Book DEA Based Benchmarking Models in Supply Chain Management

Download or read book DEA Based Benchmarking Models in Supply Chain Management written by Gurdal Ertek and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a mathematical methodology for benchmarking a group of entities in a group. The inputs of a DEA model are the resources that the entity consumes, and the outputs of the outputs are the desired outcomes generated by the entity, by using the inputs. DEA returns important benchmarking metrics, including efficiency score, reference set, and projections. While DEA has been extensively applied in supply chain management (SCM) as well as a diverse range of other fields, it is not clear what has been done in the literature in the past, especially given the domain, the model details, and the country of application. Also, it is not clear what would be an acceptable number of DMUs in comparison to existing research. This paper follows a recipe-based approach, listing the main characteristics of the DEA models for supply chain management. This way, practitioners in the field can build their own models without having to perform detailed literature search. Further guidelines are also provided in the paper for practitioners, regarding the application of DEA in SCM benchmarking.

Book Quantitative Models for Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking

Download or read book Quantitative Models for Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking written by Joe Zhu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is one of the prominent researchers in the field of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a powerful data analysis tool that can be used in performance evaluation and benchmarking. This book is based upon the author’s years of research and teaching experiences. It is difficult to evaluate an organization’s performance when multiple performance metrics are present. The difficulties are further enhanced when the relationships among the performance metrics are complex and involve unknown tradeoffs. This book introduces Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) as a multiple-measure performance evaluation and benchmarking tool. The focus of performance evaluation and benchmarking is shifted from characterizing performance in terms of single measures to evaluating performance as a multidimensional systems perspective. Conventional and new DEA approaches are presented and discussed using Excel spreadsheets — one of the most effective ways to analyze and evaluate decision alternatives. The user can easily develop and customize new DEA models based upon these spreadsheets. DEA models and approaches are presented to deal with performance evaluation problems in a variety of contexts. For example, a context-dependent DEA measures the relative attractiveness of similar operations/processes/products. Sensitivity analysis techniques can be easily applied, and used to identify critical performance measures. Two-stage network efficiency models can be utilized to study performance of supply chain. DEA benchmarking models extend DEA’s ability in performance evaluation. Various cross efficiency approaches are presented to provide peer evaluation scores. This book also provides an easy-to-use DEA software — DEAFrontier. This DEAFrontier is an Add-In for Microsoft® Excel and provides a custom menu of DEA approaches. This version of DEAFrontier is for use with Excel 97-2013 under Windows and can solve up to 50 DMUs, subject to the capacity of Excel Solver. It is an extremely powerful tool that can assist decision-makers in benchmarking and analyzing complex operational performance issues in manufacturing organizations as well as evaluating processes in banking, retail, franchising, health care, public services and many other industries.

Book Quantitative Models for Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking

Download or read book Quantitative Models for Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking written by Joe Zhu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managers are often under great pressure to improve the performance of their organizations. To improve performance, one needs to constantly evaluate operations or processes related to producing products, providing services, and marketing and selling products. Performance evaluation and benchmarking are a widely used method to identify and adopt best practices as a means to improve performance and increase productivity, and are particularly valuable when no objective or engineered standard is available to define efficient and effective performance. For this reason, benchmarking is often used in managing service operations, because service standards (benchmarks) are more difficult to define than manufacturing standards. Benchmarks can be established but they are somewhat limited as they work with single measurements one at a time. It is difficult to evaluate an organization’s performance when there are multiple inputs and outputs to the system. The difficulties are further enhanced when the relationships between the inputs and the outputs are complex and involve unknown tradeoffs. It is critical to show benchmarks where multiple measurements exist. The current book introduces the methodology of data envelopment analysis (DEA) and its uses in performance evaluation and benchmarking under the context of multiple performance measures.

Book Evaluation and design of supply chain operations using DEA

Download or read book Evaluation and design of supply chain operations using DEA written by Chien-Ming Chen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance evaluation has been one of the most critical components in management. As production systems nowadays consist of a growing number of integrated and interacting processes, the interrelationship and dynamic among processes have create a major challenge in measuring system and process performance. Meanwhile, rapid information obsolescence has become a commonplace in today’s high-velocity environment. Managers therefore need to make process design decisions based on incomplete information regarding the future market. This thesis studies the above problems in the evaluation and design of complex production systems. Based on the widely used Data Envelopment Analysis models, we develop a generalized methodology to evaluate the dynamic efficiency of production networks. Our method evaluates both the supply network and its constituent firms in a systematic way. The evaluation result can help identify inefficiency in the network, which is important information for improving the network performance. Part II of the thesis covers multi-criteria process design methods developed for situations of different information availability. Our design approaches combine interdisciplinary techniques to facilitate efficient decision-making in situations with limited information and high uncertainty. As an illustration, we apply these approaches to project selection and resource allocation problems in a supply chain.

Book Supply Chain Performance Evaluation

Download or read book Supply Chain Performance Evaluation written by Farhad Hosseinzadeh Lotfi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book tried to make these experiences available to those interested, considering the experience of several years of training, research, and implementation of projects in the supply chain performance evaluation field. This book intends to identify the current performance and competitive position of that supply chain compared to other supply chains by presenting and reviewing the techniques and models for measuring the efficiency and performance of the supply chain. Determining the performance of a supply chain is a good description of the status quo (what is). Determining the performance of a supply chain is useful for describing the past and present of supply chain processes, and on the other hand, it can be used to set performance goals and initiate the improvement process. To realize this, a strategic framework or model is needed to be able to extract indicators related to the efficiency of the supply chain and design the appropriate model.

Book Efficiency Analysis of Supply Chain Processes

Download or read book Efficiency Analysis of Supply Chain Processes written by Gerald Reiner and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an integrated benchmarking approach. To analyse the performance of inter-organizational (supply chain) processes at company level we combine dependency analysis and data envelopment analysis (DEA). DEA has been proven to be a powerful tool for benchmarking processes and for identifying the most efficient ones. Before using DEA analysis the inputs and outputs as well as the relevant dependencies have to be identified. To support the determination of input and output variables we propose to use dependency analysis. We illustrate the application of this integrated approach by analysing the results of an empirical benchmarking study of 65 European and North American companies. The study shows that make-to-stock is still the predominating manufacturing strategy of the analysed industries. Therefore, we utilize different DEA models with weight restrictions only for companies with a make-to-stock strategy. The results support our basic hypotheses that efficient supply chains lead to high financial performance. Furthermore they indicate improvement potential for the benchmarked supply chain processes.

Book Frontier Based Performance Analysis Models for Supply Chain Management

Download or read book Frontier Based Performance Analysis Models for Supply Chain Management written by Per J. Agrell and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective supply chain management relies on information integration and implementation of best practice techniques across the chain. Supply chains are examples of complex multi-stage systems with temporal and causal interrelations, operating multi-input and multi-output production and services under utilization of fixed and variable resources. Acknowledging the lack of system's view, the need to identify system-wide and individual effects as well as incorporating a coherent set of performance metrics, the recent literature reports on an increasing, but yet limited, number of applications of frontier analysis models (e.g. DEA) for the performance assessment of supply chains or networks. The relevant models in this respect are multi-stage models with various assumptions on the intermediate outputs and inputs, enabling the derivation of metrics for technical and cost efficiencies for the system as well as the autonomous links. This paper reviews the state of the art in network DEA modeling, in particular two-stage models, along with a critical review of the advanced applications that are reported in terms of the consistency of the underlying assumptions and the results derived. Consolidating current work in this range using the unified notations and comparison of the properties of the presented models, the paper is closed with recommendations for future research in terms of both theory and application.
