These to-scale facsimile reproductions, one hundred ninety-eight in total, provide ample paleographical material that will help in dating other manuscripts. The author presents the chronological evidence and extensively interprets the prosopographical and linguistic elements of the manuscripts. Book The Gattilusio Lordships and the Aegean World 1355 1462

Download or read book The Gattilusio Lordships and the Aegean World 1355 1462 written by Christopher Wright and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Gattilusio Lordships and the Aegean World 1355-1462, Christopher Wright offers a window into the culturally and politically diverse late medieval Aegean. The overlapping influences of the contrasting networks of power at work in the region are explored through the history of one of many small and distinctive political units that flourished in this fragmented environment, the lordships of the Gattilusio family, centred on Lesbos. Though Genoese in origin, they owed their position to Byzantine authority. Though active in crusading, they cultivated congenial relations with the Ottomans. Though Catholic, they afforded exceptional freedom to the Orthodox Church. Their regime is shown to represent both a unique fusion of influences and a revealing microcosm of its times.

Book Translation Activity in Late Byzantine World

Download or read book Translation Activity in Late Byzantine World written by Panagiotis Athanasopoulos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late Byzantine period (1261-1453), a significant number of texts were translated from Latin, but also from Arabic and other languages, into Greek. Most of them are still unedited or available in editions that do not meet the modern academic criteria. Nowadays, these translations are attracting scholarly attention, as it is widely recognized that, besides their philological importance per se, they can shed light on the cultural interactions between late Byzantines and their neighbours or predecessors. To address this desideratum, this volume focuses on the cultural context, the translators and the texts produced during the Palaeologan era, extending as well till the end of 15th c. in ex-Byzantine territories. By shedding light on the translation activity of late Byzantine scholars, this volume aims at revealing the cultural aspect of late Byzantine openness to its neighbours.

Book A Textual Study of Family 1 in the Gospel of John

Download or read book A Textual Study of Family 1 in the Gospel of John written by Alison Welsby and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textual study of the Gospel of John in seventeen Greek manuscripts offers a fresh investigation into the textual group known as Family 1. Since Kirsopp Lake’s 1902 study, Codex 1 of the Gospels and its Allies, Family 1 has been considered an important textual witness by all major critical editions of the the New Testament; however, with the exception of a recent study of Matthew (Amy Anderson, The Textual Tradition of the Gospels: Family 1 in Matthew), little further research has been conducted into the family’s text. By analysis of a full collation of John, this study examines manuscripts: Gregory-Aland 1, 22, 118, 131, 205abs, 205, 209, 565, 872, 884, 1192, 1210, 1278, 1582, 2193, 2372, and 2713. The study has confirmed the place of codices 1 and 1582 as core members of Family 1, but has demonstrated the existence of a new core subgroup, represented by codices 565, 884 and 2193, that rivals the textual witness of 1 and 1582. The discovery of this subgroup has broadened the textual contours of Family 1, leading to many new readings, both text and marginal, that should be considered Family 1 readings. The reconstructed Family 1 text with critical apparatus is based on the witness of this wider textual group and is offered as a replacement to Lake’s 1902 text of John.

Book Receptions of Antiquity Constructions of Gender in European Art 1300 1600

Download or read book Receptions of Antiquity Constructions of Gender in European Art 1300 1600 written by Marice Rose and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Receptions of Antiquity, Constructions of Gender in European Art, 1300-1600 presents scholarship in classical reception at its nexus with art history and gender studies. It considers the ways that artists, patrons, collectors, and viewers in late medieval and early modern Europe used ancient Greek and Roman art, texts, myths, and history to interact with and shape notions of gender. The essays examine Giotto's Arena Chapel frescoes, Michelangelo's Medici Chapel personifications, Giulio Romano's decoration of the Palazzo del Te, and other famous and lesser-known sculptures, paintings, engravings, book illustrations, and domestic objects as well as displays of ancient art. Visual responses to antiquity in this era, the volume demonstrates, bore a complex and significant relationship to the construction of, and challenges to, contemporary gender norms.
