Book Multi fishery Activity in Oregon Commercial Fishing Fleets

Download or read book Multi fishery Activity in Oregon Commercial Fishing Fleets written by Christopher Norton Carter and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing demand for limited quantities of fish has led to systematic planning for the conservation and management of U.S. fishery resources. There is a need for better understanding of the complex biological and social environment on which regulation for conservation, social, and economic purposes is imposed. The behavior of commercial fishermen, who in many instances use multi-purpose vessels to exploit multi-species fisheries, is difficult to assess and predict. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze selected aspects of Oregon commercial fishing fleets. The focus of this study is on the short-run decision-making behavior of Oregon trawl fishermen for the period 1974-1979. A general review of the activities of Oregon's multi-purpose fishing fleets is followed by an attempt to measure the responses of trawl vessel operators to varying economic and biological conditions. Several models of the short-run allocation of fishing time by a multi-purpose vessel operator are developed. The limited amount of economic literature on multi-purpose fleet behavior is briefly reviewed. An important feature not explicitly recognized in the theoretical models is that fishermen operate in an uncertain environment. Fishermen are hypothesized to react to expectations about economic returns in the fisheries which they can exploit. Simple Nerlovian agricultural supply response models were adapted for statistical analysis of the allocation of fishing time. Fishermen's short-run behavior was hypothesized to depend on expectations of current rather than normal returns to fishing time. Four versions of models which explain allocation of fishing time for a stable subfleet of trawl vessels were estimated using ordinary least squares regression. Monthly days of fishing by fishery were significantly explained by variables representing expected gross revenues per unit of effort, weather conditions and seasonal regulations. The analysis also indicates that fishermen are able to respond rapidly to perceived variations in gross returns. In the shrimp and crab fisheries, elasticities of days fished with respect to expected gross returns were estimated to be in the range of 0.45 to 0.40. Regulatory implications are that: (1) fisheries managers need to monitor the effects of regulation with little delay and (2) the use of taxes and subsidies to shift significant amounts of effort among fisheries is not likely to be successful. Additional research effort could profitably be spent to refine measurement of the explanatory variables, or to measure the response of individual fishermen to suitable explanatory variables.

Book Fish Markets and Fishermen

Download or read book Fish Markets and Fishermen written by Suzanne Iudicello and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant number of the world's ocean fisheries are depleted, and some have collapsed, from overfishing. Although many of the same fishermen who are causing these declines stand to suffer the most from them, they continue to overfish. Why is this happening? What can be done to solve the problem. The authors of Fish, Markets, and Fishermen argue that the reasons are primarily economic, and that overfishing is an inevitable consequence of the current sets of incentives facing ocean fishermen. This volume illuminates these incentives as they operate both in the aggregate and at the level of day-to-day decision-making by vessel skippers. The authors provide a primer on fish population biology and the economics of fisheries under various access regimes, and use that information in analyzing policies for managing fisheries. The book: provides a concise statistical overview of the world's fisheries documents the decline of fisheries worldwide gives the reader a clear understanding of the economics and population biology of fish examines the management issues associated with regulating fisheries offers case studies of fisheries under different management regimes examines and compares the consequences of various regimes and considers the implications for policy making The decline of the world's ocean fisheries is of enormous worldwide significance, from both economic and environmental perspectives. This book clearly explains for the nonspecialist the complicated problem of overfishing. It represents a basic resource for fishery managers and others-fishers, policymakers, conservationists, the fish consuming public, students, and researchers-concerned with the dynamics of fisheries and their sustenance.

Book Just a Fisherman s Wife

Download or read book Just a Fisherman s Wife written by Jane Dowling and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique exposé of women in family businesses in the Australian commercial fishing industry and explores their visibility, contributions, barriers and opportunities for participation, and knowledge. Recognising the need to move beyond an exploration of women’s ‘roles,’ this book applies a detailed, well articulated and sophisticated feminist post structural approach which explores women’s identity, power/knowledge and positioning in relation to the current industry climate, in the context of discourses of ‘crisis’ and ‘sustainability.’ This is particularly pertinent with climate change looming as the next industry ‘crisis.’ As such, this book has significant interdisciplinary appeal, and will benefit feminist, gender, natural resource management and fisheries scholars and policy makers. Ultimately, it is hoped that this book will have a substantial impact on industry women in both Australia and elsewhere, and reduce their marginalisation; increase awareness about their contributions; and result in greater opportunities to voice their unique knowledge on social issues with a view to enhancing industry sustainability.

Book Report of the Symposium on Fisheries and Society

Download or read book Report of the Symposium on Fisheries and Society written by and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium demonstrated that the value of the inland fisheries resources in member countries of EIFAC considerably exceeds previous estimates. Indications are that in coming years there will be an increased demand for inland fishery products including especially recreational use. Inland fisheries resources will not be able to sustain increased levels of production and alternative use without careful management.
