Book Dehradoon An Illustrated Journey of A City

Download or read book Dehradoon An Illustrated Journey of A City written by Mauli Shree Mishra and published by COPAL Publishing Group. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is remembrance to the fading memories of a city and takes its readers on a journey of 'Vale of Doon'. It tries to tell the story of Doon Valley through its narratives and illustrations, which we have often found ourself wondering about when passing by an old deteriorating structure hiding beneath green monsoon moss in a forgotten part of the city, sitting by a canal or an abandoned bridge watching the setting sun through the blue‐tangerine skies or while taking a walk through a forest bathed in wintery sunshine. Doon Valley has been nothing less than a magical land with its inhabitants of kinds who have coexisted since time immemorial, but this coexistence of man and nature is now threatened by insensitive and unscientific development. The book urges its readers to reflect and act in order to protect their valley for future generations and times to come. The book tries to put together the otherwise ignored fragments of the city heritage that still stand, awaiting to be torn apart by the insensitive developmental activity but hoping to be rescued and bring people closer to the Dehra of old times.

Book A Town Called Dehra

Download or read book A Town Called Dehra written by Ruskin Bond and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2008-08-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this delightful collection; Ruskin Bond introduces us to the Dehradun he knows intimately and loves unreservedly—the town that he had spent many years of his childhood and youth in. A town which; when he knew it; was one of pony-drawn tongas and rickshaws; a town fond of gossip but tolerant of human foibles; a town of lush lichi trees; charming winter gardens and cool streams; a small town; a sleepy town; a town called ‘Dehra’. With classic stories and poems like ‘Masterji’; ‘Growing up with Trees’and ‘A Song for Lost Friends’ and previously unpublished treasures like ‘Silver Screen’; ‘Dilaram Bazaar’ and ‘Lily of the Valley’; this anthology is replete with journal entries; extracts from the author’s memoirs and; of course; poetry; non-fiction and stories set in or inspired by Dehra. Evocative; wistful and witty as only Ruskin Bond can be; A Town Called Dehra is a celebration of a dearly-loved town as well as an elegy for a way of life gone extinct.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North east India is a global biodiversity hotspot but a quite understudied area. Forest loss has always been problematic in the area. Using Landsat satellite data from three periods (70s, 80s/90s and 2010s), forest loss is assessed in sample protected areas and other sites in the study area, processing is undertaken using image processing and standard GIS tools. The landscape metrics of selected sites are assessed using the widely used program FRAGSTATS. Drivers of forest loss are central in the discussion of the study.

Book Vegetation of Central Asia and Environs

Download or read book Vegetation of Central Asia and Environs written by Dilfuza Egamberdieva and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Asia is a large and understudied region of varied geography, ranging from the high passes and mountains of Tian Shan, to the vast deserts of Kyzyl Kum, Taklamakan to the grassy treeles steppes. This region is faced with adverse conditions, as much of the land is too dry or rugged for farming. Additionally, the rich specific and intraspecific diversity of fruit trees and medicinal plants is threatened by overgrazing, oil and mineral extraction, and poaching. Countless species from the approximately 20 ecosystems and 6000 plant taxa are now rare and endangered. Traditional vegetation studies in this region are far from adequate to handle complex issues such as soil mass movement, soil sodicity and salinity, biodiversity conservation, and grazing management. However, data analysis using a Geographical Information System (GIS) tool provides new insights into the vegetation of this region and opens up new opportunities for long-term sustainable management. While vegetation planning can occur at a property scale, it is often necessary for certain factors, such as salinity, to be dealt with on a regional scale to ensure their effective management. GIS increases the effectiveness and accuracy of vegetation planning in a region. Such regional planning will also greatly increases biodiversity values. This book systematically explores these issues and discuses new applications and approaches for overcoming these issues, including the application of GIS techniques for sustainable management and planning. Professional researchers as well as students and teachers of agriculture and ecology will find this volume to be an integral resource for studying the vegetation of Central Asia.

Book Entomology in the Doon Valley Garhwal Himalaya A Stronghold for Insect Research

Download or read book Entomology in the Doon Valley Garhwal Himalaya A Stronghold for Insect Research written by B.K.Tyagi and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entomology in the Doon Valley (Garhwal Region) is a unique journey into annals of the country’s most fascinating and highly entomofauna rich habitat – the Dehra Dun or the Doon Valley, tucked in the cosy climate of the foothills of the lower Himalayan region. Notwithstanding an unprecedented quantum of fragmented information available on the insects of the Doon Valley, courtesy various different long term research programmes carried out at the three major research institutions, viz., the Forest Research Institute & Colleges, the Zoological Survey of India and The Dayanand Anglo Vedic (PG) College, all located in Dehra Dun, yet no single entomological treatise detailing all the insect orders, supported by relevant local references, was ever offered to have a firsthand knowledge on the Doon Valley’s buoyant research tradition. For the first time, therefore, the present treatment comes forward to satiate a nature-lover’s desire to know completely about their own insect fauna. Besides offering an uncanny history of research, along with a string of researchers and institutions engaged in entomological research in the Doon Valley, the book describes entomologic characteristics of all the 32 Orders of Class Insecta, with emphasis on research contributions on the local and endemic fauna. To facilitate our understanding, the book offers as an example inventories of the extant taxa of a couple of orders and, still more importantly, bio-bibliographies of a few Doon Valley entomologists, as inspirational life stories for the beginners. The Book, written in a lucid language, will surely serve a good purpose for both the undergraduates, postgraduates and research scholars engaged in insect research, on one hand, and the professional entomologists not only from the Grahwal region but also across the country and beyond, on the other.
