Book To Preach Deliverance to the Captives

Download or read book To Preach Deliverance to the Captives written by Ryan C. McIlhenny and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bourne was one of the early American republic’s first immediate abolitionists, an influential figure who paved the way for the campaign against slavery in the antebellum period. His approach to reform was shaped by a conservative Protestant outlook that became increasingly hostile to Catholicism. In To Preach Deliverance to the Captives, Ryan C. McIlhenny examines the interplay of Bourne’s pioneering efforts in abolitionism and his intensely anti-Catholic views. McIlhenny portrays Bourne as both a radical and a conservative, a reformer who desired to get back to the roots of Christianity for the purpose of completely dismantling slavery. Bourne’s commentary on a variety of controversial topics—slavery, race, and citizenship; the role of women; Christianity and republicanism; the importance of the Bible; and the place of the church in civil society—put him at the center of many debates. He remains a complex figure: a polymath situated within the political, social, and cultural possibilities of an early republic that he was eager to play a part in shaping. Bourne’s religious radicalism gave rise to his hope for an emerging post-revolutionary republic that would focus mainly on its religious foundations. The strength of the American nation, in Bourne’s mind, rested not only on institutions indicative of a republican form of government but also on a pure Christianity, exemplified best in historical Protestantism. To Bourne, the future of the fledgling nation depended not only on principles and institutions but also on the activism of Protestant leaders like himself.

Book From Bondage to Freedom

Download or read book From Bondage to Freedom written by David Sampong and published by CreateSpace . This book was released on 2015-04-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you in bondage and want to be free? Have you been delivered and feel like things are still the same way as they used to be when you were under oppression? Have you been asking the question, what happens after I am delivered? I am free, now what? Then this book is for you. In the age when freedom is the topic of the day, I believe understanding this freedom is very important. This freedom has been widely misunderstood from the world out there to the church. Many think freedom is an excuse to do whatever they want. Is this the real meaning of freedom or not? Because we do not appreciate the freedom given to us we misuse or mishandle it. In this book, David describes the process to freedom, explaining what happens at every stage of the process to freedom. He lists and explains each stage in detail and cites examples from the Bible. He also emphasizes what one is expected to do once he or she is free.

Book Armies of Deliverance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth R. Varon
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 019086060X
  • Pages : 529 pages

Download or read book Armies of Deliverance written by Elizabeth R. Varon and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loyal Americans marched off to war in 1861 not to conquer the South but to liberate it. In Armies of Deliverance, Elizabeth Varon offers both a sweeping narrative of the Civil War and a bold new interpretation of Union and Confederate war aims. Lincoln's Union coalition sought to deliver the South from slaveholder tyranny and deliver to it the blessings of modern civilization. Over the course of the war, supporters of black freedom built the case that slavery was the obstacle to national reunion and that emancipation would secure military victory and benefit Northern and Southern whites alike. To sustain their morale, Northerners played up evidence of white Southern Unionism, of antislavery progress in the slaveholding border states, and of disaffection among Confederates. But the Union's emphasis on Southern deliverance served, ironically, not only to galvanize loyal Amer icans but also to galvanize disloyal ones. Confederates, fighting to establish an independent slaveholding republic, scorned the Northern promise of liberation and argued that the emancipation of blacks was synonymous with the subjugation of the white South.
