Book Date labelling in the Nordic countries

Download or read book Date labelling in the Nordic countries written by Hanne Møller and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report addresses how date labels are determined and applied with focus on reducing food waste in the Nordic countries. This was assessed through a survey and selected interviews with Nordic food manufacturers about their considerations when deciding the date label. Another objective has been to distinguish if there are differences in the way food safety authorities interpret legislation. The results from the study indicate that there are differences between the countries in terms of both the practice of guidelines and the shelf life of food. The report is part of the Nordic Prime Ministers’ overall green growth initiative: “The Nordic Region – leading in green growth” – read more in the web magazine “Green Growth the Nordic Way” at www.nordicway.org or at www.norden.org/greengrowth

This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the project has been to identify how date labelling legislation on food is practised in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden and how the durability can be affected in the food supply chain. The project recommends enhanced guidance for manufacturers, retailers and consumers. When prolonging the durability of the product, the retail waste decreased significantly. The results show that the type of packaging gas and storage temperature is of great importance for the durability of food products. Consumer studies reveal a need for guidance on how long products may be eaten after opening of the package. The individual consumer needs clearer and more easily accessible information on different labelling, storage temperature and durability of products.

Book Food waste and Date labelling

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Date labelling has been part of a Nordic project on reducing food waste. The project was part of the Nordic Prime Ministers’ green growth initiative, contributing to circular economy work. Focus has been on how to improve the use and understanding of date labelling of foods in order to reduce food waste in the Nordic countries without challenging food safety. This publication is based on the project report Food waste and date labelling: Issues affecting the durability. Mappings undertaken has led to recommendations on restricted use of Use by- labelling, on harmonization for lower storage temperatures for perishable products, on oxygen free packaging for fresh meat and on the need for guidance on date labels to reach out better among stakeholders and consumers. A Nordic standpoint is that date labelling of eggs should be regulated like any other food.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the final results of a quantitative study on Nordic consumers' attitudes to food labelling. The study was conducted in the five Nordic countries Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. More than 1,000 interviews were conducted in each country. The results of this survey show that information about ingredients, nutritional contents, "best-before-date", and country of origin must be printed clearly on the food package. This is the "top-of-mind" information Nordic consumers want to see on food labels to be able to make a conscious choice when buying food. Furthermore, a majority of Nordic consumers welcome measures to help consumers to take in information and increase the legibility of food packages. There is strong support for the introduction of a minimum print size and for obligatory labelling information always being laid out in the same format on the package. The purpose of the study was to collect up to date information and knowledge on the needs and attitudes of Nordic consumers regarding food labelling. The study aims to contribute to the preparation for the upcoming European Union revision of the food labelling rules.

This book was released on 2014-07-04 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2011, the Nordic Prime Ministers commissioned the Nordic Council of Ministers to launch a new cross sectoral initiative for green growth. The Prime Ministers’ commission was based on the report, The Nordic Region – leading in green growth, prepared by a Nordic working group for green growth. The Nordic countries should together utilise their position in terms of energy efficiency, development of sustainable energy, environmental awareness, innovation and research initiatives, and high international goals in the environmental and climate area. The aim is to work in areas in which the Nordic countries can build on and develop existing positions of strength, improve co-ordination between the Nordic countries, and take the lead in relation to the development in the European Union (EU). The Councils of Ministers are making tangible the working group’s eight recommendations for project activities, which have been granted a total of DKK 45 million in the period 2012–2014. This status report presents the most important advances in each project. More information on the initiative is also available on the home page of the Council of Ministers, www.norden.org/greengrowth.

Book Barriers for utilisation of biowaste

Download or read book Barriers for utilisation of biowaste written by Mikael Hallstrøm Eriksen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increased focus on ensuring optimal use of the resources of the planet. However experience shows that legislation can hinder the use of the resources from waste. This report examines the unintended consequences that legislation, enforcement and other formal institutions can have on utilization of biowaste as a resource. The project consists of three main elements: 1) Desk research 2) Qualitative phone interviews with relevant actors in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. 3) Solution dialogues with authorities. The barriers to better utilisation of biowaste are diffuse, and the solutions complex. A mixture of changes in regulation, better cooperation and coordination between regulative bodies, and better guidance and information sharing between national- and municipal authorities and the business community would together reduce the barriers for utilisation of biowaste.

Book Food Redistribution in the Nordic Region

Download or read book Food Redistribution in the Nordic Region written by Ole Jørgen Hanssen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report has a focus on waste prevention through redistribution of food to low-income people via charity organisations. Food redistribution can go via national food banks and via direct redistribution, often on a local level. Food banks redistributed about 1,5 mill meals in 2013, and local charity organisations probably 2–3 times more. The regulatory framework for food redistribution is described and discussed. The demand of and potential for redistribution is probably much higher than at present, and the reports points out strategies and measures for how food banks can contribute to secure and further develop. The report is part of the Nordic Prime Ministers’ overall green growth initiative: “The Nordic Region – leading in green growth” – read more in the web magazine “Green Growth the Nordic Way.”
