Book Dementia Praecox and Paraphrenia

Download or read book Dementia Praecox and Paraphrenia written by Emil Kraepelin and published by Bloomsbury Continuum. This book was released on 2002 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin (1856 - 1926) is justly called the father of modern psychiatry. He was the first to identify dementia praecox (schizophrenia) and manic-depression, and he pioneered the use of drugs to treat mental illness. He was also joint discoverer of Alzheimer's disease - which he named after his collaborator, Dr Alois Alzheimer. Kraepelin presented these and other discoveries in successive editions of his Psychiatrie: Ein Lehrbuch (definitive 8th edition also now available from Thoemmes Press). Much of this gigantic textbook can only be read in the original German; but parts of it were translated into English, and they had a very profound influence on the development of world psychiatry for the rest of the 20th century.

Book Late Onset Schizophrenia

Download or read book Late Onset Schizophrenia written by Robert Howard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1999 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia, which starts in middle age or late life, has been described as 'the darkest area of psychiatry.' It is certainly controversial, with much disagreement about cut-off ages, diagnostic criteria and nomenclature. The contributors to this unique and very important book represent views from Europe and North America as well as Australia, Japan, and Nepal; they come from backgrounds of clinical practice and research. The contributors and editors were motivated by common aims: to review current international knowledge about late onset schizophrenia, to debate issues of heterogenity, gender, brain maturation and aging, putative structural and functional cerebral substrates for psychosis, to reach consensus on diagnosis and terminology, and to future research directions. The resulting book is an unqualified success which as well as being invaluable in old age psychiatry, sheds light on all aspects of schizophrenia treatment and research.

Download or read book Atypical Antipsychotics written by Bart A. Ellenbroek and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of chlorpromazine in 1953, and haloperidol in 1958, into clinical practice dramatically altered the therapy of schizophrenic patients. Although representing by no means a cure for this severe psychiatric ill ness, it allowed, for the first time, to adequately control the severe hallu cinations and delusional beliefs which prevent these patients from leading a more or less independent life. Indeed these antipsychotics (and the many congeners that were to follow) significantly reduced the number ofchronic schizophrenic inpatients in psychiatric clinics all over the world. However soon after their introduction it became clear that, like all other available drugs, antipsychotics were by no means miracle drugs. In fact, two major problems appeared. First, the antipsychotics had very little effect on the so-called negative or defect symptoms, like social isolation, apathy and anhedonia, and secondly virtually all antipsychotics produced a number of side-effects, of which the neurological (often called extra pyramidal) side-effects were the most troublesome. Especially the tardive dyskinesia, which occurred in about 15 to 20% of the patients after pro longed treatment, represented a major problem in the treatment of schizo phrenic patients.

Download or read book Secondary Schizophrenia written by Perminder S. Sachdev and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia may not be a single disease, but the result of a diverse set of related conditions. Modern neuroscience is beginning to reveal some of the genetic and environmental underpinnings of schizophrenia; however, an approach less well travelled is to examine the medical disorders that produce symptoms resembling schizophrenia. This book is the first major attempt to bring together the diseases that produce what has been termed 'secondary schizophrenia'. International experts from diverse backgrounds ask the questions: does this medical disorder, or drug, or condition cause psychosis? If yes, does it resemble schizophrenia? What mechanisms form the basis of this relationship? What implications does this understanding have for aetiology and treatment? The answers are a feast for clinicians and researchers of psychosis and schizophrenia. They mark the next step in trying to meet the most important challenge to modern neuroscience – understanding and conquering this most mysterious of human diseases.

Book Manic Depressive Insanity and Paranoia

Download or read book Manic Depressive Insanity and Paranoia written by Emil Kraepelin and published by Lushena Books. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latter part Of the book is devoted to an account Of Paranoia, which title is' employed in the narrowest sense and is restricted in application to those forms, which are very Often described as true or non-hallucinatory Paranoia. The more numerous allied and hallucinatory forms are mainly grouped by Kraepelin under the title Paraphrenia, though some may be included under Paranoid Dementia Praecox, to which dis order its relationship is undoubtedly very close. Further, it may be added that as true Paranoia has also affinities to some varieties Of Mania, all these forms Of insanity seem to merge into one another at their SO - called boundaries or limits, as do the colours Of the spectrum, though the fully developed and typical forms are as distinct from one another and as recognisable as the primary colours. The medical profession is under a debt Of gratitude to Dr Mary Barclay for her faithful rendering into English of these classical studies. She has now completed the translation Of Professor Kraepelin's careful descriptions Of those forms Of mental disorder which are commonly known as The Psychoses, namely, Dementia Praecox, Paraphrenia, manic-depressive Insanity, and Paranoia. These disorders form a definite group and provide the most effective illustrations Of Professor Kraepelin's accurate methods Of analysing and investigating mental disease. His orderly descriptions will be found Of great value to the medical Officers Of our mental hospitals, and to all engaged in the study Of clinical psychiatry, particularly to those reading for a Diploma in Psychological Medicine.
