Book Anarchy and Anarchists

Book excerpt: The author of this long and detailed account of the investigations into the Haymarket case was a member of the police force and a colleague of Inspector Bonfield, the police officer who led the police into the crowd at Haymarket on May 4, 1886. The book, which was widely distributed at the time, included many documents from the case, descriptions of testimony at trial, and many drawings of people and incidents. The author, Michael Schaack, and Inspector Bonfield were subsequently dismissed from the Chicago Police after an investigation for corruption. Subsequent investigations of the trial uncovered perjured testimony by police witnesses and others, and jury rigging by the prosecution.

Book Anarchy and Anarchists Communism Socialism and Nihilism in Doctrine and in Deed

Download or read book Anarchy and Anarchists Communism Socialism and Nihilism in Doctrine and in Deed written by Michael Schaack and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 1468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It will be found in the succeeding pages that neither animosity against the revolutionists, nor partiality to the State, has influenced the work. I have dealt with this episode in Chicago’s history as calmly and as fairly as I am able. I have tried to put myself in the position of the misguided men whose conspiracy led to the Haymarket explosion and to the gallows; to understand their motives; to appreciate their ideals—for so only could this volume be properly written. And to present a broader view, I have added a history of all forms of Socialism, Communism, Nihilism and Anarchy. In this, though necessarily brief, it has been the purpose to give all the important facts, and to set forth the theories of all those who, whether moderate or radical, whether sincerely laboring in the interests of humanity or boisterously striving for notoriety, have endeavored or pretended to improve upon the existing order of society. After the dynamite bomb exploded, carrying death into the ranks of men with whom I had been for years closely associated—after an impudent attack had been made upon our law and upon our system, which I was sworn to defend—it came to me as a duty to the State, a duty to my dead and wounded comrades, to bring the guilty men to justice; to expose the conspiracy to the world, and thus to assist in vindicating the law. How the duty was performed, this story tells. It is a plain narrative whose interest lies in the momentous character of the facts which it relates. Much of it is now for the first time given to the public. I have drawn upon the records of the case, made in court, but more especially upon the reports made to me, during the progress of the investigation, by the many detectives who were working under my direction. I can say for my book no more than this: that from the first page to the last there is no material statement which is not to my knowledge true. The reader, then, may at least depend upon the accuracy of the information presented here, even if I cannot make any other claim.

Book Legal Reasoning and Legal Writing

Download or read book Legal Reasoning and Legal Writing written by Richard K. Neumann and published by Aspen Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revision of Neumann's very successful basic legal writing text, this edition continues to give a strong foundation in legal analysis and to writing while refining and further improving the text based on user's responses. The text focuses on constructing a proof of a conclusion of law and teaches format, style, and grammar alongside the reasoning skills. (Chapter 9, How to Organize Proof of a Conclusion of Law, Is widely regarded as the best explanation of this topic in any legal writing text). The goal is to help students learn how to make writing decisions based on the need to prove analysis. Of special interest are chapters on client interviewing and client letters, sample client letters, An updated citation/quotation chapter to reflect changes in the 16th Edition of the Blue Book, sections that show students how to convert their raw materials into an organized first draft, and explanations on the process of writing - in detail and in many contexts. Combining clear, readable text with effective sample documents and exercises, Neumann has succeeded in creating a sophisticated, yet accessible, text carefully crafted for beginning legal writers. Book Prince s Dictionary of Legal Citations

Download or read book Prince s Dictionary of Legal Citations written by Julie Roberts Furgerson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assists the legal profession in citing legal authorities according to the rules given in "The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation", 21st ed. (2020). This title is a companion to The Bluebook (not a replacement) and applies Bluebook rules to a representative collection of common legal authorities. The citations included are based on Bluebook rules, and the abbreviations are those found in The Bluebook or derived from its guidelines. Besides updating both Bluebook and state court rule references, this edition has been updated to reflect Twenty-First Edition Bluebook revisions. The new edition has reduced its total page count--from 560 pages to 365 pages--in part by placing the citation information contained in T2 Foreign Jurisdictions in a free online database, and in part by having T6 abbreviations cover case names and institutional authors, as well as periodical titles. The various subsections of T13 from the twentieth edition are either contained in an expanded and slightly revised T6 or in the combined single T13 section "Institutional Names in Periodical Titles." Rule 18.8 was added to the twenty-first edition to provide citation guidance for photographs and illustrations.--Publisher.
