Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days Near Rome, Vol. 1 of 2 Earnestly apologize to my readers for their imper fections. The ground, in many instances, had been almost untrodden several of the places described are difficult of access, and have never before been visited by foreigners; and, in most cases, published descrip tions either do not exist at all already, or are so inaccurate and untrustworthy as to be only mis guiding. A great field for discovery still remains, even within a day's journey of Rome; and if, in opening the way to others, I lead them to enjoy half the pleasure I have received from my own researches, I shall be more than rewarded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days Near Rome, Vol. 2 of 2 N a beautiful April morning we reached Frosinone by rail from Rome. The country was in its freshest, bright est green. At the station we found plenty of carriages waiting, and were soon leaving the town of Frosinone behind on its high isolated hill, and advancing fast into the mountains, through a rich corn-clad country. On the left, the most conspicuous feature was always Fumone, a knot of castellated buildings and cypresses on a lofty conical hill, where, in a prison, which none who look upon it can help feeling un utterably desolate, the dethroned Coelestine, who had been dragged to the papal throne from his hermitage in the Abruzzi, was forced by his successor Boniface VIII., at the age of 81, to spend the last ten months of his life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Days of Pompeii, Vol. 1 of 2 Yet the enterprise, though arduous, seemed to me worth attempting; and in the time and the scene I have chosen, much may be found to arouse the curiosity of the reader, and enlist his interest in the descriptions of the author. It was the first century of our religion; it was the most civilised period of Rome; the conduct of the story lies amidst places whose relics we yet trace; the catastrophe is among the most awful which the tragedies of Ancient History present to our survey. Book A History of Rome From the Earliest Times to the Establishment of the Empire Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Rome From the Earliest Times to the Establishment of the Empire Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry George Liddell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Rome From the Earliest Times to the Establishment of the Empire, Vol. 1 of 2 Tms work was begun some years ago, chiefly for the purpose of imparting to the Upper Forms in Schools some knowledge of the altered aspect which Roman History has assumed. It was laid aside, mainly, because notices appeared of several works written with a similar purpose; and was resumed in accordance with the opinion of friends who had a good right to form a judgment upon the matter. It has imperceptibly assumed larger dimensions, and the character of the book is considerably changed from that which it was originally intended to bear. A History of Rome, suited to the wants of general readers of the present day, does not in fact exist, and certainly is much wanted: whether this work will in any way supply the want is for others to say. The task has been executed under some disadvantages. My days were for the most part fully occupied; and what time I had to spare was liable to be broken in upon in many ways. When I came to revise the whole for the Press, I found the effects of this interrupted labour in various errors and repetitions and I cannot but fear that much of this original taint may still be detected. But I hope, after all deductions, that I may have put into the Reader's hand a book in some measure free from the reproach cast by a great living writer upon all compendious Histories, -namely, that they are Histories in which nothing of History remains except the Proper Names. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stella, Vol. 1 of 2 Not long ago you and I were recalling the happy days of my first sojourn at Rome - with my dear lost husband and yourself. Such reminiscences assure me beforehand of the interest you will feel in a work of fiction like mine, the scene of which is laid in and near the Papal Rome of 1845. How different from the Rome of to day - the mistress of an Italian kingdom! Allow me therefore to dedicate this book to you, in the hope, that it will sometimes remind you of happy days in the past, which we enjoyed together with many dear friends.
