Download or read book Approximation Theory written by Ole Christensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 1080 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concisely written book gives an elementary introduction to a classical area of mathematics—approximation theory—in a way that naturally leads to the modern field of wavelets. The exposition, driven by ideas rather than technical details and proofs, demonstrates the dynamic nature of mathematics and the influence of classical disciplines on many areas of modern mathematics and applications. Key features and topics: * Description of wavelets in words rather than mathematical symbols * Elementary introduction to approximation using polynomials (Weierstrass’ and Taylor’s theorems) * Introduction to infinite series, with emphasis on approximation-theoretic aspects * Introduction to Fourier analysis * Numerous classical, illustrative examples and constructions * Discussion of the role of wavelets in digital signal processing and data compression, such as the FBI’s use of wavelets to store fingerprints * Minimal prerequisites: elementary calculus * Exercises that may be used in undergraduate and graduate courses on infinite series and Fourier series Approximation Theory: From Taylor Polynomials to Wavelets will be an excellent textbook or self-study reference for students and instructors in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. Readers will find motivation and background material pointing toward advanced literature and research topics in pure and applied harmonic analysis and related areas.

Download or read book Art and Utopia written by Jean-François Chevrier and published by Actar, Museu D'Art Contemporani de Barcelona. This book was released on 2005 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970, Marcel Broodthaers claimed that Mallarma is the source of all contemporary art. Those words serve as a departure point for the exhibition and catalogue, Art and Utopia. Based on Marcel Broodthaers's interpretation of and Mallarma's influence on such seminal figures of modernity as Artaud and Apollinaire, this book reinterprets 20th century art, from Cubism to the historical avant-garde movements to the art of the 1970s, questioning the very idea of modernity. The information contained in this catalogue is highly varied--in addition to an essay by Jean-Francois Chevrier, the publication includes abundant documentary material, poetry, and other literary texts, as well as reproductions of the works from the exhibition.

Download or read book Wassily Kandinsky 1866 1944 written by Hajo Düchting and published by Taschen. This book was released on 2000 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founder of abstract art The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who later lived in Germany and France, is one of the pioneers of twentieth-century art. Nowadays he is regarded as the founder of abstract art and is, moreover, the chief theoretician of this type of painting. Together with Franz Marc and others he founded the group of artists known as the "Blauer Reiter" in Munich. His art then freed itself more and more from the object, eventually culminating in the "First Abstract Watercolour" of 1910. In his theoretical writings Kandinsky repeatedly sought the proximity of music; and just as in music, where the individual notes constitute the medium whose effect stems from harmony and euphony, Kandinsky was aiming for a pure concord of colour through the interplay of various shades. Gauguin had demanded that everything "must be sacrificed to pure colours". Kandinsky was the first to realise this and thus to influence a whole range of artists. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions
