Book Beta delayed Charged Particle Decays of Neutron deficient Nuclei 20Mg 23Si and 22Si

Download or read book Beta delayed Charged Particle Decays of Neutron deficient Nuclei 20Mg 23Si and 22Si written by Mathieu Babo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Si stripped detectors (DSSD) surrounded by 16 Ge detectors (SeGA) were used to study the beta-delayed decay of 20Mg, 23Si and 22Si near the proton drip-line. These nuclei were produced at NSCL (MSU, USA) using the A1900 and the RFFS separator. The decay scheme (beta-p) of 20Mg was built by measuring the protons emitted in coincidence with three gamma-ray transitions in the daughter 19Ne. The level scheme of 20Na from the present work is in good agreement with previous measurements. Half-life measurements performed with proton and gamma gates were not conclusive. In the same way, the decay scheme of 23Si was built by measuring protons in coincidence with the gamma-rays emitted by the three first states in 22Mg. Gamma-rays at 332 keV (21Na) were observed and confirms the beta-2p branch. A transition at 1633 keV (20Ne) could correspond to the expected beta-3p channel. The IAS measured at 11.7 (4) MeV, completed the multiplet (A=23, T=5/2). The IMME was applied, leading to a new mass measurement of 23Si, 23.27 (7) MeV. For 22Si, a gamma-ray transition at 596 keV (20Na) allowed the identification of the beta-2p branch. 25 new proton-unbound states were identified in 22Al, and the IAS was measured at 9.09 (8) MeV. Mass of 22Si (0+) was deduced from the ft value for the superallowed Fermi decay from the ground state to its IAS in 22Al. The S2p value at 900 (158) keV doesn't allow a 2-proton radioactivity, in contradiction with several theoretical predictions.

Book Particle Emission From Nuclei

Download or read book Particle Emission From Nuclei written by Dorin N. Poenaru and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has three volume. The first volume is mainly devoted to the macroscopic-microscopic theory in its traditional form and extended to very high mass and charge asymmetry. Applications of this theory to the emission of different kinds of charged particles from nuclei are presented in the second volume, where recent experimental achievements in alpha decay, proton, and heavy ion (14C, 24Ne, 28Mg, etc.) radioactivities are also discussed. Experiments on spontaneous fission, fission isomers, and more complex phenomena like particle-accompanied fission, delayed processes: p, a, 2p, t, n, 2n, 3n, and the new mechanism of cold fission (or fission with compact shapes) are described in detail in the third volume.

Book Nuclear Decay Studies Far from stability

Download or read book Nuclear Decay Studies Far from stability written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear decay studies far-from-stability are performed not merely to characterize new isotopes, but to establish an experimental footing for improving our theoretical understanding of nuclear structure and decay. Although progress has been made in explaining low-lying level structure for a broad range of nuclei, transition probabilities are not yet quantitatively understood. The ability to understand nuclei far-from-stability is important to astrophysics for extending r- and s-process calculations to unknown nuclei, and to nuclear engineering for decay-heat calculations. Finally, by studying nuclei far-from-stability, we probe extremes of both decay energy and proton-neutron ratios where unforeseen and important new nuclear properties may be exhibited. The decays of nearly 100 isotopes and isomers have been studied with the OASIS mass-separation facility on-line at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory SuperHILAC. These studies have concentrated on neutron-deficient nuclei with 55≤Z≤71 up to A=157 and neutron-rich nuclei with 166≤A≤174. The results of these experiments are combined in this paper with those from many other laboratories to provide insight into systematic trends of beta- and [gamma]-ray transition probabilities near N=82. It is hoped that the smooth systematic trends in these transition probabilities will provide clues towards interpreting the underlying nuclear structure. Nuclei near N=82 and Z=64 are expected to be spherical and should be described by simple Shell Model considerations. Away from the shell closures, deformation sets in which should exhibit itself in the transition probabilities. The Z=64 shell closure is expected to disappear near N=78. The qualitative nature of these phenomena will be discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extension of the experimentally known nuclidic mass surface to nuclei far from the region of beta-stability is of fundamental interest in providing a better determination of the input parameters for the various nuclear mass formulae, allowing a more accurate prediction of the ultimate limits of nuclear stability. In addition, a study of the shape of the mass surface in the vicinity of the doubly-closed nuclide 1°°Sn provides initial information on the behavior of the shell closure to be expected when Z = N = 50. Experiments measuring the decay energies of 1°3 1°5In by .beta.-endpoint measurements are described with special attention focused on the development of a plastic scintillator .beta.-telescope coupled to the on-line mass separator RAMA (Recoil Atom Mass Analyzer). An attempt to measure the .beta.-endpoint energy of 1°2In is also briefly described. The experimentally determined decay energies and derived masses for 1°3 1°5In are compared with the predictions of different mass models to identify which models are more successful in this region. Furthermore, the inclusion in these comparisons of the available data on the neutron-rich indium nuclei permits a systematic study of their ground state mass behavior as a function of the neutron number between the shell closures at N = 50 and N = 82. These analyses indicate that the binding energy of 1°3In is 1 MeV larger than predicted by the majority of the mass models. An examination of the Q/sub EC/ surface and the single- and two-neutron separation energies in the vicinity of 1°3 1°5In is also performed to investigate further the deviation and other possible systematic variations in the mass surface in a model-independent way.

Book Laser Assisted Nuclear Decay Spectroscopy

Download or read book Laser Assisted Nuclear Decay Spectroscopy written by Kara Marie Lynch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work details an application of collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy for the separation of short-lived isomeric states and their subsequent study with decay spectroscopy. It reports the successful construction of a novel decay spectroscopy apparatus that can operate at pressures below 1 x 10^-9 mbar. The method is demonstrated by separating the nuclear ground and isomeric states of 204Fr and performing alpha-decay spectroscopy. An equivalent mass spectrometer would require 4.6 million times as much resolution to achieve the same result. This work unambiguously confirms the existence of a second isomeric state in 204Fr. The author also demonstrates the effectiveness of this method for laser spectroscopy and identification of hyperfine-structure components with energy tagging. This method was successfully used in 202Fr to identify ground and isomeric states. The measurement of 202Fr reported in this thesis demonstrates a factor of 100 improvement in sensitivity compared to state-of-the-art fluorescence techniques. The work reported in this thesis won the author the IOP Nuclear Physics Group Early Career Prize.
