Book Enlisting Public Cooperation in Keeping Out Foreign Animal and Plant Pests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Enlisting Public Cooperation in Keeping Out Foreign Animal and Plant Pests Classic Reprint written by U. S. Agricultural Research Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enlisting Public Cooperation in Keeping Out Foreign Animal and Plant Pests Agricultural pests cost the people of the United States $9 billion a year, and most of this expense is chargeable to insects, disease organisms, and other small destructive agents from other lands that have come as stowaways in transport and travel. Trained inspectors and quarantine officers guard our ports of entry and achieve an impressive record of protecting agriculture against new pest invasions. But the task is too great for this thin line of specialists alone, and the United States necessarily relies also on the public to help prevent the entry of agricultural pests. Laws and regulations spell out public responsibilities. The U. S. Department of Agriculture is making special efforts to broaden public understanding as an approach to tightening defense against costly pest invasions. Travelers' baggage in particular is known to be a hazard. People far more often fail to do their part from lack of understanding or from thoughtless ness than from any deliberate intent to foil the law. Book Animal Health at the Crossroads

Download or read book Animal Health at the Crossroads written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-12-17 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The confirmed case of "mad cow" disease (BSE) in June 2005 illustrates the economic impact of disease outbreaks, as additional countries closed their markets to U.S. beef and beef products. Emerging diseases also threaten public health-11 out of 12 of the major global disease outbreaks over the last decade were from zoonotic agents (that spread from animals to humans). Animal Health at the Crossroads: Preventing, Detecting, and Diagnosing Animal Diseases finds that, in general, the U.S. animal health framework has been slow to take advantage of state-of-the-art technologies being used now to protect public health; better diagnostic tests for identifying all animal diseases should be made a priority. The report also recommends that the nation establish a high-level, authoritative, and accountable coordinating mechanism to engage and enhance partnerships among local, state, and federal agencies, and the private sector.

Book Biological Research

Download or read book Biological Research written by Nancy Kingsbury and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is the most highly infectious animal disease known: nearly 100% of exposed animals become infected with it. The Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC), on the northern tip of Long Island, NY, is the only facility in the U.S. that studies the live FMD virus. The U.S. Dept. of Ag. (USDA) was responsible for the PIADC from its opening in the 1950s until June 2003, when USDA transferred responsibility for it to the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS). On Jan. 19, 2006, DHS announced that it would construct and operate a new facility. This report reviewed DHS's risk assessment. It specifically assessed the evidence DHS used to conclude that work with FMD can be conducted as safely on the U.S. mainland as on Plum Island, NY.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
