensity has risen across industries over the 1981-1994 period, and whether biased technological change is the main cause of the shift in demand toward skilled workers. The paper develops two industry-based skill measures: one based on the skill classification identified in the National Occupational Classification (NOC), and the other based on the skill classification scheme proposed by Wolff and Baumol. It then combines data on skills with four industry-level measures of technology: the stock of research and development (R&D), the stock of patents used by the industry, total factor productivity, and the age of the capital stock.
