Book Dealing with Privilege

Download or read book Dealing with Privilege written by David Crawford and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with Privilege: Cannabis, Cocaine, and the Economic Foundations of Suburban Drug Culture focuses on the careers of nine successfully retired drug dealers, offering a contrast to sociological, criminological, and other depictions of drug dealing as a realm of the desperate, dangerous, and poor. David Crawford tells the great untold story of drug dealing in America, where white, middle-class dealers are unlikely to suffer the enforcement of drug laws. Contrary to media portrayals, Crawford argues that suburban drug sales are not oriented around money making but friendship and fun. Using economic anthropology, classic sociology, and neuroscience to analyze the life trajectories of these dealers, Crawford touches on issues of crime, race, culture, aging, gender, privilege, illegal drugs, and the limits of conventional economics as a framework to understand economic behavior.

Book Moroccan Households in the World Economy

Download or read book Moroccan Households in the World Economy written by David Crawford and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, far from the hustle and noise of urban centers, lies a village made of mud and rock, barely discernible from the surrounding landscape. Yet a closer look reveals a carefully planned community of homes nestled above the trees, where rock slides are least frequent, and steep terraces of barley fields situated just above spring flood level. The Berber-speaking Muslims who live and farm on these precipitous mountainsides work together at the arduous task of irrigating the fields during the dry season, continuing a long tradition of managing land, labor, and other essential resources collectively. In Moroccan Households in the World Economy, David Crawford provides a detailed study of the rhythms of highland Berber life, from the daily routines of making a living in such a demanding environment to the relationships between individuals, the community, and the national economy. Demonstrating a remarkably complete understanding of every household and person in the village, Crawford traces the intricacies of cooperation between households over time. Employing a calculus known as "arranging the bones," villagers attempt to balance inequality over the long term by accounting for fluctuations in the needs and capacities of each person, household, and family at different stages in its history. Tradition dictates that children "owe" labor to their parents and grandparents as long as they live, and fathers decide when and where the children in their household work. Some may be asked to work for distant religious lodges or urban relatives they haven't met because of a promise made by long-dead ancestors. Others must migrate to cities to work as wage laborers and send their earnings home to support their rural households. While men and women leave their community to work, Morocco and the wider world come to the village in the form of administrators, development agents, and those representing commercial interests, all with their own agendas and senses of time. Integrating a classic village-level study that nevertheless engages with the realities of contemporary migration, Crawford succinctly summarizes common perceptions and misperceptions about the community while providing a salient critique of the global expansion of capital. In this beautifully observed ethnography, Crawford challenges assumptions about how Western economic processes transfer to other contexts and pulls the reader into an exotic world of smoke-filled kitchens, dirt-floored rooms, and communal rooftop meals -- a world every bit as fascinating as it is instructive.

Book excerpt: Wilbert Smith directed Project Magnet, the Canadian government's official investigation into UFOs. In a declassified memo dated 21 November 1950, Smith writes:"I made discreet enquires through the Canadian Embassy staff in Washington who were able to obtain for me the following information:a. The matter is the most highly classified subject in the United States Government, rating higher even than the H-bomb.b. Flying saucers exist."Researcher Grant Cameron studied Smith for two decades. In 2003, Cameron released "The Wilbert Smith Archives" on CD-ROM (http://presidentialUFO.com). The archives include nearly 1000 pages of scanned documents. "38 Messages from Space" is a remix of selected documents from Cameron's archives. While they have been retyped to improve legibility, an effort has been made to maintain the aesthetics of the originals. The documents are supplemented with my own illustrations.

Book The Garlic Papers

Download or read book The Garlic Papers written by Stanley Crawford and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of Stanley Crawford's first book on farming, A Garlic Testament, can look forward to an update on his farming practices and reflections on the natural world in THE GARLIC PAPERS: A Small Garlic Farm in the Age of Global Vampires . In the fall of 2014, Crawford questioned the U.S. Department of Commerce's granting of an exemption of duties to the largest importer of Chinese garlic, setting off a massive legal battle in which his small farm has been pitted against the Chinese importer and its several international law firms. An account of this David and Goliath battle, now in its fifth year, makes up the core of the book, in which Crawford describes his personal and farming life under a cloud of lawsuits and administrative skirmishes. The unusual case was of sufficient interest that it became the subject of a Netflix documentary, Garlic Breath," in the six-part series, "Rotten," released in 2018."
