Book Daughters of the Silver Lode

Download or read book Daughters of the Silver Lode written by Fiona Snow and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia City is not the average nineteenth-century mining town. This bustling city boasts running water, gas lights, a thriving opera, and is home to a host of remarkable residents. Nothing about Virginia City is ordinary, including the children who come of age in her extraordinary atmosphere. Two of these daughters are Lisa Lomerson and Maura Sullivan. Lisa, daughter of a Swedish grocer and English schoolteacher, is dreamy and idealistic. Maura, daughter of a rich Irish mine owner, is a woman who knows her own mind and will not allow anyone or anything to stand in the way of her desires. But strength and independence of spirit are not always conducive to happiness. Lisa falls in love with a young Chinese man, and prejudice against the young couple erupts into violence. Maura survives an abusive marriage to seek fulfillment in unacceptable liaisons, stock speculation, and the silver mining that dominates Virginia City life. As the silver strike drops from boom to bust, both women face what appear to be impossible decisions in this engrossing tale of courage and passion.

Book excerpt: Devoted to his craft--sometimes to the detriment of his reputation--cinematographer John Alton (1901-1996) was sought after by such directors as Vincente Minnelli, Richard Brooks and Anthony Mann but was disdained by others of comparable talent. An auteur in the truest sense, Alton established a landmark body of work described by Variety film critic Todd McCarthy as "The essence, and ultimate example, of film noir ... logically created by a cinematographer, not a director." This collection of new essays by filmmakers and film scholars explores the central role Alton's distinctive style of "painting with light" played in formulating the aesthetics of noir, as well as his contributions to other genres.

Book Film Criticism the Cold War and the Blacklist

Download or read book Film Criticism the Cold War and the Blacklist written by Jeff Smith and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film Criticism, the Cold War, and the Blacklist examines the long-term reception of several key American films released during the postwar period, focusing on the two main critical lenses used in the interpretation of these films: propaganda and allegory. Produced in response to the hearings held by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) that resulted in the Hollywood blacklist, these films’ ideological message and rhetorical effectiveness was often muddled by the inherent difficulties in dramatizing villains defined by their thoughts and belief systems rather than their actions. Whereas anti-Communist propaganda films offered explicit political exhortation, allegory was the preferred vehicle for veiled or hidden political comment in many police procedurals, historical films, Westerns, and science fiction films. Jeff Smith examines the way that particular heuristics, such as the mental availability of exemplars and the effects of framing, have encouraged critics to match filmic elements to contemporaneous historical events, persons, and policies. In charting the development of these particular readings, Film Criticism, the Cold War, and the Blacklist features case studies of many canonical Cold War titles, including The Red Menace, On the Waterfront, The Robe, High Noon, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Book Allan Dwan and the Rise and Decline of the Hollywood Studios

Download or read book Allan Dwan and the Rise and Decline of the Hollywood Studios written by Frederic Lombardi and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It could be said that the career of Canadian-born film director Allan Dwan (1885-1981) began at the dawn of the American motion picture industry. Originally a scriptwriter, Dwan became a director purely by accident. Even so, his creativity and problem-solving skills propelled him to the top of his profession. He achieved success with numerous silent film performers, most spectacularly with Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Gloria Swanson, and later with such legendary stars as Shirley Temple and John Wayne. Though his star waned in the sound era, Dwan managed to survive through pluck and ingenuity. Considering himself better off without the fame he enjoyed during the silent era, he went on to do some of his best work for second-echelon studios (notably Republic Pictures' Sands of Iwo Jima) and such independent producers as Edward Small. Along the way, Dwan also found personal happiness in an unconventional manner. Rich in detail with two columns of text in each of its nearly 400 pages, and with more than 150 photographs, this book presents a thorough examination of Allan Dwan and separates myth from truth in his life and films.
