Book A Christian and a Democrat

Download or read book A Christian and a Democrat written by John F. Woolverton and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, when asked at a press conference about the roots of his political philosophy, responded simply, “I am a Christian and a Democrat.” This is the story of how the first informed the second—how his upbringing in the Episcopal Church and matriculation at the Groton School under legendary educator and minister Endicott Peabody molded Roosevelt into a leader whose politics were fundamentally shaped by the Social Gospel. A work begun by religious historian John Woolverton (1926 2014) and recently completed by James Bratt, A Christian and a Democrat is an engaging analysis of the surprisingly spiritual life of one of the most consequential presidents in US history. Reading Woolverton’s account of FDR’s response to the toxic demagoguery of his day will reassure readers today that a constructive way forward is possible for Christians, for Americans, and for the world.

Book The Divided Mind of the Black Church

Download or read book The Divided Mind of the Black Church written by Raphael G. Warnock and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing look at the identity and mission of the Black church What is the true nature and mission of the church? Is its proper Christian purpose to save souls, or to transform the social order? This question is especially fraught when the church is one built by an enslaved people and formed, from its beginning, at the center of an oppressed community’s fight for personhood and freedom. Such is the central tension in the identity and mission of the Black church in the United States. For decades the Black church and Black theology have held each other at arm’s length. Black theology has emphasized the role of Christian faith in addressing racism and other forms of oppression, arguing that Jesus urged his disciples to seek the freedom of all peoples. Meanwhile, the Black church, even when focused on social concerns, has often emphasized personal piety rather than social protest. With the rising influence of white evangelicalism, biblical fundamentalism, and the prosperity gospel, the divide has become even more pronounced. In The Divided Mind of the Black Church, Raphael G. Warnock, Senior Pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the spiritual home of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., traces the historical significance of the rise and development of Black theology as an important conversation partner for the Black church. Calling for honest dialogue between Black and womanist theologians and Black pastors, this fresh theological treatment demands a new look at the church’s essential mission.

Download or read book The Way of Jesus written by Toby Jones and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countless books have been written about the impending death of the institutional church, but this one both celebrates the resurrection that will follow and lights the way toward a new kind of spiritual community. The Way of Jesus identifies seven principles upon which authentic and vibrant Christian communities can be built in today's diverse and ever shrinking world. Toby Jones traveled across the country, from San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church to New York's Church of the Holy Apostles, and from Chicago's Wicker Park Grace to Minneapolis's Solomon's Porch. He sojourned with seven communities in all and conducted in-depth interviews with their leaders and participants to reveal what distinguishes resurrection communities from those in precipitous decline. In The Way of Jesus, Jones draws both from the scriptures and from such fresh thinkers as Brian McLaren, Dallas Willard, Doug Pagitt, and Shane Claiborne, offering genuine hope and practical direction to the millions of spiritually homeless. But just as importantly, The Way of Jesus offers a clear path to struggling, shrinking congregations who desire to re-form themselves in a way that is both more faithful to the Gospel and compelling to post-modern generations, who have long since abandoned the institutional church.

Book It s the End of the Church As We Know It

Download or read book It s the End of the Church As We Know It written by Marc Lawson and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking in favor of the power of God and against the traditions of men, author Marc Lawson believes that signs and wonders, miracles and demonstrations of God s power are desperately needed to defeat the onslaught of darkness our culture is accepting and endorsing more and more each day. It s the End of Church as We Know It reflects a growing dissatisfaction with the current state of the church, saying there must be more God has for Christians outside of the box. Lawson is concerned that new believers are not only being catered to with faddish trends, but they are not being invited to experience a supernatural God. Only the power of the Holy Spirit and the manifestation of His gifts, says Lawson, will fulfill God s destiny for His church.

Book Faithonomics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Torkel Brekke
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016-10-15
  • ISBN : 0190694750
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Faithonomics written by Torkel Brekke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faithonomics uses economic theory to provide a new and unorthodox view of religion in today's world. Drawing on state-of-the-art research and on case studies from around the globe, this book shows that religion should be analysed as a market similar to markets for other goods and services, like bottled water or haircuts. Faithonomics is about today's religious markets, but in sweeping detours through the histories of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism, Brekke shows us the religious markets of the past, although these were sometimes heavily regulated by states. He argues that government 'control' over religious markets is often the cause of unforeseen and negative consequences. Many of today's problems related to religion, like religious terrorism or rent-seeking by religious political parties, are easier to understand if we think like economists. Religious markets work best when they are relatively free. Religious organizations should be free to sell their products without unnecessary restrictions, but we have no good reason to grant them privileges in the form of subsidies or tax-breaks.
