Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One girl’s strong spirit and love of soccer drive her to persevere in the face of adversity in this lively and engaging novel. Irene loves soccer, a passion she inherited from her Italian father. She’s thrilled by the sound and feel of the ball exploding off her foot for a shot at the goal. At school back in Missouri, she was one of the top players on her girls’ team. But things are different in Merano, Italy, where bilingual Irene and her family have come for a yearlong stay. There’s no soccer team for girls in the small, very traditional Alpine town. Irene decides to join the highly competitive boys’ team, but she has little idea what she’s getting herself into. First, she must prove herself to the strict coach, the “mister.” And her teammates make it clear they don’t want her on the field. Especially Matteo, the team’s star player, who goes out of his way to make Irene unwelcome. But Irene does not give up easily, even when the disapproval of her Italian grandmother and the doubts of her new classmates—including her best friend, Giulia—threaten to undermine her confidence. Author Kristin Wolden Nitz has created a complex adolescent character. Readers will root for Irene as she struggles to find her place on the team and in a new country. The story also offers a fascinating, and often humorous, look at a collision of cultures and lively descriptions of fast-paced action on the soccer field.

Book The Ethics of Self Defense

Download or read book The Ethics of Self Defense written by Christian Coons and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen new essays collected in this volume address questions concerning the ethics of self-defense, most centrally when and to what extent the use of defensive force, especially lethal force, can be justified. Scholarly interest in this topic reflects public concern stemming from controversial cases of the use of force by police, and military force exercised in the name of defending against transnational terrorism. The contributors pay special attention to determining when a threat is liable to defensive harm, though doubts about this emphasis are also raised. The legitimacy of so-called "stand your ground" policies and laws is also addressed. This volume will be of great interest to readers in moral, political, and legal philosophy.

Book Framing in Discourse

Download or read book Framing in Discourse written by Deborah Tannen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of framing has been pivotal in research on social interaction among anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, and linguists. This collection shows how the discourse analysis of frames can be applied to a range of social contexts. Tannen provides a seminal theoretical framework for conceptualizing the relationship between frames and schemas as well as a methodology for the discourse analysis of framing in interaction. Each chapter makes a unique theoretical contribution to frames theory while showing how discourse analysis can elucidate the linguistic means by which framing is accomplished in a particular interactional setting. Applied to such a wide range of contexts as a medical examination, psychotic discourse, gender differences in sermon performance, boys' "sportscasting" their own play, teasing among friends, a comparison of Japanese and American discussion groups, and sociolinguistic interviews, the discourse analysis of framing emerges here as a fruitful new avenue for interaction analysis.

Book Defending America

Download or read book Defending America written by Elizabeth Lutes Hillman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From going AWOL to collaborating with communists, assaulting fellow servicemen to marrying without permission, military crime during the Cold War offers a telling glimpse into a military undergoing a demographic and legal transformation. The post-World War II American military, newly permanent, populated by draftees as well as volunteers, and asked to fight communism around the world, was also the subject of a major criminal justice reform. By examining the Cold War court-martial, Defending America opens a new window on conflicts that divided America at the time, such as the competing demands of work and family and the tension between individual rights and social conformity. Using military justice records, Elizabeth Lutes Hillman demonstrates the criminal consequences of the military's violent mission, ideological goals, fear of homosexuality, and attitude toward racial, gender, and class difference. The records also show that only the most inept, unfortunate, and impolitic of misbehaving service members were likely to be prosecuted. Young, poor, low-ranking, and nonwhite servicemen bore a disproportionate burden in the military's enforcement of crime, and gay men and lesbians paid the price for the armed forces' official hostility toward homosexuality. While the U.S. military fought to defend the Constitution, the Cold War court-martial punished those who wavered from accepted political convictions, sexual behavior, and social conventions, threatening the very rights of due process and free expression the Constitution promised.

Book Backs Against the Wall

Download or read book Backs Against the Wall written by Kathy A McCloskey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Backs Against the Wall: Battered Women’s Resistance Strategies tackles several controversial aspects involved with intimate partner violence (IPV)—namely the approaches many victims use when resisting their oppressors. This sensitive and sensible feminist perspective concerning battered women's use of different resistance strategies, and the reasons why they use them, also focuses on ways to support victims through intervention and prevention strategies. Leading experts provide current research, revealing viewpoints, and convincing assertions about the victims of IPV. This book powerfully refutes the sweeping assertions made by today’s antifeminist-based mindset that women are as violent as men in cases of IPV perpetration. This insightful source provides strong evidence of the different resistance strategies that battered women use in response to multiple oppressions, including IPV, in the case against the gender parity argument—that may very well be politically motivated. The text provides extensive references and several figures and tables to clearly present data. This book is a valuable resource for activists, educators, students, health providers, justice system workers, advocates, and researchers. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment and Trauma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global community, dependent as always on the cooperation of nation states, is gradually learning to address the serious threats to the cultural heritage of our disparate but shared civilizations. The legacy of conquest, colonialization, and commerce looms large in defining and explaining these threats. The essays contained in this challenging volume are based on papers presented at an international conference on cultural heritage issues that took place at Willamette University. The conference sought to generate fresh ideas about these cultural heritage issues; offer a good sense of their nuances and complexities; and reveal how culture, law, and ethics can interact, complement, diverge, and contradict one another.
