Book Heresy and Orthodoxy in Sixteenth Century Paris Fran ois Le Picart and the Beginnings of the Catholic Reformation

Download or read book Heresy and Orthodoxy in Sixteenth Century Paris Fran ois Le Picart and the Beginnings of the Catholic Reformation written by Larissa Juliet Taylor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Paris from the Reformation to the Religious Wars. Through the works of François Le Picart, the most popular preacher from 1530-1556, the book delineates the increasing tensions sparked by Reformation ideas. Targeted by Calvin and Beza, Le Picart was considered the reason Paris remained in the Catholic fold. Exiled by Francis I for his incendiary preaching, he would later serve as a professor and lecturer coming into close contact with the first Jesuits. A fierce opponent of heresy, he helped compile the Articles of Faith, read heretical books, lectured on scripture, and presided at executions. His 270 sermons, the only substantial preaching source for this period, offer glimpses of life during these increasingly troubled times that challenge works by Denis Crouzet suggesting that France was in the grip of eschatological anguish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features an extraordinary album of ornament designs by the French architect Gilles-Marie Oppenord (1672-1742). For the first time, this publication reproduces in their initial state the embellishments Oppenord drew over the first French edition of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia. In lieu of a haphazard succession of sketches, it reveals Oppenord's fascinating interplay between text, engraved and drawn images, one patterned on the art of conversation and the linguistic games cultivated in elite Parisian circles.

Book D claration Des Hystoires

Download or read book D claration Des Hystoires written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1990 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses principally the iconography and text of a mid 15th century copy of the mystical treatise "Horloge de Sapience" in the most sumptuously illuminated ms. known of the text. Each of the 36 illuminations is discussed in turn, with reference to their pictorial traditions, to the French textual matter and to a unique contemporary commentary, called the "Declaration des hystoires," The "Declaration" is one of the earliest essays in the history of art criticism to survive. The study is rendered useful for teachers and scholars by an English translation of the text of the "Declaration," which enables the reader to see the illustrations through the eyes of a 15th century critic.

Book Nobility and Annihilation in Marguerite Porete s Mirror of Simple Souls

Download or read book Nobility and Annihilation in Marguerite Porete s Mirror of Simple Souls written by Joanne Maguire Robinson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book-length study of Marguerite Porete's important mystical text, The Mirror of Simple Souls, examines Porete's esoteric and optimistic doctrine of annihilation—the complete transformative union of the soul into God—in its philosophical and historical contexts. Porete was burned at the stake as a relapsed heretic in 1310. Her theological treatise survived the flames, but it circulated anonymously or under male pseudonyms until 1946, and her message endures as testament to a distinctive form of medieval spirituality. Robinson begins by focusing on traditional speculations regarding the origin, nature, limitations, and destiny of humankind. She then examines Porete's work in its more immediate historical and literary contexts, focusing on the ways in which Porete conceptualizes and expresses her radical doctrine of annihilation through contemporary metaphors of lineage and nobility.
