The challenges described include air pollution, climate change, extreme weather, and related health impacts that range from heat stress, vector-borne diseases, food and water insecurity and chronic diseases to malnutrition and mental well-being. The influence of humans on climate change has been established through extensive published evidence and reports. However, the connections between climate change, the health of the planet and the impact on human health have not received the same level of attention. Therefore, the global focus on the public health impacts of climate change is a relatively recent area of interest. This focus is timely since scientists have concluded that changes in climate have led to new weather extremes such as floods, storms, heat waves, droughts and fires, in turn leading to more than 600,000 deaths and the displacement of nearly 4 billion people in the last 20 years. Previous work on the health impacts of climate change was limited mostly to epidemiologic approaches and outcomes and focused less on multidisciplinary, multi-faceted collaborations between physical scientists, public health researchers and policy makers. Further, there was little attention paid to faith-based and ethical approaches to the problem. The solutions and actions we explore in this book engage diverse sectors of civil society, faith leadership, and political leadership, all oriented by ethics, advocacy, and policy with a special focus on poor and vulnerable populations. The book highlights areas we think will resonate broadly with the public, faith leaders, researchers and students across disciplines including the humanities, and policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrous oxide, N2O, is the third most important (in global warming terms) of the greenhouse gases, after carbon dioxide and methane. As this book describes, although it only comprises 320 parts per billion of the earth's atmosphere, it has a so-called Global Warming Potential nearly 300 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. N2O emissions are difficult to estimate, because they are predominantly biogenic in origin. The N2O is formed in soils and oceans throughout the world, by the microbial processes of nitrification and denitrification, that utilise the reactive N compounds ammonium and nitrate, respectively. These forms of nitrogen are released during the natural biogeochemical nitrogen cycle, but are also released by human activity. In fact, the quantity of these compounds entering the biosphere has virtually doubled since the beginning of the industrial age, and this increase has been matched by a corresponding increase in N2O emissions. The largest source is now agriculture, driven mainly by the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. The other major diffuse source derives from release of NOx into the atmosphere from fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning, as well as ammonia from livestock manure. Some N2O also comes directly from combustion, and from two processes in the chemical industry: the production of nitric acid, and the production of adipic acid, used in nylon manufacture. Action is being taken to curb the industrial point-source emissions of N2O, but measures to limit or reduce agricultural emissions are inherently more difficult to devise. As we enter an era in which measures are being explored to reduce fossil fuel use and/or capture or sequester the CO2 emissions from the fuel, it is likely that the relative importance of N2O in the 'Kyoto basket' of greenhouse gases will increase, because comparable mitigation measures for N2O are inherently more difficult, and because expansion of the land area devoted to crops, to feed the increasing global population and to accommodate the current development of biofuels, is likely to lead to an increase in N fertiliser use, and thus N2O emission, worldwide. The aim of this book is to provide a synthesis of scientific information on the primary sources and sinks of nitrous oxide and an assessment of likely trends in atmospheric concentrations over the next century and the potential for mitigation measures.

Book excerpt: The warming of Earth’s surface that has occurred since 1880 has been grossly over stated and attributed entirely to carbon dioxide, based on a preposterous assumption. That assumption is: All of the warming of earth’s surface temperature during the last 140 years is due to accumulation of carbon dioxide and other minor greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. The level of carbon dioxide has increased from 290 ppm to 411 ppm. That is an increase of 121 ppm, from 0.029% to 0.041% of the atmosphere. There are other environmental forces which are much stronger, more prevalent, and active in regulating and modulating the earth’s surface temperature than carbon dioxide. These forces are, in order of impact: First, The sun; Second; The earth’s waters, Third; Heat from the earth’s core, Fourth, Atmospheric aerosols, and Fifth, Carbon dioxide and the other minor greenhouse gases. While carbon dioxide is an extremely important substance in the support of life on this planet its contribution to the greenhouse effect is a “bit part” not a “leading role”. There are three fatally flawed assumptions and six Fatal Flaws at the heart of the Global Warming theory. Each is discussed in this book,; the flaws identified and evidence presented. These Flaws originated, when, in forming the “Theory of Global Warming,” the contributions of the four most important environmental forces involved in the control of the Earth’s surface temperature were assumed to have had no effect on the warming trend. Because of the single dimension models used in climate research the contributions of these four climate controlling forces are mistakenly credited to climate forcing by carbon dioxide. The remaining two fatal flaws concern carbon dioxide, its roles and fate in nature. The contents of this work will challenge what most people believe about the global warming theory. Read and contemplate this work and the supporting evidence, then you be the judge.

The control of the earth’s climate, including the temperature of the earth’s surface and near earth atmosphere, is a complex, intricate, and beautiful system of interactions between a number of forces. These controlling factors, their interactions, and the rate and extent of those interactions, are all variables which contribute to the control of the earth’s climate, including its surface temperature. I first became aware of the "Theory of Global Warming" in the late 1980's when I first found the document: (Hansen, J.E., and S. Lebedeff, 1987: Global trends of measured surface air temperature. J. Geophys. Res., 92;13345-13372). As a fruit grower during my youth; A professional horticultural researcher who had worked on different methods of frost control in fruit crops, and in basic research in those areas as well as related subjects; I was acutely aware of the greenhouse effect, its causes, and importance in the control of earth's surface temperature. The temperature of plant tissues, under various climatic circumstances has been something that has intrigued me and been a subject of my research for over 50 years. The small, but significant, increase in the earth's surface temperature, over the last 110 years has been attributed to slight increases in the concentration of carbon dioxide, methane, and other minor greenhouse gasses. The danger to the world's societies, of our present course, the result of attributing all the warming of earth's surface to the greenhouse impact of these minor greenhouse gasses, is real and alarming. If we utilize most of our available resources in limiting or decreasing the concentration of these minor greenhouse gasses, we will not have the resources required to deal with the real impacts of the major forces behind the warming of earth's surface, should they continue or increase. In this work you will be exposed to the truth about the flaws and fails of the global warming/climate change theory. You will read about, and see peer reviewed research that establishes the impacts of: A. The three forces which have increased the intensity of the sunlight reaching and warming the earth's surface. B. The role of the LaNina/ElNino cycle and the North Atlantic Oscillation in causing a major portion of the ice volume loss in, and warming of, the Arctic. C. The role of increasing levels of heat from the earth's core in causing significant ice volume and extent losses, across the Arctic and Antarctic. D. Changes in the amount of water vapor, liquid and ice in the atmosphere over long periods of time, and this forces contribution to changes in climatic patterns and earth's surface temperature. You will also be exposed to the climatic impacts of the increasing aerosol concentration in the atmosphere. The above listed causes of changes in the earth's surface temperature have all been mistakenly attributed to the greenhouse effect of the minor greenhouse gasses because of the basic Fatal Fails of the "Global Warming/Climate Change Theory". These Fatal Fails are identified and discussed in this work.

The remaining 70 percent is absorbed by earth and re-emitted outward as long-wave—or infra-red—radiation. While transparent to incoming solar radiation, certain gases--notably carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, and chlorofluorocarbons—absorb, or "trap," this outgoing infra-red radiation near the earth's surface, producing an increase in temperature. This is the so-called greenhouse effect. The greater the concentration of these greenhouse gases, the more pronounced will be the effect. Despite uncertainties, the scientific consensus recorded at Villach, Austria, in 1985 was that "the understanding of the greenhouse question is sufficiently developed that scientists and policy-makers should begin an active collaboration to explore the effectiveness of alternatives and adjustments." The recent scientific assessment of climate change, conducted under the auspices of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has only strengthened the view that a concerted multilateral response is called for.

Beginning in the year 1979 at the first world climate summit a worldwide binding climate protection was first passed in December 1997 when the United Nations established a protocol at the Nations Conference in Kyoto which has the aim to "stabilize the amount of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system"1. The protocol establishes legally binding commitments for the reduction of greenhouse gases. So far 183 states have ratified the protocol. Furthermore three different Kyoto Mechanisms will be explained, that are to help to achieve the agreed climate goals. One of these mechanisms is Emission Trading that is used on the one hand on national level within the Kyoto Protocol and on the other hand on company level. Increasing risk of irreversible changes due to large scale shift in the climate system such as several sensitive species of ocean corals, aquatic birds, reptiles such as sea turtles and amphibians are facing extinction, failing of crops cause famine in many East African countries, decrease in potable water in Mediterranean and Southern Africa and increasing intensity of extreme events such as forest fires (Australia and Indonesia), flooding(Bangladesh) , storm events (tornadoes and hurricanes in USA), droughts (Sahel region) and deadly heat waves (in India 2015) recorded in many parts of the world. Anthropogenic release of greenhouse gases CO2, CH4, water vapour, N2O, O3, HFCs, PFCs and SF6¬reflects a portion of solar energy back to the earth, this increases the temperature, causes changes in ocean currents, seasonal weather patterns and ultimately changes the climate. Deforestation reduces the CO2 sink and it further enhances the greenhouse effect. Several mitigation methods such as use of alternative green energy sources, reducing the use of fossil fuels, use of greenhouse gas reduction techniques to mitigate the emission. Methods such as carbon capture & carbon sequestration, afforestation, reforestation, protection of existing forest reserves, silviculture and agro forestry are being facilitated by several international, government and non-governmental organizations. Climate change issue can be handled either adapting to the change or disaster risk reduction. UNDP has suggested a three step method to work on Carbon finance consist of removal of barriers to climate friendly technologies, establishing efficient host country procedures for clean development mechanism (CDM) and develop projects via millennium development goal (MDG) carbon facility. An Integrated Territorial Climate Plan (ITCP) was designed for regional governments to plan their activities including financing climate change mitigation process. This paper briefly evaluates anthropocene global climate change and its human solutions.
