Book Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments

Download or read book Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments written by Kian-Lee Tan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our increasingly mobile world the ability to access information on demand at any time and place can satisfy people's information needs as well as confer on them a competitive advantage. The emergence of battery-operated, low-cost and portable computers such as palmtops and PDAs, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless networks, have made possible the potential for ubiquitous computing. Through the wireless networks, portable equipments will become an integrated part of existing distributed computing environments, and mobile users can have access to data stored at information servers located at the static portion of the network even while they are on the move. Traditionally, information is retrieved following a request-response model. However, this model is no longer adequate in a wireless computing environment. First, the wireless channel is unreliable and the bandwidth is low compared to the wired counterpart. Second, the environment is essentially asymmetric with a large number of mobile users accessing a small number of servers. Third, battery-operated portable devices can typically operate only for a short time because of the short battery lifespan. Thus, clients are expected to be disconnected most of the time. To overcome these limitations, there has been a proliferation of research efforts on designing data delivery mechanisms to support wireless computing more effectively. Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments focuses on such mechanisms. The purpose is to provide a thorough and comprehensive review of recent advances on energy-efficient data delivery protocols, efficient wireless channel bandwidth utilization, reliable broadcasting and cache invalidation strategies for clients with long disconnection time. Besides surveying existing methods, this book also compares and evaluates some of the more promising schemes.

Book Data Management for Mobile Computing

Download or read book Data Management for Mobile Computing written by Evaggelia Pitoura and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universal access and management of information has been one of the driving forces in the evolution of computer technology. Central computing gave the ability to perform large and complex computations and advanced information manipulation. Advances in networking connected computers together and led to distributed computing. Web technology and the Internet went even further to provide hyper-linked information access and global computing. However, restricting access stations to physical locations limits the boundary of the vision. The real global network can be achieved only via the ability to compute and access information from anywhere and anytime. This is the fundamental wish that motivates mobile computing. This evolution is the cumulative result of both hardware and software advances at various levels motivated by tangible application needs. Infrastructure research on communications and networking is essential for realizing wireless systems. Equally important is the design and implementation of data management applications for these systems, a task directly affected by the characteristics of the wireless medium and the resulting mobility of data resources and computation. Although a relatively new area, mobile data management has provoked a proliferation of research efforts motivated both by a great market potential and by many challenging research problems. The focus of Data Management for Mobile Computing is on the impact of mobile computing on data management beyond the networking level. The purpose is to provide a thorough and cohesive overview of recent advances in wireless and mobile data management. The book is written with a critical attitude. This volume probes the new issues introduced by wireless and mobile access to data and their conceptual and practical consequences. Data Management for Mobile Computing provides a single source for researchers and practitioners who want to keep abreast of the latest innovations in the field. It can also serve as a textbook for an advanced course on mobile computing or as a companion text for a variety of courses including courses on distributed systems, database management, transaction management, operating or file systems, information retrieval or dissemination, and web computing.

Book Replicated Data Management for Mobile Computing

Download or read book Replicated Data Management for Mobile Computing written by Terry Douglas and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2008-06-08 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing data in a mobile computing environment invariably involves caching or replication. In many cases, a mobile device has access only to data that is stored locally, and much of that data arrives via replication from other devices, PCs, and services. Given portable devices with limited resources, weak or intermittent connectivity, and security vulnerabilities, data replication serves to increase availability, reduce communication costs, foster sharing, and enhance survivability of critical information. Mobile systems have employed a variety of distributed architectures from client–server caching to peer-to-peer replication. Such systems generally provide weak consistency models in which read and update operations can be performed at any replica without coordination with other devices. The design of a replication protocol then centers on issues of how to record, propagate, order, and filter updates. Some protocols utilize operation logs, whereas others replicate state. Systems might provide best-effort delivery, using gossip protocols or multicast, or guarantee eventual consistency for arbitrary communication patterns, using recently developed pairwise, knowledge-driven protocols. Additionally, systems must detect and resolve the conflicts that arise from concurrent updates using techniques ranging from version vectors to read–write dependency checks. This lecture explores the choices faced in designing a replication protocol, with particular emphasis on meeting the needs of mobile applications. It presents the inherent trade-offs and implicit assumptions in alternative designs. The discussion is grounded by including case studies of research and commercial systems including Coda, Ficus, Bayou, Sybase’s iAnywhere, and Microsoft’s Sync Framework. Book Data in Your Space

Download or read book Data in Your Space written by Debopam Acharya and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation we explore various ways of disseminating data to users in the wireless and mobile environment. Wireless data dissemination is an economical and efficient way to make desired data available to a large number of mobile or static users. There are mainly two basic modes of data dissemination, push and pull. Most of the current schemes have followed these two basic modes of data dissemination. Our approach is drawn from the observation that either of these two modes alone is not able to address several problems of data dissemination. We argue that a hybrid form of data dissemination may be able to address a significant number of those issues. We use our hybrid mode of data dissemination to introduce a novel approach of disseminating location dependent data. Instead of using the traditional way of request/response type messaging, we broadcast certain location dependent data and show that this way of disseminating is efficient and convenient. Effectiveness of wireless data dissemination depends to a large extent on minimizing access latency. To address this, we have introduced an innovative method called data staging. We demonstrate through our research that access latency may be significantly reduced by using data staging. It is essential to organize data in the broadcast so that user gets the idea about the position of data and the time lag after which the data will be downloaded in the mobile unit. To address this we needed a suitable indexing scheme. Several works have introduced schemes for indexing data. We argue that none of them have particularly addressed the issues inherent to the location dependent data. Since we have proposed broadcasting location dependent data, a new scheme is essential to address all those issues. We discuss and address these issues in our location based indexing scheme. Finally, we create a Java based prototype of our research and implemented it in a real wireless network to evaluate its performance. The result proves that some of the location based data should be broadcasted to increase efficiency and convenience on part of the mobile user.
