Book Freedom in Resistance and Creative Transformation

Download or read book Freedom in Resistance and Creative Transformation written by Michael St. A. Miller and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Freedom in Resistance and Creative Transformation, Michael Miller addresses the concept of freedom that is central to the grammar of Christian faith and important in a wide range of religious and nonreligious settings across the globe. He confronts the fact that despite the claimed importance of freedom there continues to be interpersonal, socio-political, and religious power hierarchies that keep some people dominant and others subjugated. The book suggests that often these hierarchies are informed by Christian teachings that deny freedom to human beings on the basis of their humanity per se. Having classified humanity as fallen, we are instructed that freedom is experienced by disparaging our humanity as we actually experience it, seeing ourselves as our own worst enemies and accepting bondage to God—the bondage reflected in the character of relations with those seen as God’s special representatives in the world. Miller presents a case against this understanding of the human situation, and in the process he critically engages the Old and New Testaments along with ideas of significant representatives of Christian orthodoxy. As an alternative he promotes freedom that is finite, realistically libertarian, and relational as most compatible with the character of human beings that are partially self-creating and self-determining. Contributing to this position is the view that an infinitely temporal God, by character and desire, participates in human life in a way that ensures the requisite space for authentic decision making, from which emerges genuinely novel possibilities for human life. This dynamic has implications for the continued development of the human species and the quality of life in the cosmos as a whole.

Book Adaptive Ethics for Digital Transformation

Download or read book Adaptive Ethics for Digital Transformation written by Mark Schwartz and published by IT Revolution. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital transformation doesn't just raise ethical issues, it—in itself—is an ethical shift. Business leaders today are struggling to manage conflicting imperatives, those of the emerging digital world and those of the bureaucratic world of the past. The act of digital transformation requires a deep change in the moral outlook and ethical assumptions of a business. But how do we get there? Enterprise strategist and author Mark Schwartz shows how we need to learn to think differently about relationships with customers and employees. That the ethics of digital transformation is a matter of cultivating and applying virtues rather than applying rules. Ethics is not just a matter of refraining from doing bad things. It's a matter of building the world we want, and it's the job of company executives. Featuring a chapter on bullshit, a handy chart of excuses for bad behavior, and Schwartz's typically paradoxical blend of deep insight and pasta jokes, this book guides business leaders as they struggle to adapt their bureaucratic framework of ethics to the emerging landscape of the digital world. By the end of the book, business leaders will rethink what it takes to be an ethical organization.

Book Suggestible You

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erik Vance

  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Suggestible You written by Erik Vance and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Geographic's riveting narrative explores the world of placebos, hypnosis, false memories, and neurology to reveal the groundbreaking science of our suggestible minds. Could the secrets to personal health lie within our own brains? Journalist Erik Vance explores the surprising ways our expectations and beliefs influence our bodily responses to pain, disease, and everyday events. Drawing on centuries of research and interviews with leading experts in the field, Vance takes us on a fascinating adventure from Harvard's research labs to a witch doctor's office in Catemaco, Mexico, to an alternative medicine school near Beijing (often called "China's Hogwarts"). Vance's firsthand dispatches will change the way you think--and feel. Expectations, beliefs, and self-deception can actively change our bodies and minds. Vance builds a case for our "internal pharmacy"--the very real chemical reactions our brains produce when we think we are experiencing pain or healing, actual or perceived. Supporting this idea is centuries of placebo research in a range of forms, from sugar pills to shock waves; studies of alternative medicine techniques heralded and condemned in different parts of the world (think crystals and chakras); and most recently, major advances in brain mapping technology. Thanks to this technology, we're learning how we might leverage our suggestibility (or lack thereof) for personalized medicine, and Vance brings us to the front lines of such study.

Download or read book The Art of Deception written by Kevin D. Mitnick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's most infamous hacker offers an insider's view of the low-tech threats to high-tech security Kevin Mitnick's exploits as a cyber-desperado and fugitive form one of the most exhaustive FBI manhunts in history and have spawned dozens of articles, books, films, and documentaries. Since his release from federal prison, in 1998, Mitnick has turned his life around and established himself as one of the most sought-after computer security experts worldwide. Now, in The Art of Deception, the world's most notorious hacker gives new meaning to the old adage, "It takes a thief to catch a thief." Focusing on the human factors involved with information security, Mitnick explains why all the firewalls and encryption protocols in the world will never be enough to stop a savvy grifter intent on rifling a corporate database or an irate employee determined to crash a system. With the help of many fascinating true stories of successful attacks on business and government, he illustrates just how susceptible even the most locked-down information systems are to a slick con artist impersonating an IRS agent. Narrating from the points of view of both the attacker and the victims, he explains why each attack was so successful and how it could have been prevented in an engaging and highly readable style reminiscent of a true-crime novel. And, perhaps most importantly, Mitnick offers advice for preventing these types of social engineering hacks through security protocols, training programs, and manuals that address the human element of security.

Book DETERMINED MEANS Going From Victim to Victor

Download or read book DETERMINED MEANS Going From Victim to Victor written by Carol Bright and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-27 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determined Means: Going from Victim to Victor speaks about demeaning and abusive behaviors in all environments and in all walks of life as it relates to all types of abuse. This book addresses the habits and mindsets of the victim, as well as the characteristics and habits of the abuser. In outlining the process of healing, the mindset and determination of the victim to survive and be successful through practicing safe measures and God’s Word are emphasized along with what “in our nature” causes us to sin. This book instructs us as individuals how to endure trauma and embrace healing and safety measures. As with any victim, they realize it becomes increasingly more difficult to trust others and hold on to sanity during times of great suffering, pain and abuse. We begin to doubt our self worth, allow others to dictate everything to us, value other peoples’ opinion over our own. These are just a few of the issues we wrestle with daily in the complexity of abuse. I struggled with all of these issues most of my life. One human being should never have control over another, especially in unhealthy ways. This book distinguishes the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, habits and boundaries and why we need to put them into place. These are the most significant barriers to healthy relationships and without them often give the perpetrator “mixed signals”. We can do all we can and still experience tragedy. As you read this book and learn the “Psychology” of our existence and creation, you will understand the need for this “real life safety net” pertinent to your life as a whole.

Book excerpt: "Courage on Bataan and Beyond" is a comprehensive story about Abel F. Ortega's life during the Bataan Death March and Japanese imprisonment written by his son. Abel will take the reader with him from his childhood days when he would sit in a rocking chair and dream about the Far East to defending the Bataan Peninsula in a last ditch effort to keep the Japanese from taking the Philippines. Abel narrates how his family's prayers and his faith in God helped him to survive the infamous Bataan Death March, three-and-a-half years as a POW and two Hell Ship Voyages. This book will evoke both laughter and tears as one follows Abel from captivity to liberation. In his three-and-a-half years as a POW, he endured near starvation, hard labor, torture and the indescribable and inhumane cruelty from his captors before being set free August 15th, 1945. There were very few POW's who survived the Japanese brutality of Bataan and their following captivity, and of these, not many are still with us. Today at 85, Abel feels his story needs to be told so that the brave soldiers of Bataan will not be forgotten once again.

Book excerpt: This book embarks on a voyage through the heart of daring leadership, a journey that redefines the essence of what it means to lead and inspire. It invites you to shed preconceived notions and to grasp that vulnerability is not a sign of frailty, but rather a wellspring of strength. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the audacity to act despite it, to envision and strive for audacious objectives, and to challenge the established norms. Empathy is the connective tissue that unites individuals, spawns collaboration, and ushers inclusivity. Daring leadership is a journey of action, not mere words. It beckons leaders to exemplify, to cultivate bold cultures, and to kindle the flames of inspiration in others. It is not a path strewn with a fixed set of traits but an invitation to embrace these fundamental qualities as the driving forces that shape leaders, organizations, and societies. As you embark on the chapters of this book, we implore you to shed the misconceptions and the fears that often cloak leadership. Banish the notion that vulnerability is anathema to strength, that courage is an extraordinary trait, and that empathy is a mere luxury. This expedition is a liberation from the shackles of isolation that sometimes envelop leadership, an invitation to bask in the radiance of authenticity, cultivate innovation, and forge profound bonds.
