Pycnogonids and many groups of deep-sea crustaceans have been intensively studied, from the smallest animals, like the mostly unknown benthic copepods to the largest decapods. This book presents new and updated information on various groups of deep-sea pycnogonids and crustaceans occurring off the American continent. Offering a valuable reference resource for scientists interested in this fascinating fauna, it includes review papers and new data on the deep-sea communities occurring off the USA, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Argentina, as well as in larger areas in both the East Pacific and the West Atlantic. As such it covers most of the current deep-water research in Latin America.

What no one could foresee in the 1960s was that the focus of everyone's attentions would completely transform. Traditional pure anatomy would be augmented with more sophisticated developmental genetic work. Concurrent with that effort molecular sequencing would become a remarkably effective tool. Many of these species are already known, though not always well described, but the samples also contain many new species, especially of the family Arcturidae. The descriptions found in the literature are often poor or incomplete. It is difficult to determine many of the previously described species or to identify new species. For this reason, many species are redescribed besides the description of new species. Antarcturus Zur Strassen, 1902 does not form a monophyletic unit. Though a complete revision of the genera of the Arcturidae cannot be presented, it is possible to define some new, probably, monophyletic genera. Besides the contribution of descriptions of new species, redescriptions and the establishments of new genera this book will be a good stimulus for taxonomists and phylogeneticists to work out more monophyletic groups within the polyphyletic genus Antarcturus.
