Book excerpt: Il lavoro progettuale condotto per la città di Acerra ha rappresentato, per gli studenti dell’ultimo anno del corso di studi in Architettura 5UE, un esperimento di grande rilevanza, dal punto di vista progettuale e professionale, verso lo sviluppo di un approccio teso a trovare una risposta adeguata e concreta alle molteplici necessità poste dalla realtà del contesto in cui opera. La pubblicazione raccoglie gli esiti del lavoro svolto nell’arco dell’anno accademico 2021-2022, ponendo in evidenza la molteplicità di aspetti e temi progettuali affrontati, così come la varietà delle soluzioni proposte. La struttura del libro rispecchia tale approccio sperimentale, a partire dall’esplorazione di alcuni temi e metodi preliminari, esaminati nella sezione “Saggi”; proseguendo attraverso lo strumento del “mapping” e la raccolta degli esiti del confronto con l’amministrazione comunale, l’ambiente e le persone che abitano quei luoghi; giungendo, infine, alla messa a sistema e ad una “sintesi” delle informazioni e delle indagini effettuate attraverso le proposte progettuali, descritte nella sezione “Progetti”. Ciascun tema progettuale prevede un approfondimento teorico, attraverso due saggi introduttivi e numerose declinazioni progettuali che provano in maniera alternativa a fornire possibili scenari per la città. Per risolvere le criticità esistenti, ma anche per valorizzare le potenzialità e i diversi patrimoni del territorio di Acerra, le proposte progettuali sono state costruite attraverso un meccanismo di innesto e connessioni nell’esistente, non orientato alla definizione di una forma compiuta e di una funzione predeterminata, ma che, al contrario, ha consentito di lavorare su un’idea di forma aperta, che ha riutilizzato quanto esiste, che ha incluso molteplici possibilità di uso e che ha cambiato continuamente la propria perimetrazione, estendendosi e inglobando pezzi urbani di diversa natura. Scenari di nuovi possibili significati e nuove trasformazioni urbane sono, dunque, il risultato di questo lavoro, composto da diversi livelli di approfondimento legati all’idea generale di Acerra come città di spazi dell’apprendimento diffusi.

Seeking to expand the scope of contemporary moral and political philosophy, Raymond Geuss here presents essays bound by a shared skepticism about a particular way of thinking about what is important in human life--a way of thinking that, in his view, is characteristic of contemporary Western societies and isolates three broad categories of things as important: subjective individual preferences, knowledge, and restrictions on actions that affect other people (restrictions often construed as ahistorical laws). He sets these categories in a wider context and explores various human phenomena--including poetry, art, religion, and certain kinds of history and social criticism--that do not fit easily into these categories. As its title suggests, this book seeks a place outside conventional ethics. Following a brief introduction, Geuss sets out his main concerns with a focus on ethics and politics. He then expands these themes by discussing freedom, virtue, the good life, and happiness. Next he examines Theodor Adorno's views on the relation between suffering and knowledge, the nature of religion, and the role of history in giving us critical distances from existing identities. The first part of the volume reviews theoretical motivations behind the growing disdain for the political party. In surveying the parties' lengthy attempt to gain legitimacy, particular attention is devoted to the cultural and political conditions which led to their emergence on the ground' and then to their political and theoretical acceptance as the sole master in the chain of delegation. The second part traces the evolution of the party's organization and public confidence against the backdrop of the transition from industrial to post-industrial societies. The book suggests that, in the post-war period, parties shifted from a golden age of organizational development and positive reception by public opinion towards a more difficult relationship with society as it moved into post industrialism. Parties were unable to master societal change and thus moved towards the state to recover resources they were no longer able to extract from their constituencies. Parties have become richer and more powerful thanks to their interpenetration into the state, but they have paid' for their pervasive presence in society and the state with a declining legitimacy. Even if some changes have been introduced recently in party organizations to counteract their decline, they seem to have become ineffective; even worse, they have dampened democratic standing inside and outside parties, favouring plebiscitary tendencies. The party today is caught in a dramatic contradiction. It has become a sort of Leviathan with clay feet: very powerful thanks to the resources it gets from the state and to its control of the societal and state spheres, but very weak in terms of legitimacy and confidence in the eyes of the mass public. However, it is argued that there is still no alternative to the party. Democracy is still inextricably linked to the party system.

Such an account serves to underline in distinctive fashion why democracy needs its partisans, and puts in relief some of the key trends of contemporary politics.
