Download or read book Astronomy a Handbook written by G.D. Roth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several decades have elapsed since the publication of any similar book in the German language. The lack of such a book has been felt keenly by all friends of astronomy. In our space age, astronomical knowledge arouses public interest more and more. Practical observation at the telescope depends more than anything else on such knowledge. The educational value of such a training is undisputed. On the other hand, the work of the amateur astronomer can also contribute essentially to the work of the professionals. It is from these points of view that this handbook aims to help with versatile advice. At the same time, the book intends to show the wide range of applied astronomy, as it presents itself to the friend of the stars; in mathematical-physical fields, in precision mechanics and optics, and last but not least in the area of social relations. Beyond the circle of amateur astronomers the book is addressed to lecturers, teachers, students and pupils. It wishes to serve them as a guide to "astronomical experiments", which we suggest should be performed in primary and secondary schools, specialist colleges, and extramural courses.

Book Daytime and Evening Exercises in Astronomy for Schools and Colleges

Download or read book Daytime and Evening Exercises in Astronomy for Schools and Colleges written by Sarah Frances Whiting and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daytime and Evening Exercises in Astronomy, for Schools and Colleges Astronomy is the last of the sciences to use the laboratory method in teaching its elementary classes. The reason of this is not far to seek. Since no instrument has been invented capable of piercing the clouds, observational work has always been dependent on the caprice of the weather. Photography now furnishes perfect representations of sun, moon, planets, and stars, for daytime study; also many forms of illustrative apparatus can be used by the student to awake and cultivate his imagination and furnish, at firsthand, data for scientific reasoning. This oldest of the sciences, which has heretofore been a rigid discipline for the few, should now take its place beside the others as a training in the scientific method for the many who pursue the subject chiefly for information and culture. The management of schools and colleges should make the same allowance of time and money for laboratory instruction in this as in the other sciences; there should be a laboratory, a demonstrator, and fixed hours for students' daytime work. Besides the ordinary instruments of an observatory there should be collections of photographs, charts, and apparatus for the students' own handling. The only astronomical laboratory books known to the writer are those of the South Kensington School of Science in London, and of Miss Byrd and Professor Robert Willson. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many amateur astronomers are short of time. A full-time career usually takes up most waking hours, and often there simply isn’t time for leisurely observing. Fortunately, modern technologies such as computer-controlled telescopes, GPS, north-seeking and level detection, have made telescope set-up much quicker. Today’s imaging systems enable astronomers to take excellent astrophotographs without the hours-long exposures. Make Time for the Stars explains what to try on a tight schedule, and how to use today’s equipment to get the most astronomy out of the least time. This book showcases a wide array of quickly performed astronomical projects, including various novel or new approaches to observing. There are also practical tips for maximizing time at the telescope, extracting optimal performance, quick and efficient set-up, and easily carried out optical maintenance. Significantly, the book features detailed information on alternative imaging techniques with simple and less time-consuming efforts.
