Young and joyous, we may leave behind every carking care, while we revel in marvelous tales of good kings, and wicked queens, weird vampires and storm demons, mystic spells and miraculous happenings, such as we children loved to hear, as we clu'stered round daddy's knee in the twilight - tales like those which Hans Andersen and dear old Grimm gave to the world, tales enshrined forever in that holy of holies, the heart of a child - {hat joyous little creature whom we remember smilingly, but with a pang of regret, that vanished Child of Yesterday, who was I; and the child who was - you. Book excerpt: DALMATIA: The Land Where East Meets West is MAUDE M. HOLBACH's second book of travel in Eastern Europe. First published in 1910, this is an anthropological travel journal of an often-overlooked kingdom, where Mrs. Holbach and her husband met with historians and government officials, all of whom were gracious and anxious to share the wonders of their country. The Holbachs journeyed to the major cities and historical sites in Dalmatia: Zara, Spalato, the Riviera of the Seven Castles, and the island of Lesina, among others. Accompanying Mrs. Holbach's historical accounts are Mr. Holbach's illustrative photographs, giving readers a chance to explore Dalmatia for themselves. Anyone interested in travel literature or the history of Eastern European countries will find this book an easy and informative read.

Book My Mother s Side

Download or read book My Mother s Side written by Daniel Friedman and published by . This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My Mother's Side: A Journey to Dalmatia" is a travel-memoir set in the exquisite southern Mediterranean city of Split, Croatia, on the Adriatic Sea, where the author, on a bicycle trip with his son, accidentially discovers his ancestral village -- Stobrec -- the birthplace of his maternal grandmother, an ancient and thriving fishing village inhabited, shockingly, by dozens of his cousins who warmly welcome him into their lives. This profound discovery of a beautiful family and a simple way of life takes place amidst the malfeasance and fear of the financial crisis of 2008 and a period of challenging midlife transition. The author would learn from his Dalmatian kin what matters -- family, love, and community -- and how to deal with adversity. The author is a noted travel writer whose work has been praised by the New York Times, Gourmet, and the Wine Advocate.

Download or read book Venice and the Slavs written by Larry Wolff and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the nature of Venetian rule over the Slavs of Dalmatia during the eighteenth century, focusing on the cultural elaboration of an ideology of empire that was based on a civilizing mission toward the Slavs. The book argues that the Enlightenment within the “Adriatic Empire” of Venice was deeply concerned with exploring the economic and social dimensions of backwardness in Dalmatia, in accordance with the evolving distinction between “Western Europe” and “Eastern Europe” across the continent. It further argues that the primitivism attributed to Dalmatians by the Venetian Enlightenment was fundamental to the European intellectual discovery of the Slavs. The book begins by discussing Venetian literary perspectives on Dalmatia, notably the drama of Carlo Goldoni and the memoirs of Carlo Gozzi. It then studies the work that brought the subject of Dalmatia to the attention of the European Enlightenment: the travel account of the Paduan philosopher Alberto Fortis, which was translated from Italian into English, French, and German. The next two chapters focus on the Dalmatian inland mountain people called the Morlacchi, famous as “savages” throughout Europe in the eighteenth century. The Morlacchi are considered first as a concern of Venetian administration and then in relation to the problem of the “noble savage,” anthropologically studied and poetically celebrated. The book then describes the meeting of these administrative and philosophical discourses concerning Dalmatia during the final decades of the Venetian Republic. It concludes by assessing the legacy of the Venetian Enlightenment for later perspectives on Dalmatia and the South Slavs from Napoleonic Illyria to twentieth-century Yugoslavia.
