Book excerpt: Recently the history of science in early modern Europe has been both invigorated and obscured by divisions between scholars of different schools. One school tends to claim that rigorous textual analysis provides the key to the development of science, whereas others tend to focus on the social and cultural contexts within which disciplines grew. This volume challenges such divisions, suggesting that multiple historical approaches are both legitimate and mutually complementary."--

Book Das Ende des Hermetismus

Download or read book Das Ende des Hermetismus written by Martin Mulsow and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2002 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: When did the Renaissance end? With provocative precision, Frances Yates said it ended in 1614, the year in which Isaac Casaubon exposed the allegedly ancient writings of Hermes Trismegistos as a forgery from late antiquity. However Casaubon was not the first person to produce arguments against the Corpus Hermeticum. During the 1580s in Venice and Padua there had already been an intense debate regarding the date, a debate which is documented in this volume. The essays, written by internationally renowned scholars of the Renaissance, place this in the context of recent developments in the philosophy of nature by Telesio and Patrizi and reveal the ideological interests of hermetists and anti-hermetists. Thus the 'end of the Renaissance' and the 'end of hermeticism' came considerably earlier than researchers had assumed up to now.

Book Space Imagination and the Cosmos from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period

Download or read book Space Imagination and the Cosmos from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period written by Frederik A. Bakker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a much needed, historically accurate narrative of the development of theories of space up to the beginning of the eighteenth century. It studies conceptions of space that were implicitly or explicitly entailed by ancient, medieval and early modern representations of the cosmos. The authors reassess Alexandre Koyré’s groundbreaking work From the Closed World to the Infinite Universe (1957) and they trace the permanence of arguments to be found throughout the Middle Ages and beyond. By adopting a long timescale, this book sheds new light on the continuity between various cosmological representations and their impact on the ontology and epistemology of space. Readers may explore the work of a variety of authors including Aristotle, Epicurus, Henry of Ghent, John Duns Scotus, John Wyclif, Peter Auriol, Nicholas Bonet, Francisco Suárez, Francesco Patrizi, Giordano Bruno, Libert Froidmont, Marin Mersenne, Pierre Gassendi, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Samuel Clarke. We see how reflections on space, imagination and the cosmos were the product of a plurality of philosophical traditions that found themselves confronted with, and enriched by, various scientific and theological challenges which induced multiple conceptual adaptations and innovations. This volume is a useful resource for historians of philosophy, those with an interest in the history of science, and particularly those seeking to understand the historical background of the philosophy of space.

Book Echoes of an Invisible World

Download or read book Echoes of an Invisible World written by Jacomien Prins and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Echoes of an Invisible World Jacomien Prins offers an account of the transformation of the notion of Pythagorean world harmony during the Renaissance and the role of the Italian philosophers Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) and Francesco Patrizi (1529-1597) in redefining the relationship between cosmic order and music theory. By concentrating on Ficino’s and Patrizi’s work, the book chronicles the emergence of a new musical reality between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, a reality in which beauty and the complementary idea of celestial harmony were gradually replaced by concepts of expressivity and emotion, that is to say, by a form of idealism that was ontologically more subjective than the original Pythagorean and Platonic metaphysics.
