Book Medieval Philosophy and the Transcendentals

Download or read book Medieval Philosophy and the Transcendentals written by Jan Aertsen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of Thomas Aquinas have so far lacked a comprehensive study of his doctrine of the transcendentals. This volume fills this lacuna, showing the fundamental character of the notions of being, one, true and good for his thought. The book inquires into the beginnings of the doctrine in the thirteenth century and explains the relation of the transcendental way of thought to Aquinas's conception of metaphysics. It analyzes "Being," "One," "True," "Good" and "Beautiful" individually and discusses their importance for the philosophical knowledge of God. Medieval Philosophy and the Transcendentals: The Case of Thomas Aquinas is intended as a contribution to the question "What is philosophy in the Middle Ages?". It argues that the doctrine of the transcendentals is essential for understanding medieval philosophy.

Book The Metaphysics of Transcendental Subjectivity

Download or read book The Metaphysics of Transcendental Subjectivity written by Joseph Claude Evans and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general topic of this book is the metaphysics of the subject in Kantian transcendental philosophy. A critical appreciation of Kant's achievements requires that we be able to view Kant's positions as transformations of pre-Kantian philosophy, and that we understand the ways in which contemporary philosophy changes the letter of Kantian thought in order to be true to its spirit in a new philosophical horizon. Descartes is important in two respects. One the one hand, he institutes a philosophical movement which can be said to culminate in Kant; on the other hand, Descartes is one of the major opponents against whom Kant argues in establishing his own position. In either case, the Cartesian cogito is a central concern. Wilfred Sellars restates and transforms Kantian positions in the context of contemporary philosophy after the "linguistic turn", using the Platonic metaphor that thought is similar to discourse.

Book Transzendentale Einheit

Download or read book Transzendentale Einheit written by Wouter Goris and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcendental unity is a figure of thought of the Latin Middle Ages, which is indebted to Avicenna’s renewal of metaphysics and which is wrongly attributed to Aristotle. A specific interpretation of the demonstrable attribute determines the metaphysical reflection on ‘the one’ and turns it into a transcendental attribute of being. Notwithstanding the variety of epistemic constellations, however, this metaphysical relationship of being and unity always turns out to be a fundamental state of affairs. Transcendental unity identifies as a problem constellation, the principles of which are still effective in the critique of scholastic metaphysics in classical German philosophy.

Book The Disintegration of Natural Law Theory

Download or read book The Disintegration of Natural Law Theory written by Pauline C. Westerman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Finnis's proposal to rehabilitate Aquinas's natural law theory as an appropriate foundation of legal and moral theory rests on the assumption that Aquinas's theory can be restored by eliminating the mistaken interpretations of subsequent natural law theorists. This book challenges that assumption. After a brief analysis of Aquinas, the theories of Suárez, Grotius, and Pufendorf are investigated. It is argued that their theories are no 'mistakes', but attempts at solving problems inherent in natural law theory. As these attempts all fail, tensions remain, and ultimately lead to the demise of the theory. Finally it is argued that Finnis, running into the same problems, cannot hope to restore Aquinas's theoretical edifice.

Book Islamic Thought in the Dialogue of Cultures

Download or read book Islamic Thought in the Dialogue of Cultures written by Hans Daiber and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic thought is the most beautiful result of a multicultural dialogue. Islamic culture became a bridge between antiquity, Iranian scholars, Syriac and Arabic Christians and the Latin Middle Ages. Its richness of ideas, its plurality of values can contribute to the requirements of modern plurality. The monograph aims at a historical and bibliographical survey of the qurʾānic and rational world-view of early Islam, of the period of translations from Greek into Syriac and Arabic, and of the impact of Islamic thought on the Latin Middle Ages. Critical reflexions of Muslim scholars stimulated new scientific ideas and make us aware of the contribution of Islam to humanity.

Book Das Transzendentale bei Ibn S n

Download or read book Das Transzendentale bei Ibn S n written by Tiana Koutzarova and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following al-Fārābī’s approach, Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037) undertakes a new foundation of the First Philosophy based on his own critical systematisation of the Aristotelian theory of science, yielding the result that metaphysics is only possible as a transcendental science, i.e. that not only the subject-matter of metaphysics and its properties but also the arguments by which the first principles of knowledge are defended must be transcendental. This book provides the first systematic reconstruction of Ibn Sīnā’s concept of metaphysics, and, given the considerable influence his achievement had on the Islamic tradition as well as on scholastic philosophers, it is relevant to the study of the history of metaphysics, Islamic theology (kalām), and Arabic philosophy.

Book Die Freiheit der Reflexion

Download or read book Die Freiheit der Reflexion written by Michael Städtler and published by Hegel-Forschungen. This book was released on 2003 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Science the Singular and the Question of Theology

Download or read book Science the Singular and the Question of Theology written by Richard A. Lee Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-01-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, the Singular, and the Question of Theology explores the role that the singular plays in the theories of science of Robert Grosseteste, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, Marsilius of Inghen, and Pierre d'Ailly. It pursues the question specifically in relation to the question of whether theology is a science. The work argues that the main issue in debates concerns whether theology is a science and how to provide a 'rational ground' for existing singulars. Science, the Singular, and the Question of Theology exposes how, on the eve of modernity, existing singulars were freed from the constraints of rational ground.
