Book excerpt: Anna Pavlova's revolutionary debut in 1910 at the Metropolitan Opera House captivated the nation and introduced Americans to the charms of modern ballet. Willa Cather was among the first intellectuals to recognize that dance had suddenly been elevated into a new art form, and she quickly trained herself to become one of the leading balletomanes of her era. Willa Cather and the Dance: "A Most Satisfying Elegance" traces the writer's dance education, starting with the ten-page explication she wrote in 1913 for McClure's magazine called "Training for the Ballet." Cather's interest was sustained through her entire canon as she utilized characters, scenes, and images from almost all of the important dance productions that played in New York.

"I bought this after reading the author's piece on Lake Como on the GoNomad site. I wasn't disappointed - there's masses of extra information here that many other guidebooks just don't have, and all of the lakes are covered, plus day trips to nearby towns, etc. Good variety of hotel and restaurants - not just for those with big budgets. I particularly like the listing and addresses for the ''adventures'' - which include anything from diving schools, bike and boat hire to art courses. The book doesn't seem quite as glossy as some other titles but the content is great - and clearly written by somebody who knows the region well. Maps are good too - including Milan metro map!" -- Amazon reviewer

Book The Death Penalty s Denial of Fundamental Human Rights

Download or read book The Death Penalty s Denial of Fundamental Human Rights written by John Bessler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Death Penalty's Denial of Fundamental Human Rights details how capital punishment violates universal human rights-to life; to be free from torture and other forms of cruelty; to be treated in a non-arbitrary, non-discriminatory manner; and to dignity. In tracing the evolution of the world's understanding of torture, which now absolutely prohibits physical and psychological torture, the book argues that an immutable characteristic of capital punishment-already outlawed in many countries and American states-is that it makes use of death threats. Mock executions and other credible death threats, in fact, have long been treated as torturous acts. When crime victims are threatened with death and are helpless to prevent their deaths, for example, courts routinely find such threats inflict psychological torture. With simulated executions and non-lethal corporal punishments already prohibited as torturous acts, death sentences and real executions, the book contends, must be classified as torturous acts, too.

Book excerpt: A dramatic countdown of the final months of World War II in Europe, The Last 100 Days brings to life the waning power and the ultimate submission of the Third Reich. To reconstruct the tumultuous hundred days between Yalta and the fall of Berlin, John Toland traveled more than 100,000 miles in twenty-one countries and interviewed more than six hundred people—from Hitler’s personal chauffeur to Generals von Manteuffel, Wenck, and Heinrici; from underground leaders to diplomats; from top Allied field commanders to brave young GIs. Toland adeptly weaves together these interviews using research from thousands of primary sources. When it was first published, The Last 100 Days made history, revealing after-action reports, staff journals, and top-secret messages and personal documents previously unavailable to historians. Since that time, it has come to be regarded as one of the greatest historical narratives of the twentieth century.

Book Smoky Goes to Europe

Download or read book Smoky Goes to Europe written by Kevin Amsler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-11-13 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smoky Goes to Europe: A Travel Tale of a Marriage is the humorous story of a pet black bear who accompanies his human parents on a 17-day trip to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. Besides staying with family living in Bavaria; the author and his wife take Smoky to explore medieval towns along Germany's Romantic Road; stroll Mozart's Salzburg; hike the Swiss Alps, discover a fairytale castle in Bavaria; renew wedding vows in a historic Italian church; and walk enough hills, steps, and streets to make the reader collapse from exhaustion. This story weaves through the history of European countries, provinces, cities, and towns, while embracing the cultures, languages, and incredible scenery of Europe in the spring. Amid the travel tales is the story of the close-knit relationship of a couple who married for the first time later in life and have not spent a single day of that marriage apart. Testimonials from notables profiled in the book "While touring Europe with the Rolling Stones, I made the acquaintance of Herr Amsler and found him to be a greatly troubled man, undoubtedly a result of the same medications I've been consuming. The book? I've never heard of it."-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. "An artistic nightmare!"-Pablo Picasso "Deeply disturbing! That's all I have time to say. The partisans are coming."-Benito Mussolini. "One of my aides brought this book to my attention and to the author I say this: If I ever catch you anywhere near one of my castles again, I'll have your fingers cut off with a very dull sword and mount your head above my throne."-Your humble servant, King Ludwig II. "Delightfully appalling!"-Napoleon Bonaparte
