Book Dearest Darling Letters from World War II

Download or read book Dearest Darling Letters from World War II written by Catherine Emerson Porto and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dearest Darling tells the true story of the WWII romance and marriage of Anthony (Tony) Porto of New York, a Navy aerial photographer aboard the USS Saginaw Bay, and Bernice Hardey of Texas. From a box of letters stored for decades, their daughter-in-law recounts their inspiring life together. Key to the story are Bernice's late-in-life recollections of the letters Tony wrote to her while he was aboard ship in the Pacific during the final battles of WWII. The letters were a lifeline, as Bernice listened to news feeds from Tokyo Rose about supposed Japanese triumphs and worried about Tony's safety amidst the heavy fighting. When Tony died in 2011, Bernice disclosed to the family their lifelong secret, recalling how happy she was the day she finally received the long-awaited letter from Tony disclosing in code that he was finally coming home. Code? What code was she talking about? The code, which neither Tony nor Bernice had ever mentioned before, was his way of letting her know his ever-changing location in the Pacific without arousing suspicion from the Navy censor, who read all outgoing mail. Unraveling the code and reading Tony's elegant letters brings to life Bernice and Tony's deepening love amidst the backdrop of war. The letters chronicle his journey from aerial-photography training to pre-invasion surveillance to photographing the invasion of Iwo Jima. Dearest Darling is more than a classic WWII love story. Bernice's and Tony's postwar lives are inspiring examples of devotion to something bigger than oneself: in their case, faith, family, community, country, and--above all--each other.

Book Dearest Ruthy

Download or read book Dearest Ruthy written by Joseph Portnoy and published by . This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the ear-numbing thunder of artillery is suddenly silenced; the acrid smell of gunpowder blown away; the threat of death lessened; the wounded treated; and the dead removed; the weary soldier finds a safe shelter, lights a cigarette, and wants to talk. He does so by writing a letter to the one he loves most, sharing his fears and loneliness. But mostly, he tells of his love. Dearest Ruthy is a moving collection of love letters from author Joseph Portnoy to his wife, Ruth, during World War II. From his Atlantic crossing aboard the HMS Aquitania, to his months in England preparing for the invasion of France, to his eleven months of combat in Europe, Portnoy and Ruth faithfully wrote letters full of love, hope, and dreams. Other than a diary or a journal, the letter sent to a loved one from the battlefield revealed the most intimate thoughts and sentiments of the young soldier, the hidden truths of war which often escaped the censor's pen. Dearest Ruthy beautifully captures those emotions of a generation that Tom Brokaw appropriately called "The Greatest."

I shall think of you until I post this, and until you get it. Can you feel, as you read these words, that I am thinking of you now; aglow, alive, alert at the thought that you are in the same world, and by some strange chance loving me. In September 1943, Chris Barker was serving as a signalman in North Africa when he decided to brighten the long days of war by writing to old friends. One of these was Bessie Moore, a former work colleague. The unexpected warmth of Bessie's reply changed their lives forever. Crossing continents and years, their funny, affectionate and intensely personal letters are a remarkable portrait of a love played out against the backdrop of the Second World War. Book World War Ii Letters Home

Download or read book World War Ii Letters Home written by Audrey Fahlberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, as letters arrived from my husband, a frontline combat medic in Italy with the Tenth Mountain Division, I was given assurance he was alive. I had to believe, though letters often arrived two months after they were written. That letter home was the only communication available in 1944 and 1945 from the Italian front, and all letters and cards were censored. Newspapers, radios, and newsreels at the movies told the world of the mountain peaks captured, rivers crossed, heroic details, lives lost. That letter home held our hearts together during the war. Letters were often written on the surface of his helmet, on a rock, or a board, and on any writing paper that was available. The letters home have been lovingly transcribed for easier reading because I wish to share them.

Download or read book Dearest Lenny written by Mari Yoshihara and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about Leonard Bernstein, a musician of extraordinary talent who was legendary for his passionate love of life and many relationships. In this work, Mari Yoshihara reveals the deeply emotional connections Bernstein formed with two little-known Japanese individuals, which she narrates through their personal letters that have never been seen before. Dearest Lenny interweaves an intimate story of love and art with a history of Bernstein's transformation from an American icon to a world maestro during the second half of the twentieth century. The articulate, moving letters of Kazuko Amano--a woman who began writing fan letters to Bernstein in 1947 and became a close family friend--and Kunihiko Hashimoto--a young man who fell in love with the maestro in 1979 and later became his business representative--convey the meaning Bernstein and his music had at various stages of their lives. The letters also shed light on how Bernstein's compositions, recordings, and performances touched his audiences around the world. The book further traces the making of a global Bernstein amidst the shifting landscape of classical music that made this American celebrity turn increasingly to Europe and Japan. The dramatic change in Japan's place in the world and its relationship to the United States during the postwar decades shaped Bernstein's connection to the country. Ultimately, Dearest Lenny is a story of relationships--between the two individuals and Bernstein, the United States and the world, art and commerce, artists and the state, private and public, conventions and transgressions, dreams and realities--that were at the core of Bernstein's greatest achievements and challenges and that made him truly a maestro of the world. Dearest Lenny paints a poignant portrait of individuals connected across cultures, languages, age, and status through correspondence and music--and the world that shaped their relationships.

Book From Burma with Love

Download or read book From Burma with Love written by Stephen W. Reiss and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irv and Mary Reiss (aka Dad and Mom) wrote this book as two letters per day for fifteen months from late 1943 through March 1945. Friends and relatives added more letters to bring the total to nearly 1,000. Virtually all of their letters ended with "I love you very very much" and "I miss you very very much." It's easy to empathize with their frustrations and anxieties about being separated and worried, especially with the birth and nurturing of their first child Stephen (aka me) in June 1944. This book title of From Burma With Love is an understatement. Irv Reiss served in the US Army from June 27, 1941 until September 17, 1945 for a total of 4 years, 2 months, and 20 days. Foreign service in India and Burma (Myanmar) was 1 year, 1 month, and 23 days. The foreign service in Burma was very intense and is the heart of this book -- hence the name, From Burma With Love. Irv was a labor officer along the Ledo Road from August 28, 1944 until December 11, 1944. His job was to hire and feed and pay several thousand native laborers (and a few elephants) to help build that road from Ledo, India to Mongyu, Burma. Read his letter of October 7, 1944.

Book We Are Going to Be Lucky

Download or read book We Are Going to Be Lucky written by Elizabeth L. Fox and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tells the story of a young couple in love during World War II, and the difficulties they faced both at war and on the home front. We Are Going to Be Lucky tells the story of a first-generation Jewish American couple separated by war, captured in their own words. Lenny and Diana Miller were married just one year before America entered World War II. Deeply committed to social justice and bonded by love, both vowed to write to one another daily after Lenny enlisted in 1943. As Lenny made his way through basic training in Mississippi to the beaches of Normandy and eventually to the Battle of the Bulge, Diana struggled financially, giving up her job as a machinist to become a mother. Their contributions to the war effort—Lenny’s crucial missions as an Army scout and Diana’s work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard—are the backdrop to their daily correspondence, including insightful discussions of democracy, politics, and economic hardship. Faced with grueling conditions overseas, Lenny managed to preserve every letter his wife sent, mailing them back to her for safekeeping. The couple’s extraordinary letters, preserved in their entirety, reveal and reflect the excruciating personal sacrifices endured by both soldiers at war and their young families back home. After decades of gathering dust, their words have been carefully transcribed and thoughtfully edited and annotated by Elizabeth L. Fox, Lenny and Diana’s daughter. “This beautiful book reveals both the quotidian lives on the military and home front as well as big political issues of the day like the death of Mussolini and the fight against fascism. Throughout it all, the reader gets glimpses of American society through a first-generation Jewish American perspective as they comment on the mundane details of daily finances as well as looming issues like racial politics in the wartime United States. The result is a pure joy and a window into a lost world.” —David Shneer, author of Through Soviet Jewish Eyes: Photography, War, and the Holocaust “At the heart of this fascinating and educational tale about a soldier and his wife during wartime is a wonderful love story. Lenny and Diana become relatable almost immediately. Their excitement at their experiences—the eagerness with which they anticipate their few reunions, the battles he is in, the pregnancy and birth of their daughter—draws readers in and allows them to live through the era as ordinary people experienced it day in and day out.” — Richard Aquila, author of Home Front Soldier: The Story of a GI and His Italian American Family During World War II “This is a truly remarkable story, contextualized just enough by the editor to provide the reader with a sufficient understanding of the history of the times without taking away the daily realities of a young couple making their way through letters and the occasional souvenir, till their final reunion. It pulls you in in such a way that you will not want to put the book down until the finish.” — Melissa Suzanne Fisher, author of Wall Street Women “The correspondence of Lenny and Diana is a compelling account of the war though the eyes of an American soldier in Europe and his wife who stayed in the United States. The drama centers on the birth of their first child in America and Lenny’s increasingly dangerous war. Lenny was to go on to become an eminent scholar of John Milton, and these letters show the young scholar at work, struggling to obtain research materials while recovering from serious injuries sustained at the Battle of the Bulge.” — Gordon Campbell, University of Leicester “Is there any genre of writing more immediate and soul-bearing than the love letter? In We Are Going to Be Lucky, Elizabeth L. Fox allows us inside the lives of one New York couple as they endure the challenges of living apart through World War II—Lenny from the battlefront and Diana at home in Brooklyn. From arduous training to the difficulties of factory work, from the hopefulness of pregnancy to a near-fatal injury and painful convalescence, this carefully edited collection of correspondence reveals the pain, sacrifice, and everyday struggles—and magnanimity—of the Greatest Generation, and the universal beauty of human connection.” — Julie Scelfo, author of The Women Who Made New York

Book excerpt: From a mesmerizing storyteller, the gripping search for a missing World War II crew, their bomber plane, and their legacy. In the fall of 1944, a massive American bomber carrying eleven men vanished over the Pacific islands of Palau, leaving a trail of mysteries. According to mission reports from the Army Air Forces, the plane crashed in shallow water—but when investigators went to find it, the wreckage wasn’t there. Witnesses saw the crew parachute to safety, yet the airmen were never seen again. Some of their relatives whispered that they had returned to the United States in secret and lived in hiding. But they never explained why. For sixty years, the U.S. government, the children of the missing airmen, and a maverick team of scientists and scuba divers searched the islands for clues. With every clue they found, the mystery only deepened. Now, in a spellbinding narrative, Wil S. Hylton weaves together the true story of the missing men, their final mission, the families they left behind, and the real reason their disappearance remained shrouded in secrecy for so long. This is a story of love, loss, sacrifice, and faith—of the undying hope among the families of the missing, and the relentless determination of scientists, explorers, archaeologists, and deep-sea divers to solve one of the enduring mysteries of World War II.
