Book Decisions of the Maryland Campaign

Download or read book Decisions of the Maryland Campaign written by Michael S Lang and published by Univ Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maryland Campaign represented Gen. Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North. Opposing Lee was Gen. George B. McClellan, who had just retreated from Lee's onslaught during the Seven Days Battles. While Lee and McClellan fought a preliminary battle at South Mountain, and a final engagement with Lee's rearguard at Shepherdstown as the Confederate Army withdrew across the Potomac, the full force of both armies would meet at Antietam, and the subsequent battle would prove to be the bloodiest single-day battle of the war. Decisions of the Maryland Campaign introduces readers to critical decisions made by Confederate and Union commanders throughout the campaign. Michael S. Lang examines the decisions that prefigured the action and shaped the contest as it unfolded. Rather than a linear history of the campaign, Lang's discussion of the critical decisions presents readers with a vivid blueprint of the campaign's developments. Exploring the critical decisions in this way allows the reader to progress from a sense of what happened in this campaign to why they happened as they did. Complete with maps and a guided tour, Decisions of the Maryland Campaign is an indispensable primer, and readers looking for a concise introduction to the campaign can tour this sacred ground--or read about it at their leisure--with key insights into the campaign and a deeper understanding of the Civil War itself. Decisions of the Maryland Campaign is Lang's second contribution and the thirteenth in a series of books that will explore the critical decisions of major campaigns and battles of the Civil War.

Book The Maryland Campaign of September 1862

Download or read book The Maryland Campaign of September 1862 written by Ezra A. Carman and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Shepherdstown and the End of the Campaign is the third and final volume of Ezra Carman’s magisterial The Maryland Campaign of September 1862. As bloody and horrific as the battle of Antietam was, historian Ezra Carman—who penned a 1,800-page manuscript on the Maryland campaign—did not believe it was the decisive battle of the campaign. Generals Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan intended to continue fighting after Sharpsburg, but the battle of Shepherdstown Ford (September 19 and 20) forced them to abandon their goals and end the campaign. Carman was one of the few who gave this smaller engagement its due importance, detailing the disaster that befell the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry and Maj. Gen. A. P. Hill’s success in repulsing the Union advance, and the often overlooked foray of Jeb Stuart’s cavalry to seize the Potomac River ford at Williamsport. Carman also added a statistical study of the casualties in the various battles of the entire Maryland Campaign, and covered Lincoln’s decision to relieve McClellan of command on November 7. He also explored the relations between President Lincoln and General McClellan before and after the Maryland Campaign, which he appended to his original manuscript. The “before” section, a thorough examination of the controversy about McClellan’s role in the aftermath of Second Manassas campaign, will surprise some and discomfort others, and includes an interesting narrative about McClellan’s reluctance to commit General Franklin’s corps to aid Maj. Gen. John Pope’s army at Manassas. Carman concludes with an executive summary of the entire campaign. Dr. Clemens concludes Carman’s invaluable narrative with a bibliographical dictionary (and genealogical goldmine) of the soldiers, politicians, and diplomats who had an impact on shaping Carman’s manuscript. While many names will be familiar to readers, others upon whom Carman relied for creating his campaign narrative are as obscure to us today as they were during the war. The Maryland Campaign of September 1862, Vol. III: The Battle of Shepherdstown and the End of the Campaign, concludes the most comprehensive and detailed account of the campaign ever produced. Jammed with firsthand accounts, personal anecdotes, detailed footnotes, maps, and photos, this long-awaited study will be appreciated as Civil War history at its finest.

Book Decisions of the Seven Days

Book excerpt: "From June 25 to July 1, 1862, Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia engaged Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac in a series of battles at the end of the Peninsula Campaign that would collectively become known as the Seven Days Battles. Beginning with the fighting at the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek, Lee consistently maneuvered against and attacked McClellan's Army of the Potomac as it retreated south across the Virginia Peninsula to the James River. At the conclusion of the Battle of Malvern Hill, Lee's second most costly battle, where McClellan's strong defensive position of infantry and artillery repelled multiple frontal assaults by Lee's troops, the Federal army slipped from Lee's grasp and brought the Seven Days to an end. The Seven Days was a clear Confederate victory that drove the Union army away from the capital at Richmond, began the ascendancy of Robert E. Lee, and commenced a change in the war in the Eastern Theater. It set the stage for the Second Manassas Campaign followed by the Maryland Campaign of 1862"--

Book excerpt: A richly detailed account of the hard-fought campaign that led to Antietam Creek and changed the course of the Civil War. In early September 1862 thousands of Union soldiers huddled within the defenses of Washington, disorganized and discouraged from their recent defeat at Second Manassas. Confederate General Robert E. Lee then led his tough and confident Army of Northern Virginia into Maryland in a bold gamble to force a showdown that could win Southern independence. The future of the Union hung in the balance. The campaign that followed lasted only two weeks, but it changed the course of the Civil War. D. Scott Hartwig delivers a riveting first installment of a two-volume study of the campaign and climactic battle. It takes the reader from the controversial return of George B. McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac through the Confederate invasion, the siege and capture of Harpers Ferry, the daylong Battle of South Mountain, and, ultimately, to the eve of the great and terrible Battle of Antietam.

Book Decisions of the Red River Campaign

Download or read book Decisions of the Red River Campaign written by Michael S Lang and published by Univ Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2025-01-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of the Red River Campaign, which occurred between March 10 and May 22, 1864, Federal victory in the American Civil War was nearly assured. This final Union offensive in the trans-Mississippi theater was launched to capture Shreveport, a strategic river port and Confederate military complex. The fall of Shreveport would split Confederate forces, allowing the Federals to encircle and destroy the Confederate Army in western Louisiana and southern Arkansas as well as open a gateway to an invasion of Texas. But the dense piney woods and swamps of Louisiana made for difficult maneuvering, and both sides made severe tactical mistakes, leading General William Tecumseh Sherman to declare the Red River Campaign "one damn blunder from beginning to end." Decisions of the Red River Campaign explores the critical decisions made by Confederate and Federal commanders during the campaign and how these decisions shaped its outcome. Rather than offering a history of the operation, Michael S. Lang hones in on a sequence of decisions made by commanders on both sides of the contest to provide a blueprint of the campaign at its tactical core. Identifying and exploring the critical decisions in this way allows students of Civil War battles and campaigns to progress from a knowledge of what happened to a mature grasp of why events happened. Complete with maps and a driving tour, Decisions of the Red River Campaign is an indispensable primer, and readers looking for a concise introduction to the campaign can tour this sacred ground--or read about it at their leisure--with key insights into the campaign and a deeper understanding of the Civil War itself. Decisions of the Red River Campaign is the twenty-second in a series of books that explores the critical decisions of major campaigns and battles of the Civil War.

Book The First Maryland Campaign

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Maryland Campaign: An Address by the Brig. Gen'l Bradley T. Johnson, Delivered February 22, 1886, at the Fourth Annual Reunion of the Association of the Maryland Line, at Oratorio Hall, Baltimore, MD Many descendants of leaders of the Revolution in the Northern States sympathized with the South - some of them actually bore arms for the Confederacy. In Maryland not a single historic family that I can recall but was represented in our army by almost all of its arms-bearing youth. Howard, Carroll, Tilghman, Goldsborough, Holliday, Johnson, Stone, Chase, Dent, Bowie, were all there in force. The Colonel, commanding the Maryland Line, in the Army of Northern Virginia, mustered to his flag twenty-nine kinsmen. The same faith in honor, the same devotion to liberty, that actu ated the sires under Smallwood at Long Island, under Williams at Eutaw, and under Howard at Cowpens, inspired their descendants in the Valley campaign, at First and Second Coal Harbor, and at Gettysburg. Therefore, proud of our efforts to maintain the principles for which our ancestors fought, after the war was over, we have formed this Association to perpetuate our comradeship, to assist our desti tute and to aid in transmitting the truth to history. Download or read book The Maryland Campaign of September 1862 written by Ezra Ayers Carman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed in the early 1900s, The Maryland Campaign of September 1862 is still the essential source for anyone seeking understanding of the bloodiest day in all of American history. As the U.S. War Department's official expert on the Battle of Antietam, Ezra Carman corresponded with and interviewed hundreds of other veterans from both sides of the conflict to produce a comprehensive history of the campaign that dashed the Confederacy's best hope for independence and ushered in the Emancipation Proclamation. Nearly a century after its completion, Carman's manuscript has finally made its way into print, in an edition painstakingly edited, annotated, and indexed by Joseph Pierro. The Maryland Campaign of September 1862 is a crucial document for anyone interested in delving below the surface of the military campaign that forever altered the course of American history.

Book excerpt: The discovery of Robert E. Lee’s Special Orders No. 191 outside of Frederick, Maryland, on September 13, 1862, is one of the most important and hotly disputed events of the American Civil War. For more than 150 years, historians have debated if George McClellan, commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, dawdled after receiving a copy of the orders before warily advancing to challenge Lee’s forces atop South Mountain. In The Tale Untwisted, authors Gene Thorp and Alexander Rossino document in exhaustive fashion how “Little Mac” in fact moved with uncharacteristic energy to counter the Confederate threat and take advantage of Lee’s divided forces, seizing the initiative and striking a blow in the process that wrecked Lee’s plans and sent his army reeling back toward Virginia. This study is a beautifully woven tour de force of primary research that may well be the final word on the debate over the fate and impact of the Lost Orders on the history of the 1862 Maryland Campaign.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maryland Campaign: 1862, an Address Delivered Before the Maryland Historical Society March 12th, 1883 In jaunting about the battle-fields and studying in a crude way the campaigns of our war we cannot help being convinced that the Art of War has not improved for centuries. In this regard it much resembles other arts. Where has been the improvement in the plastic art since Phidias? The broken-nosed Buonarroti, with all his genius, never turned from his deft hands a statue that could excel those fashioned by the mighty master who had passed away many centuries before him. Where has been the improvement in the Builder's Art since the old masters reared the Parthenon and the Coliseum? The Alhambra, St. Peters, and our Capitol are mere patch-work compared to them. Not that we wish to say there have not been minor improvements in War; in arms, projectiles, &c., but it cannot be denied that the principles remain as they were during the wonderful campaigns of Hannibal. When General Lee was discussing with General Longstreet the then contemplated offensive campaign that ended so disastrously for their cause at Gettysburg, Longstreet opposed it and advised that, instead of that movement. Bragg should be reinforced heavily, march north, defeat Rosecrans, continue, and by such means relieve Vicksburg. He argued that Grant would be thus compelled to raise the siege and hasten to Rosecrans's aid. When on of Hannibal's armies was besieged in Capua by three Roman armies he conceived the idea, being outside with another army to march on Rome and thus raise the siege. Book General Edward Porter Alexander at Antietam

Download or read book General Edward Porter Alexander at Antietam written by Edward Porter Alexander and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the narrative of the Civil War, Edward Porter Alexander has loomed larger in death than in life. Just 25 years old when the war broke out, Porter Alexander had already served as an engineer and officer in the U.S. Army, but the native Georgian resigned his commission in May 1861 and joined the Confederacy after his home state seceded. Porter Alexander would continue to serve under Longstreet's corps for most of the rest of the war, and he famously suggested to Lee at Appomattox that the Confederate army should disband and melt away instead of surrender. Porter Alexander would later regret the suggestion, and Lee scolded him for it anyway. Though he had served with distinction during the Civil War, it was Porter Alexander's memoirs that have kept his name alive today. While many prominent officers on both sides wrote memoirs, Porter Alexander's were among the most insightful and often considered by historians as the most evenhanded. With a sense of humor and a good narrative, Porter Alexander skillfully narrated the war, his service, and what he considered the successes and faults of others, including Lee, when he thought they had made good decisions or mistakes. As a result, historians continue to rely heavily on his memoirs as a source for Civil War history.
