Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quirky, timely, and disturbingly beautiful how-to taxidermy guide, emphasizing ethical sourcing and personal expression Whether inspiration came from an exhibition at an edgy art gallery, a visit to the Natural History Museum, or the sight of your crazy uncle’s jackalope, more and more people are opening up to the fun and wonder of taxidermy. A mix of art, science, and a touch of alchemy, taxidermy lets you engage with the natural world in ways most other people don’t. In Stuffed Animals, Divya Anantharaman and Katie Innamorato demystify the practice, shatter the gross stereotypes, and make taxidermy accessible to anyone, anywhere. Committed to ethical and sustainable sourcing, Anantharaman and Innamorato are part of the vanguard of young taxidermists who bring a sense of fun and experimentation to this old-school hobby. In their sold-out classes in Brooklyn, they teach hundreds of taxidermy novices how to create mantle-worthy pieces out of small birds and mammals. Both a helpful how-to manual and a strangely captivating gift book, Stuffed Animals is the definitive guide to a growing movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Commissario Ricciardi historical mystery—following Everyone in Their Place—is “a superb novel for fans of Italian noir” (Library Journal, starred review). Commissario Ricciardi has visions. He sees and hears the final moments in the lives of those who have suffered violent deaths. It may be a talent or it may be a curse, but it has helped him become one of the most successful homicide detectives in the Naples police force. It’s a rainy autumn in 1930s Naples as its inhabitants celebrate the week of the dead. Ricciardi’s instincts tell him that the death of a street urchin is actually murder, but investigating the homicide is not going to be easy. The authorities want to avoid any sign that things are not as they ought to be in Naples, for they are preparing for the state visit of Benito Mussolini. Ricciardi will have to conduct his investigation hidden from the eyes of his superiors. What’s worse, his sixth sense is no help to him this time; the scene of the crime is silent, still, not a word or a sign, or even a scream from the dead. Has his unwelcome gift finally faded? Or is something more sinister at work? “De Giovanni’s slashing wit cuts deeply into his cameo portraits of the high and mighty, even as his elegant style ennobles the wretched lives he views with such compassion.” —The New York Times Book Review “De Giovanni is a masterful plotter and sub-plotter; it’s a joy to ease into his complete command of his craft . . . These are murder mysteries raised to a brilliant level.” —Open Letters Monthly

Book A Transnational History of the Australian Animal Movement 1970 2015

Download or read book A Transnational History of the Australian Animal Movement 1970 2015 written by Gonzalo Villanueva and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first transnational historical study of the creation, contention and consequences of the Australian animal movement. Largely inspired by Peter Singer and his 1975 book Animal Liberation, a new wave of animal activism emerged in Australia and across the world. In an effort to draw public and media attention to the plight of animals, such as the rearing of pigs and poultry in factory farms and the export of live animals to the Middle East and South East Asia, Australian activists were often innovative and provocative in how they made their claims. Through lobbying, disruptive methods, and vegan activism, the animal movement consistently contested the politics and culture of how animals were used and exploited. Australians not only observed and learnt from people and events overseas, but also played significant international roles. This book examines the complex and conflicting consequences of the animal movement for Australian politics, as well as its influence on broader social change.

Download or read book How Animals Grieve written by Barbara J. King and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A touching and provocative exploration of the latest research on animal minds and animal emotions” from the renowned anthropologist and author (The Washington Post). Scientists have long cautioned against anthropomorphizing animals, arguing that it limits our ability to truly comprehend the lives of other creatures. Recently, however, things have begun to shift in the other direction, and anthropologist Barbara J. King is at the forefront of that movement, arguing strenuously that we can—and should—attend to animal emotions. With How Animals Grieve, she draws our attention to the specific case of grief, and relates story after story—from fieldsites, farms, homes, and more—of animals mourning lost companions, mates, or friends. King tells of elephants surrounding their matriarch as she weakens and dies, and, in the following days, attending to her corpse as if holding a vigil. A housecat loses her sister, from whom she’s never before been parted, and spends weeks pacing the apartment, wailing plaintively. A baboon loses her daughter to a predator and sinks into grief. In each case, King uses her anthropological training to interpret and try to explain what we see—to help us understand this animal grief properly, as something neither the same as nor wholly different from the human experience of loss. The resulting book is both daring and down-to-earth, strikingly ambitious even as it’s careful to acknowledge the limits of our understanding. Through the moving stories she chronicles and analyzes so beautifully, King brings us closer to the animals with whom we share a planet, and helps us see our own experiences, attachments, and emotions as part of a larger web of life, death, love, and loss.

Book excerpt: For many people, the third book of the Bible—Leviticus—is often the place where their yearly Bible reading plan gets interrupted as they look for more familiar material. What they need is a map, sufficiently scaled to offer an aerial overview of the book’s topography, yet detailed enough to provide a path for walking through the book’s terrain. This commentary puts such a map in your hands. It moves from general principles to specific requirements and guides the Bible reader through the details about Israel’s priesthood and Israel as the people of Yahweh. But any serious Bible reader, who by definition reads the Bible with an appetite, will want to feed on Jesus Christ in Leviticus, and this volume will satisfy that need abundantly—all the sacrifices, all the protocols, all the sacred leaders point to Jesus Christ and reach their fulfillment in him. It’s all about Jesus!

Book Mourning Animals

    Book Details:
  • Author : Margo de Mello
  • Publisher : MSU Press
  • Release : 2016-08-01
  • ISBN : 1628952717
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book Mourning Animals written by Margo de Mello and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live more intimately with nonhuman animals than ever before in history. The change in the way we cohabitate with animals can be seen in the way we treat them when they die. There is an almost infinite variety of ways to help us cope with the loss of our nonhuman friends—from burial, cremation, and taxidermy; to wearing or displaying the remains (ashes, fur, or other parts) of our deceased animals in jewelry, tattoos, or other artwork; to counselors who specialize in helping people mourn pets; to classes for veterinarians; to tips to help the surviving animals who are grieving their animal friends; to pet psychics and memorial websites. But the reality is that these practices, and related beliefs about animal souls or animal afterlife, generally only extend, with very few exceptions, to certain kinds of animals—pets. Most animals, in most cultures, are not mourned, and the question of an animal afterlife is not contemplated at all. Mourning Animals investigates how we mourn animal deaths, which animals are grievable, and what the implications are for all animals.
