Download or read book Deep Purple and Rainbow written by Steve PIlkington and published by Sonicbond Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few would deny that Deep Purple were one of the most influential and popular heavy rock bands to emerge from the melting pot of the late 1960s. They went through several line-up changes, and stylistic shifts, before splitting up for the first time in the mid 1970s. Talismanic guitarist Ritchie Blackmore carried the spirit on when he formed Rainbow after leaving Purple in 1975, particularly through his partnership with legendary singer Ronnie James Dio. Deep Purple reformed some years later, of course, but many consider this original, sometimes turbulent, decade to be their most significant. Steve Pilkington puts his focus on the period from Shades Of Deep Purple in 1968 through to the first dissolution of the band after Come Taste The Band in 1976, via such classics as Machine Head and In Rock. He also discusses first four Rainbow studio albums, including the classic Rainbow Rising and the hit-laden Down To Earth album in 1979, taking a look at every song from every album in detail. He also discusses live recordings plus DVD and video releases. The result is the most exhaustive guide to the band’s music yet produced, as critical opinion rubs shoulders with facts, trivia and anecdotes to provide a fascinating ‘alternative history’ of these revered bands. Whether you are a hardcore fan or simply want a guide through the world which lies beyond 'Smoke On The Water', this book is for you. The Author: Steve Pilkington is a music journalist, proof-reader and broadcaster. He is Editor in Chief for the Classic Rock Society magazine Rock Society, and contributes to other publications such as Prog. Before taking on this work full-time, he spent years writing for fanzines and an Internet music review site on a part-time basis. He has recently published “Black Sabbath – Song By Song” (Fonthill, 2018) book, and has written the official biography of legendary guitarist Gordon Giltrap. In addition, he presents a weekly progressive rock radio show titled ‘A Saucerful of Prog’ on Firebrand Radio. He lives in St.Helens, Merseyside.

Book The Road of Golden Dust

Download or read book The Road of Golden Dust written by Jerry Bloom and published by Wymer UK. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive story of Deep Purple's golden years 1968-76, which saw the band come from nowhere to have a top 4 US hit with its debut single. Within two years the band was in the throes of potentially dissolving when the record company went into liquidation. Fortunately, focussing on their homeland in Britain, in 1970 they re-launched their career with the groundbreaking In Rock LP - the platform that ensured by 1973 Deep Purple was the biggest selling album artists in America. Band break-ups and in-fighting continually rocked the boat before finally calling it a day in 1976 after a brief UK tour. The Road of Golden Dust documents the ups and downs, drawing on the author's interviews with various band and road crew members including founding members Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Nick Simper, as well as interviews with Roger Glover, Glenn Hughes, roadie Ian Hansford and tour manager Colin Hart. Co-operation from the management company Deep Purple (Overseas) Ltd, including access to previously unpublished interviews, all help to unveil new stories that help to explain the whys and wherefores that shaped one of the greatest and most influential rock bands of all time.

Book Deep Purple Fire in the Sky

Download or read book Deep Purple Fire in the Sky written by Simon Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' is such a ubiquitous rock anthem that it almost seems as if it's been out there forever. Yet the story of how this most famous of metal tracks came into being is shot-through with chance incidents, any one of which could have seen the recording stifled at birth, leaving music writers to scrabble about for another "best riff of all time" contender (and five hard-working musicians considerably less well-off.) Fire in the Sky looks in detail at this crucial period in Deep Purple's history and the making of their break-through album 'Machine Head'. The basic fact that a fire destroyed the Montreux Casino during a Frank Zappa concert is well known to most music fans, leaving Deep Purple to find somewhere else to record, but this book brings much new information to light. And although 'Smoke On The Water' was laid down while the Swiss Police hammered at the door of a roller skating rink, the band were then forced to move again, ending up at the Grand Hotel where they built a studio in the corridors using old mattresses and egg cartons for sound-proofing. In the chaos, 'Smoke on the Water' was almost forgotten. The band only roughed it out as something to play to their Montreux host, Jazz festival organiser Claude Nobs, who told them it was far too good to leave in the can. This book looks back at the events which led up to Deep Purple's bizarre and Heath Robinson-esque 'Machine Head' recording sessions in the winter of 1971. And as for that "hit to be"; 'Smoke On The Water' was not even tried out on stage, and might never have been played live at all were it not for a request from the BBC for a radio session. It went on to sell 12 million copies when issued as a single in 1973 and is probably the only record to ever generate a gold disc presented to a city. And yes, there really is a music shop in London which threatens to fine budding guitarists should they dare to try out the riff in-store. And in these times of economic hardship, isn't it inspiring to know that punitive tax rates back home were responsible for Deep Purple being in Montreux in the first place? The book moves on through 1972 and takes in the subsequent debilitating American tours where 'Machine Head' quickly became a massive selling album, even as the relentless gigging pulled Deep Purple apart. Memorabilia and many rare and unseen photographs illustrate the story, including remarkable images of the Casino fire and aftermath, and Ian Gillan with his notepad writing the lyrics to 'Smoke On The Water' in the studio. Members of the band have spoken, as well as associated crew and studio staff. The music and gigs are covered while appendices include tour dates and a discography, as well as a map showing the sites connected with the recordings. Several myths are also laid to rest: Many fans trekking to Montreux visit the wrong Grand Hotel altogether, while down the road the wealthy owners of luxury apartments sit blithely unaware of the musical history made in their living rooms. During research for this book the authors revisited the site of the recordings in Montreux with bass player Roger Glover to gain a unique insight into the album's history. As a result of this visit locals are preparing a heritage plaque to mark the site.

Book Tommy Bolin In and Out of Deep Purple

Download or read book Tommy Bolin In and Out of Deep Purple written by Tommy Bolin and published by Sonicbond Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It started off so well. As Jon Lord enthused in the October 1975 issue of Melody Maker: 'Tommy can't be so bad for us with so many good ideas. All I can say is when you hear the album (Come Taste The Band) you'll change your mind. Whether you like the music or not, you'll have to realise that Deep Purple now have an excitement in their playing that they haven't had in a long time...'. Despite calls of 'we want Blackmore' when Deep Purple Mark four played live, there was so much more to American guitarist Tommy Bolin than being Ritchie Blackmore's replacement. As a result, the purpose of this long-overdue biography is to readdress the existing narrative of Tommy Bolin's legacy. As well as discussing objectively Tommy's time with Deep Purple, Laura Shenton offers an insight into his musical achievements in his own right outside of the band, which include two cult rock albums in Teaser and Private Eyes. He also had a stint in The James Gang and make numerous guest appearances, where his versatile and virtuosic skills as a guitarist were utilised, before his untimely death in 1976 at the shockingly young age of 25.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slaves And Masters is arguably one of the most divisive albums in Deep Purple's history. A product of Ian Gillan's sacking from the band and the recruitment of former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, in 1990, Slaves And Masters divided the fanbase enormously. But with four fifths of the classic Mk2 lineup at the helm and a desire to recapture the live feeling in the studio that had been a hallmark of their seventies albums, was it really the worst Deep Purple album as some fans claim? In this book, author Laura Shenton MA LLCM DipRSL offers an in-depth perspective on Deep Purple's thirteenth studio album from a range of angles including how the album came to be, how it was presented and received at the time (live as well as on record), and what it means in terms of Deep Purple's legacy today.
