Book The Last Days of Old Sharakhai

Download or read book The Last Days of Old Sharakhai written by Bradley P. Beaulieu and published by Quillings Literary. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Days of Old Sharakhai is a Shattered Sands novella set near the end of A Desert Torn Asunder (Book 6 of The Song of the Shattered Sands) and answers the question: What happened to King Ihsan? King Ihsan, once thought invincible, is now a fugitive in the city he once ruled. Struck by the black mould, a deadly wasting disease, Ihsan knows his days of ruling Sharakhai are coming to an end. His goals are simpler now. He’s focused on his daughter Ransaneh and her prospects when he’s gone, and that means forging a lasting peace in the desert. When Ihsan’s grandsons try to convince him to return Sharakhai to its former, authoritarian rule, he’s left with a difficult choice. Siding with his grandsons and the city’s old guard could easily rekindle hostilities and lead to a resumption of the devastating war with the desert tribes, while a refusal would instantly turn him and Ransaneh into targets for revenge. With very few friends left, Ihsan allies himself with Shohreh, a legendary swordswoman who mere months ago would gladly have killed Ihsan with her bare hands. But Shohreh bore witness to the terrible war that just ended. The last thing she wants is a return of the bloodshed. What follows is a game of assassins, political intrigue, and desperate flights as Ihsan tries to stay ahead of his enemies and set Sharakhai on a path toward peace.

Book The Last Days of Old Beijing

Download or read book The Last Days of Old Beijing written by Michael Meyer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist Michael Meyer has spent his adult life in China, first in a small village as a Peace Corps volunteer, the last decade in Beijing--where he has witnessed the extraordinary transformation the country has experienced in that time. For the past two years he has been completely immersed in the ancient city, living on one of its famed hutong in a century-old courtyard home he shares with several families, teaching English at a local elementary school--while all around him "progress" closes in as the neighborhood is methodically destroyed to make way for high-rise buildings, shopping malls, and other symbols of modern, urban life. The city, he shows, has been demolished many times before; however, he writes, "the epitaph for Beijing will read: born 1280, died 2008...what emperors, warlords, Japanese invaders, and Communist planners couldn't eradicate, the market economy can." The Last Days of Old Beijing tells the story of this historic city from the inside out-through the eyes of those whose lives are in the balance: the Widow who takes care of Meyer; his students and fellow teachers, the first-ever description of what goes on in a Chinese public school; the local historian who rallies against the government. The tension of preservation vs. modernization--the question of what, in an ancient civilization, counts as heritage, and what happens when a billion people want to live the way Americans do--suffuse Meyer's story.

Book Last Days in Old Europe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Bassett
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2019-01-31
  • ISBN : 0241014875
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Last Days in Old Europe written by Richard Bassett and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final decade of the Cold War, through the eyes of a laconic and elegant observer In 1979 Richard Bassett set out on a series of adventures and encounters in central Europe which allowed him to savour the last embers of the cosmopolitan old Hapsburg lands and gave him a ringside seat at the fall of another ancien regime, that of communist rule. From Trieste to Prague and Vienna to Warsaw, fading aristocrats, charming gangsters, fractious diplomats and glamorous informants provided him with an unexpected counterpoint to the austerities of life along the Iron Curtain, first as a professional musician and then as a foreign correspondent. The book shows us familiar events and places from unusual vantage points: dilapidated mansions and boarding-houses, train carriages and cafes, where the game of espionage between east and west is often set. There are unexpected encounters with Shirley Temple, Fitzroy Maclean, Lech Walesa and the last Empress of Austria. Bassett finds himself at the funeral of King Nicola of Montenegro in Cetinje, plays bridge with the last man alive to have been decorated by the Austrian Emperor Franz-Josef and watches the KGB representative in Prague bestowing the last rites on the Soviet empire in Europe. Music and painting, architecture and landscape, food and wine, friendship and history run through the book. The author is lucky, observant and leans romantically towards the values of an older age. He brilliantly conjures the time, the people he meets, and Mitteleuropa in one of the pivotal decades of its history.

Book excerpt: Over thirty years after its original publication, former Yellowstone National Park archivist Paul Schullery's collection of travelers' accounts of their visits to the first national park still resonates with the tremendous impact the Park has had--and continues to have--as a wilderness and recreation destination. From John Muir's exultation of the beauty of "Wonderland" to Rudyard Kipling's hilarious invective of the American tourist, Old Yellowstone Days includes selections which form the best picture of what Yellowstone must have been like before the intrusion of the automobile. Updated with a new introduction by Schullery, new illustrations, and a new foreword by Yellowstone National Park Historian Lee Whittlesey, this volume, which takes its title from an article by Owen Wister, also includes the impressions of William O. Owen, Charles Dudley Warner, Theodore Roosevelt, John Burroughs, Mrs. George Cowan, George Anderson, Emerson Hough, and Frederic Remington.
