Book excerpt: The true story of the tumultuous and too-short life of the film star known as “the English Marilyn Monroe.” The story of Diana Dors is one of fame, glamour, and intrigue. From the moment she came into the world, her life was full of drama. She began her acting career in the shadow of the Second World War, entering the film world as a vulnerable young teenager and negotiating the difficult British studio system of the 1940s and ’50s. Yet she battled against the odds to become one of the most iconic British actors of the twentieth century. This book follows her remarkable story, from childhood in suburban Swindon to acting success as a teenager and finding fame as the “the English Marilyn Monroe.” Many remember her as an outspoken and sometimes controversial figure, grabbing headlines for her personal life as often as for her film roles. For Diana, image seemed to be everything, but there was more to her than the blonde-bombshell reputation suggested. A talented actor, she worked on numerous film and television projects, building a career that spanned decades. Set against the backdrop of the changing social landscape of twentieth century Britain, this book charts the ups and downs of her professional adventures and her tumultuous private life, to build a fascinating picture of a unique screen icon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitler Gives The Order! The first thing Dave Dawson saw when he woke up was the combination clock and calendar on the little table beside his bed. He stared at it sleepy eyed and tried to remember why he had put it where he would see it the very first thing when he opened his eyes. He knew there was some reason, an important one, but for the life of him he couldn't remember. He struggled with the problem for a moment or two and then sat up in bed and glanced about the room. For one brief second the unfamiliar sight startled him. Then he realized where he was and grinned broadly. Sure enough! This was his room in the Hotel de Ney in Paris, France. This was just a little part of the wonderful dream that had really come true!
Download or read book Dave Dawson at Dunkirk written by R Sidney Bowen and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bowen turned to writing in 1930, using his prestige as editor-in-chief of Aviation Magazine to write Flying From The Ground Up, a non-fiction work on how to fly an airplane. He began freelancing for pulp magazines. In 1934, he started his own pulp magazine, Dusty Ayres And His Battle Birds, for Popular Publications. Twelve issues were released, the first eleven published monthly from July 1934 through July 1935, with most issues released monthly. Bowen continued writing for mystery, adventure, sports, and aviation pulp magazines through the 1950s. After the invasion of Poland by Germany in 1939 sparked World War II, Crown Publishers called Bowen, asking for an adventure story based on the war. The Dave Dawson series, also known as the War Adventure series, was the result. Bowen got to work immediately, and the first book, Dave Dawson At Dunkirk, was published in 1941. A total of 15 volumes were released between 1941 and 1946.

Download or read book Dominion written by C.J. Sansom and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.J. Sansom rewrites history in a thrilling novel that dares to imagine Britain under the thumb of Nazi Germany. 1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany. The global economy strains against the weight of the long German war against Russia still raging in the east. The British people find themselves under increasingly authoritarian rule -- the press, radio, and television tightly controlled, the British Jews facing ever greater constraints. But Churchill's Resistance soldiers on. As defiance grows, whispers circulate of a secret that could forever alter the balance of the global struggle. The keeper of that secret? Scientist Frank Muncaster, who languishes in a Birmingham mental hospital. Civil Servant David Fitzgerald, a spy for the Resistance and University friend of Frank's, is given the mission to rescue Frank and get him out of the country. Hard on his heels is Gestapo agent Gunther Hoth, a brilliant, implacable hunter of men, who soon has Frank and David's innocent wife, Sarah, directly in his sights. C.J. Sansom's literary thriller Winter in Madrid earned Sansom comparisons to Graham Greene, Sebastian Faulks, and Ernest Hemingway. Now, in his first alternative history epic, Sansom doesn't just recreate the past -- he reinvents it. In a spellbinding tale of suspense, oppression and poignant love, Dominion dares to explore how, in moments of crisis, history can turn on the decisions of a few brave men and women -- the secrets they choose to keep and the bonds they share.
