Planet Earth, a small planet on the edge of a galaxy, is doing well. What one cannot say about one's thinking corporeal living beings of the higher spiritual order, i.e. humans. Book excerpt: In 1911, 22 year old Hettie Belle Matthew takes a daring leap into the unknown as she sails away from her cosmopolitan life in the bustling Bay Area for the remote Hawaiian Islands to work as a Governess for the prominent and wealthy Robinson Family. Letters discovered by her granddaughter over a century later are painstakingly woven together to bring this true story to life with rare insight and authenticity. “Hettie Belle's descriptive letters from over one hundred years ago make me feel as if I know my grandparents well. Her experiences bring the family to life, and I am not able to put the book down!”-- LOIS ROBINSON SOMERS, Descendant “Hettie Belle's charming letters open a fascinating window into the world of Kaua`i and Ni`ihau over 100 years ago. Through her eyes we are introduced to the lives of the plantation elite who ran Kaua`i society and to the magnificent landscapes that surrounded them. Hettie writes with aloha for both land and people, and Judith Burtner provides the necessary context so that we can get the most out of Hetties letters.”--ANDY BUSHNELL, Emeritus Professor of History, Kaua`i Community College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first step of understanding who we will become, comes at the death of who we were... ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Stories of spiritual journeys rarely have the punch of hard-nosed realness that Jesston Williams brings to, In The Eye of the Father." Alex Tsakiris, Host of the popular Skeptiko Podcast, and the author of Why Evil Matters and Why Science is Wrong…About Almost Everything ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This heartfelt memoir discusses how Jesston Williams became “a man of faith.” The faith discussed is the faith to persevere, faith in humanity, and above all, faith in his understanding of becoming the embodiment of destiny. Against a backdrop of trials and tribulations, near-death experiences, and rebirth, Jesston offers a gripping commentary of how the pressures of the unrelenting struggle to achieve his dreams against all odds fostered the compassionate capacity for inner growth and spiritual understanding. This is a powerful journey into the untamed heart of modern society, embracing the lofty hope of the possibility of ascendance beyond self-limitation to lead towards a sincere grace. This book is insightful and inspirational, passionate and poetic. This riveting account of a young man coming of age explores the human condition to unabashedly answer the question of what drives us to reach beyond ourselves in the face of adversity. This is a personal story, but one which at its core earnestly appeals to our shared humanity.

Download or read book The Ladies Repository written by and published by . This book was released on 1855 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
