Book The Irenical Theology of Th ophile Brachet de La Milleti re 1588 1665

Download or read book The Irenical Theology of Th ophile Brachet de La Milleti re 1588 1665 written by R.J.M. van de Schoor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study the content and background of La Milletière's irenism are analysed and compared to the irenism of Hugo Grotius, who strove for unity in this same period. The reactions which La Milletière's books and pamphlets provoked are related to the rival groups within each confession: Jansenists versus Jesuits, the scholars of Saumur versus orthodox theologians like Rivet and Du Moulin and the ministers of Charenton. Richelieu's conciliatory religious policy was experienced by the oppressed French Calvinists as a major threat to the integrity of their doctrine. When one of their co-religionists, La Milletière, began to propagate a reunification of Protestants and Roman-Catholics, they did not fail to recognize these irenic proposals as Richelieu's. On the other hand, the Roman Catholics mistrusted this peacemaker as well. This book therefore offers a contribution to the history of irenism, as well as an analysis of the religious situation in France in the first half of the seventeenth century.

Book The Order of Minims in Seventeenth Century France

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking of the text from the Dies frae (S. Matthew, XXV, 40). It is also probable that this other Saint Francis, partly out of admiration for his illustrious compatriot of Assisi and partly from a compelling urge to be superlative in all things, chose the title in opposition to the Franciscans, the Fratres Minori, l who had previously adopted this style taken from Saint Matthew, XXIII, 8. The title "Minim" was confirmed in these words" ... eosque Eremitos Ordinis Minimorum Fratrum Eremitarum F. Francesci de Paula in posterum nuncupari," taken from the Papal Bull, Meritis religiosae vitae, of 26 February, 1493. The earliest reference to the Order in France is in a fragment preserved in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal called, La regle et vie de Frere Franfois, pauvre et humble hermite de Paule, laquelle donne a tous ses 2 freres voulant entrer et vivre en son ordre. The dating of this manuscript should be accepted with considerable reserve; it bears a clearly legible "1474," although it seems most unlikely that any reference to an Order occurred before the Bull of 1493 or that any Rule appeared in French before the Founder's visit to Louis XI in 1483. 3 The fame of Francis and his reputation as a "guerisseur" had reached the French court where Louis XI was sick and dying; the King summoned him to the chateau of Le Plessis-Ies-Tours, but it required the intervention of the Pope to make the hermit undertake the journey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian cultures across the centuries have invoked Judaism in order to debate, represent, and contain the dangers presented by the sensual nature of art. By engaging Judaism, both real and imagined, they explored and expanded the perils and possibilities for Christian representation of the material world. The thirteen essays in Judaism and Christian Art reveal that Christian art has always defined itself through the figures of Judaism that it produces. From its beginnings, Christianity confronted a host of questions about visual representation. Should Christians make art, or does attention to the beautiful works of human hands constitute a misplaced emphasis on the things of this world or, worse, a form of idolatry ("Thou shalt make no graven image")? And if art is allowed, upon what styles, motifs, and symbols should it draw? Christian artists, theologians, and philosophers answered these questions and many others by thinking about and representing the relationship of Christianity to Judaism. This volume is the first dedicated to the long history, from the catacombs to colonialism but with special emphasis on the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, of the ways in which Christian art deployed cohorts of "Jews"—more figurative than real—in order to conquer, defend, and explore its own territory.

Book Reform Catholicism and the International Suppression of the Jesuits in Enlightenment Europe

Download or read book Reform Catholicism and the International Suppression of the Jesuits in Enlightenment Europe written by Dale K. Van Kley and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the role of Reform Catholicism in the international suppression of the Jesuits in 1773†‹ The Jesuits devoted themselves to preaching the word of God, administering the sacraments, and spreading the faith by missions in both Europe and newly discovered lands abroad. But, in 1773, under intense pressure from the monarchs of Europe, the papacy suppressed the Society of Jesus, an act that reverberated from Europe to the Americas and Southeast Asia. In this scholarly history, Dale Van Kley argues that Reform Catholicism, not a secular Enlightenment, provided the justification for Catholic kings to suppress a society instituted by the papacy. Spanning the years from the mid†‘sixteenth century to the onset of the French Revolution, and the Jesuit presence from China to Brazil, this is the only single volume in English to make coherent sense of the series of expulsions that add up to what was arguably the most important religious event in Europe of the time, resulting in the secularization of tens of thousands of Jesuits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In You Looked At Me, Claudine Moine writes a profound autobiographical account of her own spiritual development. Impacted by her experiences as a refugee from the Thirty Years’ War, Moine relates a detailed narrative of God’s involvement in her life, comprising times of favour, temptation, transverberation and mystical marriage, and the state of darkness that caused her to cease writing. Illuminated by the translation and collation of Rev. Gerard Carroll, You Looked At Me is a work of extraordinary spiritual and theological richness, offering insights for spiritual seekers and historical researchers alike. It stands in the company of Julian of Norwich’s Revelations of Divine Love and The Cloud of Unknowing as a crucial text of historical spirituality.

Book Church and Society in Eighteenth century France The religion of the people and the politics of religion

Download or read book Church and Society in Eighteenth century France The religion of the people and the politics of religion written by John McManners and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume begins with a Section on the religion of the people. The clergy offered the liturgical services, sermons, evangelistic missions, and the offices sanctifying birth, marriage, and death; distinctions are made between what they intended and how their ministrations were popularly interpreted and incorporated into the social order. Statistical soundings concerning the extent of religious practice and the degree of conviction involved are evaluated. Further chapters deal with processions, pilgrimages, and popular practices and superstitions, with hermits and confraternities, with the impact of reading the Bible and other edifying literature in an age of increasing literacy. Finally comes a view of the twilight world of magic and sorcery. Throughout this Section the comments of theologians and thinkers of the Enlightenment are recorded, whether in coincidence or contradiction. The next section deals with the efficacy of the confessional and the role of the casuistry of the Church in attempting to mould sexual mores, business practices, and in the world of the theatre. In the next two Sections, the role of religious issues in political affairs is detailed. An overview of the Jansenist quarrel and of the activities of the Jesuits brings in the story of the struggle between Crown and Parlement, while an extended portrayal of the life of the Protestant and Jewish communities leads to the history of the debate on toleration, involving the Gallican Church in political interventions and controversy. Throughout the two volumes the rising forces of anticlericalism and the tensions within the ecclesiastical establishment have been recorded, and these themes come to their climax in a final section on the role played by churchmen in the coming of the Revolution.
