Download or read book Dear Adversity written by Brenda Miller Emmons and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Adversity, I write to you not to introduce myself, for you know me very well. You have shown up at my home uninvited and unwelcome...You have tunneled through my emotions, leaving them raw and dissected...leaving me feeling like a victim of circumstance. I write to you today to proclaim freedom! I no longer see you as an adversary, but rather as a means to obtain the prize... Has adversity caught you off guard, leaving you reeling in its wake of destruction? Do you find yourself overwhelmed by troubles—desperate for direction, answers, and most of all, peace? In Dear Adversity: Choosing Hope in Christ over Despair, author Brenda Miller Emmons explores her own experience with adversity, showing how to accept and even embrace life's challenges by pursuing an intimate relationship with Christ. As a Christian, you are not promised an escape from adversity; in fact, quite the opposite: it's not a question of if adversity will come, but when. Through her story, Emmons illustrates how to surrender each situation in your life, clinging to God's eternal promises in His Word rather than your own understanding. This knowledge will take you beyond temporary fixes, beyond fear and impatience, discovering His faithfulness to guide you through each trial into complete victory in Him.

Download or read book Exploring the Psychological Benefits of Hardship written by Eranda Jayawickreme and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-22 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can adversity lead to enduring positive change across the lifespan? Providing a thoughtful and considered exploration of this question, this book presents a critical reassessment of posttraumatic growth, based on correcting prior theoretical and methodological limitations in the current research. Its core argument is that posttraumatic growth should be reconceptualized as positive personality change, and thus should be studied using novel methodological approaches from the field of personality psychology. Broadly, this argument is put forward in five progressive sections. Beginning by giving a conceptual and interdisciplinary overview of posttraumatic growth as a phenomenon, the volume then reviews the current academic conceptualization of posttraumatic growth and makes a case for a ‘reset’ in the research. The next section maintains that posttraumatic growth is in fact a form of positive personality change and should be analyzed using personality science methodology. Using positive personality change as a theoretical foundation for posttraumatic growth, the following two sections look at posttraumatic growth in context. It is explored both in the long term, such as in the development of reflective knowledge and wisdom, and in specific situations such as with refugees in Sri Lanka and survivors of the Rwandan genocide. Lastly, Exploring the Psychological Benefits of Hardship: A Critical Reassessment of Posttraumatic Growth concludes by offering recommendations for scholars and researchers that will improve the quality of research on posttraumatic growth, and will advance this important and worthy field.
Download or read book Clarissa or the History of A Young Lady written by Samuel Richardson and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 2227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressured by her unscrupulous family to marry a wealthy man she detests, the young Clarissa Harlowe is tricked into fleeing with the witty and debonair Robert Lovelace and places herself under his protection. Lovelace, however, proves himself to be an untrustworthy rake whose vague promises of marriage are accompanied by unwelcome and increasingly brutal sexual advances. And yet, Clarissa finds his charm alluring, her scrupulous sense of virtue tinged with unconfessed desire. Told through a complex series of interweaving letters, Clarissa is a richly ambiguous study of a fatally attracted couple and a work of astonishing power and immediacy. A huge success when it first appeared in 1747, and translated into French and German, it remains one of the greatest of all European novels.

The hymn of “Peace upon earth, good-will towards men,” had been chanted by thousands of voices throughout the land, from the grand cathedral-choir to the simple singers of the village church. Charity had extended her munificent hand to the poor and needy, lighting up smiles on many a care-worn face. Hospitality welcomed the good, the beautiful, and the great to the lordly mansions of the rich. Love and Peace sat enthroned in many a happy home. Poverty, shivering at the present, was consoled by the glowing figure of Hope, pointing with radiant eyes to the future. Memory and Sorrow lingered around the grave of many a departed one; but of all mourners they were the saddest who were estranged from those they still loved. Yes, amid the pain, the sorrow, the suffering of life, their hearts were the heaviest; for (to use the oft-quoted words of the poet) “to be wroth with those we love, doth work like madness in the brain;” and this hallowed season speaks strongest to our kindest feelings, and to the tenderness of our better nature....

Download or read book The Frankenstein Notebooks written by Charles Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-24 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is arguably the best known work of the English Romantic period. First published in 1996, this edition of The Frankenstein Notebooks contains not only facsimiles and transcriptions of all of surviving manuscripts related to the novel and a corrected, critical text of Frankenstein (or The Modern Prometheus) but also a full range of factual information, drawn from Shelley’s and William Godwin’s letters and journals, from newspaper ads of the day, and from other available scholarship about the conception, gestation, and birth of Mary Shelley’s monster. This two volume set contains a wealth of information vital to the creation and reception of Frankenstein. It will enable scholars, critics and students to see for themselves the exact extent of P. B. Shelley’s editorial contributions and trace the artistic and ideological development of the novel at various stages in its formation. It will also enable the reader to explore the text itself to test and evaluate their own theses. Part two contains the draft notebook B, which was written between December 1816 and April 1817, and the fair-copy notebooks which were compiled between April and May 1817. This set will be of keen interest to those studying Frankenstein, the Romantics and 19th century literature.
