Book excerpt: A hurricane isn’t the only trouble looming as a family assembles for a will reading in this sequel to Iron Lace by a USA Today–bestselling author. Nine people have gathered for the reading of Aurore Gerritsen’s will. Some are family, others are strangers. But all will have their futures changed forever when a lifetime of secrets is finally revealed. Aurore Gerritsen left clear instructions: her will is to be read over a four-day period at her summer cottage on a small Louisiana island. Those who don’t stay will forfeit their inheritance. With the vast fortune of Gulf Coast Shipping at stake, no one will take that risk. Tensions rise as Aurore’s lawyer dispenses small bequests, each designed to expose the matriarch’s well-kept secrets. Longtime loyalties are jeopardized, and shocking new alliances are formed as the family feels the sands of belief shifting beneath their feet. As a hurricane approaches and survival itself is threatened, the fourth day dawns and everyone waits for the final truth to be revealed. Praise for Rising Tides “Richards’s ability to portray compelling characters who grapple with challenging family issues is laudable.” —Publishers Weekly “This novel features a multilayered plot, vivid descriptions, and a keen sense of time and place.” —Library Journal

The dead are coming back to life, filled with a single-minded urge to devour the living. While the power was on, some people follow the bigger picture on television, but the news media is little more than a chronicler of the disaster. Sadly, most people are better at becoming part of the problem than finding a way to solve it. "The most important question becomes: Are there enough resilient survivors left to stem the rising dead tide of humanity?"

What is the transformative power of moral resolve? How can clear thinking stand against the lies and illogic that batter the chances for positive change? What are useful answers to the recurring questions of a storm–threatened time – What can anyone do? Is there any hope? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2002 – Best Book on Ethnic and Racial Political Ideology and/or Political Theory – Organized Section on Race, Ethnicity, and Politics of the American Political Science Association "...awash under a brown tide...the relentless flow of immigrants..like waves on a beach, these human flows are remaking the face of America...." Since 1993, metaphorical language such as this has permeated mainstream media reporting on the United States' growing Latino population. In this groundbreaking book, Otto Santa Ana argues that far from being mere figures of speech, such metaphors produce and sustain negative public perceptions of the Latino community and its place in American society, precluding the view that Latinos are vested with the same rights and privileges as other citizens. Applying the insights of cognitive metaphor theory to an extensive natural language data set drawn from hundreds of articles in the Los Angeles Times and other media, Santa Ana reveals how metaphorical language portrays Latinos as invaders, outsiders, burdens, parasites, diseases, animals, and weeds. He convincingly demonstrates that three anti-Latino referenda passed in California because of such imagery, particularly the infamous anti-immigrant measure, Proposition 187. Santa Ana illustrates how Proposition 209 organizers broadcast compelling new metaphors about racism to persuade an electorate that had previously supported affirmative action to ban it. He also shows how Proposition 227 supporters used antiquated metaphors for learning, school, and language to blame Latino children's speech—rather than gross structural inequity—for their schools' failure to educate them. Santa Ana concludes by calling for the creation of insurgent metaphors to contest oppressive U.S. public discourse about minority communities.

To the northeast, Bronte’s followers fight to the death for Tanglewood Island. Further inland the soldier, Jacobs, befriends a group of kids and finds them a haven at a small walled house they aptly dub the Alamo. Meanwhile, President Foster’s wife, Julie, convinces a group of soldiers to take her back to her husband. Find out, too, what trouble Dead-Eye Johnny jumped into when he leapt off the Skyway and fell onto a cruise ship! Others like Trish and Natalie face terrible odds on their own. Behind all of it is a shadowy corporation, a runaway scientist and a cut-throat mobster, all determined to secure what is best for themselves! Humanity is in its death throes and still the survivors of the apocalypse struggle with and embrace friendship, love, lust, envy, hate, rage and cruelty beyond measure. The grueling task of finding a safe haven and securing supplies is far more difficult than it should be simply due to human nature. For the privileged, protected elite, that task has been a burden shouldered by others as they wait in bunkers, or take the sun on the decks of yachts. The average survivor does what he or she has to, or what they can live with to survive. Until now. Witness the best and the worst that humanity has to offer as the dead tide surges, and what is left of civilization sinks into a morass of madness.

Book excerpt: RESIST THE ZOMBIE PLAGUE! Top authors bring new perspectives to John Ringo’s Black Tide Rising universe, in which humanity fights back against the hordes of infected. The news that humanity had been dreading for ages had come true. Zombies are real. Worst of all, we created them. The apocalypse was upon us, and every man, woman and child had to answer a simple question of themselves: “What do we do now?” For a group of neighbors in the Chicago suburbs of Northern Indiana, it was “work together or die” . . . and figure out how to live on top of oil storage tanks to keep the zombies at bay. For the Biological Emergency Response Teams in New York City, it was “how long can we fight off the infected before it's too late” . . . as well as having to fight other groups all out to claim a dwindling stock of supplies and safety. And for a group of cheerleaders, it was about the end of their world. And about what happens when you get a group of physically fit young women with guns really, really angry. Featuring original stories from some of the brightest stars in the science fiction universe: John Ringo; Eric Flint, John Scalzi & Dave Klecha, Sarah A. Hoyt, Jody Lynn Nye, Michael Z. Williamson, Kacey Ezell, and more. Praise for Black Tide Rising: “. . . an entertaining batch of . . . action-packed tales. Certainly, fans of Ringo’s particular brand of action-adventure will be pleased.” —Booklist “This anthology broadens Ringo’s Black Tide world, serving up doses of humanity amid the ravenous afflicted. Comedy has a place in this harsh reality, and these stories stir adventure and emotion at a frantic clip throughout. Zombie fiction fans will be thrilled.” —Library Journal Praise for the Black Tide Rising Series: “Not only has Ringo found a mostly unexplored corner of the zombie landscape, he's using the zombie frame to tackle a broader theme: the collapse and rebirth of civilization. The zombie scenes are exciting, sure, but its the human story that keeps us involved. A fine series.” —Booklist Praise for Under a Graveyard Sky: “Ringo combines humor and horror in this strong series debut, the thinking reader’s zombie novel.” —Publishers Weekly Praise for John Ringo: “[Ringo’s work is] peopled with three-dimensional characters and spiced with personal drama as well as tactical finesse.” —Library Journal “. . . NAMED ONE OF THE BEST CRIME NOVELS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW • “Riveting . . . one of the series’ more powerful recent entries.”—Publishers Weekly When kidnappers choose a broken-down waterside slum as the site of a ransom exchange for the wife of wealthy real estate developer Harry Exeter, the Thames River Police and Commander William Monk shadow Harry to the spot to ensure that no harm comes to him or his captive wife. But on arrival, Monk and five of his best men are attacked from all sides. Praise for Dark Tide Rising “Perry makes cunning work of the plot, which raises issues of trust and loyalty while driving home a grim message about the vulnerability of women who entrust their fortunes to unscrupulous men.”—The New York Times Book Review “One of the most successful of prolific Perry’s recent Victorian melodramas. The opening chapters are appropriately portentous, the mystification is authentic, and if the final surprise isn’t exactly a shock, it’s so well-prepared that even readers who don’t gasp will nod in satisfaction.”—Kirkus Reviews “Another deftly crafted gem of a suspense thriller by a master of the mystery genre . . . a ‘must read.’ ”—Midwest Book Review “Superb . . . [a] brilliant piece of historical fiction . . . No one writes Victorian-era stories quite like Perry.”—BookReporter
