Book Availability of Coal Resources for Mining in Illinois

Download or read book Availability of Coal Resources for Mining in Illinois written by Colin G. Treworgy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Availability of Coal Resources for Mining in Illinois: Middletown Quadrangle, Central Illinois No surface minable resources are available and only 58% of the original deep minable resources (55% of the original total) are available for mining. If under ground mining is restricted to room and pillar tech niques (thus excluding longwall mining), unfavorable roof and floor conditions reduce the amount of avail able resources to a low 195 million tons - 51°/o of the total original resources. Technological factors, including bedrock and seam thicknesses as well as roof and floor conditions, ac count for 98% of the unavailable tonnage. Land use restrictions due to towns, interstate highways, mines, cemeteries, and other sociocultural features account for the remaining 2% of unavailable tonnage. These factors probably also restrict the mining of significant quanti ties of coal resources elsewhere in central Illinois. Consequently, the amount of coal available for development in the Middletown area may be consider ably lower than has been indicated by earlier studies. Book Coal Resources of District Vi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Coal Resources of District Vi Classic Reprint written by Gilbert Haven Cady and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal Resources of District Vi The coal resources of District VI are very great. The original tonnage of coal No. 6 alone is estimated to be tons. Of this only tens, or per cent, have been mined. The amount of coal represented by tons is equivalent to the total production of the United States to the end of 1910. This volume of coal would supply Illinois at the present rat production and with the present proportion of recovery for about years, and the entire United States between 5 and 10 years. N o careful estimate of the amount of coal in the coal beds other than No. 6 has been attempted, but inasmuch as the total tonnage per foot for the entire area is billion it is not improbable that there is nearly as much coal available in the other beds as was originally available in No. 6 seam. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal Mining in Illinois The annual coal production of the world is approximately tons, of which amount the United States pro duces about 40 per cent and the State of Illinois more than 4. Illinois is the third largest producer of coal in the United States, being exceeded in production only by Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and its annual tonnage is about 11 per cent of the output of the country. Employing men who mine annually 60 million tons of coal worth over 70 million dollars, the coal mining industry must be regarded as one of the most important industries in the State and its economic status is of vital interest. Book Problem Sites

Download or read book Problem Sites written by Jack R. Nawrot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problem Sites: Lands Affected by Underground Mining for Coal in Illinois Early coal mining in Illinois consisted of digging in outcrops along river bluffs or stripping shallow overburden from seams near the surface. Such techniques resulted in very little refuse (waste coal and other debris) at the surface, as most coal was selected by hand without further processing. Modern mining practices incorporating continuous mining machines, as well as the demand for clean, processed coal, has resulted in current refuse rates of 20 to 50 percent of the deep mined coal. In 1974, the nation's coal industry generated about 130 million tons of coal mine refuse (schlick and Wahler Refuse produced by underground mines in Illinois totaled an estimated 8 to 15 million tons in 1975, or approximately million cubic yards. Coal preparation plants produce two types of refuse material gob and slurry. Coarse refuse (plus 28 sieve or referred to as gob, contains waste coal, rock, pyrites, or other materials of relatively large size. The washing process produces effluent (minus 28 sieve), referred to as slurry, containing small coal particles, clay, and other debris (martin In the past, gob was deposited in refuse piles; slurry was pumped and deposited into streams, onto adjacent terrestrial areas, or into impoundments. Book Hydrogeologic Aspects of Coal Mining in Illinois

Download or read book Hydrogeologic Aspects of Coal Mining in Illinois written by Keros Cartwright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrogeologic Aspects of Coal Mining in Illinois: An Overview Progressive drainage and rewetting during mining may weaken the mine roof and floor materials, and repeated wetting and drying could further weaken the rocks. For example, in the city of Streator, Illinois, sewage has been dumped into the old mine workings for many years and allowed to move later ally through the workings, discharging to the Vermilion River. Current studies undertaken to control the sewage discharge suggest that repeated wetting and drying will significantly reduce the strength of the rocks and therefore increase the incidences of mine subsidence. Thus, any change in the hydrogeologic regime of a mine, such as backfilling a dry mine with water (man-induced or natural) or pumping water from a mine which has filled, may weaken the rocks and precipitate increased rates of subsidence and sur face damage. Severe inundation does not occur in most deep coal mines in Illinois, and the depletion and drainage of aquifers in mine dewatering operations is generally not a problem. In areas of Illinois in which the Pennsylvanian series is the uppermost bedrock unit, the ground water becomes mineralized at an average depth of less than 100 meters (about 300 ft). Most Illinois coal mines are in bedrock which contains mineralized water. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Thirty Seventh Annual Coal Report of Illinois 1918 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Seventh Annual Coal Report of Illinois, 1918 The Department of Mines and Minerals presents herewith the Thirty-seventh Annual Coal Report of Illinois. The report shows an increased production of tons over last year, and the number of mines increased from 810 to 967. There was also an increase of four days in working time and an increase of employees. Taking the shipping mines, which produced more than 98 per cent of the coal, as a basis, we find that the number of mines was increased from 324 to 370, the working time increased 15 days and the number of underground employees more than last year. These increases account wholly for the increased tonnage, as an analysis of the figures show that the average output per man per day is less than it was last year. Book Surface Subsidence in Illinois Resulting From Coal Mining Classic Reprint

Download or read book Surface Subsidence in Illinois Resulting From Coal Mining Classic Reprint written by Lewis Emanuel Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surface Subsidence in Illinois Resulting From Coal Mining It is undoubtedly to the interest of the State to conserve the coal supply by securing as complete extraction as possible from the areas in which mining is now being carried on. Almost one - half of the coal is being left in the ground and made unavailable for future mining, and in some places a large part of this abandoned coal is left because the mine operators fear that by removing a larger per centage they may cause surface subsidence and be required to pay damages out of proportion to the real value of the surface. In many places the surface may be restored at little expense. But until the prevailing conditions are known accurately and the essential facts are understood and studied, the State cannot consider or propose meas ures to relieve the mining industry of this severe burden. Book The Modification of Illinois Coal by Low Temperature Distillation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Modification of Illinois Coal by Low Temperature Distillation Classic Reprint written by S W Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modification of Illinois Coal by Low Temperature Distillation Concerning the waste of the fuel supply, there are broader reasons for economy than the mere selfish demands of the indi vidual or corporation interested. Notwithstanding the fact that the coal fields of the United States are extensive, the coal supply is not inexhaustible. Campbell1 states that at the present rate of increase, the available coal fields of this country will be used up in ninety years, but if the rate of consumption of 1905 remains constant the fields will last four thousand years. It is hardly possible that the great activity which has so characterized the past twenty-five years, in the building of railroads, steamship lines, and factories will be as marked in the future as it has been in the past. There will be, however, a constant increase in the con sumption of coal unless some new source of power is developed. It does not seem probable that the rate of increase will be materi ally affected for a great many years to come; hence, Campbell estimates that four hundred years will be nearer the truth than four thousand. The sources of loss are mainly two; one is found in wasteful methods used in the mining, and the other in the combustion of coal. Although it is not within the province of this work to dis cuss the present day methods of mining, it might be well to men tion the fact that from 40 to 60 per cent of the coal is left in the mine in the form of walls, pillars, roofs, dust, etc. In the matter of economic combustion, the advancement has been almost entire ly on the mechanical side as illustrated in the modern stokers, improved combustion chambers, the sizing and washing of coal, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
