Book excerpt: IT'S BOILING IN THE TOWNSHIPS OF THE MOTHER CITY The heat is oppressive in Cape Town and the drinking water is running out. A series of brutal murders shake the Cape of Good Hope. The tension boils over when the body of a young tourist is found in the middle of the idyllic national park. Captain Pieter Strauss of the "De Valke" special unit must catch the murderer before there can be another victim. Are these gruesome crimes connected to the ancient superstition of the Rain Queen, who demands victims in times of drought? Or is there something else behind it? Pieter and his old friend Nick Aquilina quickly get caught up in a vortex that pulls them deep into the merciless world of the townships and entangles them in the machinations of unscrupulous, large corporations. A fierce battle breaks out over the urgent need for drinking water, and all the while the murderer hunts for his next victim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the Cape Town underworld laid bare, explored through the characters who control the "protection" industry – the bouncers and security at nightclubs and strip clubs. At the centre of this turf war is Nafiz Modack, the latest kingpin to have seized control of the industry, a man often in court on various charges, including extortion. Investigative journalist Caryn Dolley has followed Modack and his predecessors for six years as power has shifted in the nightclub security industry, and she focuses on how closely connected the criminal underworld is with the police services. In this suspenseful page-turner of an investigation, she writes about the overlapping of the state with the underworld, the underworld with the 'upperworld', and how the associated violence is not confined to specific areas of Cape Town, but is happening inside hospitals, airports, clubs and restaurants and putting residents at risk. A book that lays bare the myth that violence and gangsterism in Cape Town is confined to the ganglands of the Cape Flats – wherever you find yourself, you're only a hair's breadth away from the enforcers.

Book excerpt: Join the search for Typhoid Mary in this early twentieth-century CSI. Now in paperback! Prudence Galewski doesn’t belong in Mrs. Browning’s esteemed School for Girls. She doesn’t want an “appropriate” job that makes use of refinement and charm. Instead, she is fascinated by how the human body works—and why it fails. Prudence is lucky to land a position in a laboratory, where she is swept into an investigation of a mysterious fever. From ritzy mansions to shady bars and rundown tenements, Prudence explores every potential cause of the disease to no avail—until the volatile Mary Mallon emerges. Dubbed “Typhoid Mary” by the press, Mary is an Irish immigrant who has worked as a cook in every home the fever has ravaged. But she’s never been sick a day in her life. Is the accusation against her an act of discrimination? Or is she the first clue in solving one of the greatest medical mysteries of the twentieth century?

His work moves from Ben Franklin Bon Mot to lengthy Whitmanesque verbal tourism. And then in Part II on to social policy and social change. Book Literature and the Idea of Luxury in Early Modern England

Download or read book Literature and the Idea of Luxury in Early Modern England written by Alison V. Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the idea of luxury in relation to a series of neighboring but distinct concepts including avarice, excess, licentiousness, indulgence, vitality, abundance, and waste, this study combines intellectual and cultural historical methods to trace discontinuities in luxury’s conceptual development in seventeenth-century England. The central argument is that, as ’luxury’ was gradually Englished in seventeenth-century culture, it developed political and aesthetic meanings that connect with eighteenth-century debates even as they oppose their so-called demoralizing thrust. Alison Scott closely examines the meanings of luxury in early modern English culture through literary and rhetorical uses of the idea. She argues that, while ’luxury’ could and often did denote merely ’lust’ or ’licentiousness’ as it tends to be glossed by modern editors of contemporary works, its cultural lexicon was in fact more complex and fluid than that at this time. Moreover, that fuller understanding of its plural and shifting meanings-as they are examined here-has implications for the current intellectual history of the idea in Western thought. The existing narrative of luxury’s conceptual development is one of progressive upward transformation, beginning with the rise of economic liberalism amidst eighteenth-century debates; it is one that assumes essential continuity between the medieval treatment of luxury as the sin of ’luxuria’ and early modern notions of the idea even as social practises of luxury explode in early seventeenth-century culture.

Book Deadly Turbulence

Download or read book Deadly Turbulence written by Steve Pollock and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jet airliner operations in the United States began in 1958, bringing, it was thought, a new era of fast, high, safe, smooth, sophisticated travel. But almost immediately, the new aircraft were involved in incidents and accidents that showed jets created new problems even as they solved old ones. This book discusses five disasters or near-disasters of the early Jet Age, experiences which shook the industry, regulators and public out of early complacency and helped build a more realistic foundation for safer air transportation. Special attention is paid to the 1966 destruction of Braniff International Airways Flight 250 in Nebraska. Nearly two years of inquiry helped advance the understanding of jet operations in severe weather and saw the first use of cockpit voice recorder technology in an aviation accident investigation. In addition, a University of Chicago professor, Dr. Tetsuya "Ted" Fujita, conducted a more intensive investigation of the weather system which downed Flight 250. Dr. Fujita's already extensive knowledge of thunderstorms and tornadoes led to his creation of the Fujita Scale of Tornado Intensity, the F-scale that we hear about so frequently during storm season.

Book excerpt: All males born in The Tharn’s Lands are twins. One adventurous twin, Rist, travels with sold ice to see how it is used by Warmlanders. After trouble with the Solar Priests, he has to travel farther downriver, where he encounters a two-thousand-foot waterfall and a vast lowland below. Making good his escape, he finds himself in the Sisterdom of ShadowFall, a domain within Motherland, a yet more advanced matriarchal civilization. Through demonstrated skills and persistence, he overcomes prejudice and barriers, distinguishing himself as a heroic warrior. Rist’s twin, Rusk, is present back home when others uncover a large green cylinder from The Ice. This eventually is discovered to be an ancient flying craft operated by a Developing Intelligence Rusk will call Una. Rusk goes downriver to search and find Rist. Adventures ensue, resulting in a return to The Tharn’s Lands and a revolution there. From their primitive, mist-bound homeland at the foot of receding glaciers, to warmer and more civilized lands downriver and below, twin diminutive “bird-rider” warriors venture southward, taking with them the seeds of revelation and revolution. On the Moon, human colonies have likewise evolved. Those two worlds after the next Ice Age are very different places from today, but human emotions, personalities, and reactions remain unchanged. The Thaw Trilogy is a tale of future conflicts—the clash of ancient institutions and ancient technologies on an unfamiliar Earth, and remnant human colonies on Earth’s Moon. The Thaw Trilogy, incorporates three stories that first appeared in Analog—“Thaw” (July/August 2013), “Flow” (November 2014 - Hugo nominated), and “Fall” (July/August 2016). Book William Dean Howells

Download or read book William Dean Howells written by Susan Goodman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Possibly the most influential figure in the history of American letters, William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was, among other things, a leading novelist in the realist tradition, a formative influence on many of America's finest writers, and an outspoken opponent of social injustice. This biography, the first comprehensive work on Howells in fifty years, enters the consciousness of the man and his times, revealing a complicated and painfully honest figure who came of age in an era of political corruption, industrial greed, and American imperialism. Written with verve and originality in a highly absorbing style, it brings alive for a new generation a literary and cultural pioneer who played a key role in creating the American artistic ethos. William Dean Howells traces the writer's life from his boyhood in Ohio before the Civil War, to his consularship in Italy under President Lincoln, to his rise as editor of Atlantic Monthly. It looks at his writing, which included novels, poems, plays, children's books, and criticism. Howells had many powerful friendships among the literati of his day; and here we find an especially rich examination of the relationship between Howells and Mark Twain. Howells was, as Twain called him, "the boss" of literary critics—his support almost single-handedly made the careers of many writers, including African Americans like Paul Dunbar and women like Sarah Orne Jewett. Showcasing many noteworthy personalities—Henry James, Edmund Gosse, H. G. Wells, Stephen Crane, Emily Dickinson, and many others—William Dean Howells portrays a man who stood at the center of American literature through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
