Book excerpt: "Was Michiel de Ruyter the greatest sea commander who ever lived? Or simply the greatest sea-commander of the 17th century? Some people see him as the man who saved the Dutch Republic, and ensured its independence. He knew how to fight a sea-battle on the grandest scale. He could also haggle like a canny Dutch merchant, achieving the release of Hungarian clergymen from Spanish captivity and that of Dutch sailors from barbarian imprisonment. Louis XIV, often his opponent, called him 'a man who did honour to humanity'. In this book, nine leading historical authorities, from seven different countries, examine his astonishing career."--Book jacket.

Book The Gig Economy

Download or read book The Gig Economy written by Alex de Ruyter and published by Economy Key Ideas. This book was released on 2019 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "gig economy" is a relatively recent term coined to describe a range of working arrangements that have previously been denoted as precarious, flexible and contingent. Borrowed from musicians, a "gig" describes a one-night performance, but in the context of general employment, it covers the self-employed who work for hire, those on temporary, short-term contracts and on zero-hours contracts. In this concise overview, Alex de Ruyter and Martyn Brown explain the key facets of the gig economy and explore the dangers and potential it affords. Drawing on recent case-studies from the UK, Europe and the USA, it offers an authoritative guide through the theories and issues that surround the gig economy. --

This book provides a vivid and engaging portrait of this remarkable figure, tracing his career from his early days as a merchant sailor to his rise to command in the Dutch navy. Written by G. Grinnellmilne, a distinguished naval historian, Life of Lieut-Admiral de Ruyter offers a thrilling account of the naval battles and campaigns in which de Ruyter played a key role, and sheds light on the wider context of the Dutch Republic's struggle for power and influence in Europe. "adieu Foe Ever." the attempt on the french west indies--home life--the operations of 1675-76 death. With the conclusion of the war of 1672-73, de Ruyter's fame as a seaman again increased. His masterly conduct of the contest against the two most powerful nations in Europe, was a source of universal admiration. The bold attack at Solebay, which defeated the plan of invasion in 1672, the patient defensive strategy in the shoals of Schooneveldt, when the navy of the Netherlands had been unavoidably reduced in strength, followed as it was by two repulses inflicted on the superior fleets of the Allies, had greatly impressed his contemporaries. When to these triumphs succeeded the battle of Kykduin, and the eventual relief of Holland from all threats by sea, de Ruyter's renown passed all previous limits. While it was seen how his unremitting attention to details had shaped the Dutch navy to the requirements of his strategy, it is possible that the deterioration which was proceeding on the other side of the Channel, and its results in assisting de Ruyter's success, may have been overlooked, as well as the want of the determination to combat the Dutch with the same untiring energy as in Cromwell's war.f The English nation had given Charles but very grudging assistance in his two wars. This was probably fully understood by the Prince of Orange, who felt so secure in regard to the future policy of his uncle, that he now ventured, under de Ruyter's advice, while reducing the navy, to allow the preparation of a fleet destined to attack the French Antilles. On the 27th of February, 1674, de Ruyter had taken the oath of allegiance to the Prince,

Book Moral Education and Development

Download or read book Moral Education and Development written by Doret J. de Ruyter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worries about the moral standard of younger generations are of all ages. The older generation tends to believe that the moral education of young people deserves special attention, because their moral development does not reach the level adults hope for. This observation does not mean that the older generation is necessarily wrong, but what it indisputably does show is that they attach high importance to morality and moral education. But, what characterises a moral person? What influences people to behave morally? What should moral education involve? Which (inter)disciplinary contributions are relevant to improving moral education? These questions continuously deserve the attention of academics, students and (professional) educators. This book is divided into four parts. The first part focuses on interdisciplinary empirical research about the reasons why people act morally and the consequences for moral education. The primarily philosophical chapters of the second part address the question what it means to be a moral person and the implication of this elucidation for moral education. The third part contains five chapters that deal with moral aspects of sex education and civic education. The fourth part consists of one chapter that looks at the moral education of students who will work in a pedagogical or educational environment, arguing that one’s moral development requires a lifetime commitment. This book is written for a wide academic audience. The collection of chapters will be of interest to pedagogues, educational scientists, moral philosophers and moral psychologists, and to both newcomers and experts in the field.

Up to that time, her life had been one of luxury and privilege. As both of Kitty's parents were devout Christians, her day started with a hymn and a scripture from the Bible. When the Japanese arrived on Java, all men, including Kitty's father, were immediately placed in prison camps. Kitty's father escaped and formed a resistance among the Indonesians, although he was later recaptured.
