Einige verschiedene Möglichkeiten werden nachfolgend dargestellt: Die BGF bezieht sich häufig auf einzelne Maßnahmen der Verhaltensmodifikation. Hier sind die klassischen Instrumente der Bewegungsförderung, Ernährung, Sucht- und Stressbewältigung im Vordergrund. Hierzu zählt zusätzlich eine zeitlich befristete Aktion wie die der Einrichtung von Gesundheitszirkeln. Neben der Verhaltensmodifikation werden auch Maßnahmen der Verhältnisprävention angewandt. Hier kommen hauptsächlich gesundheitsfördernde Verbesserungen der Arbeitsbedingungen zum tragen (z.B. Ergonomie und Gestaltung der Arbeitsplätze). Die dritte Art der Prävention ist die System- bzw. Organisationsprävention. Hier werden Aktionen gestaltet, die auf ein gesundes Betriebsklima abzielen wie teambildende Workshops und Mobbingprävention. Die Luxemburger Deklaration zur BGF in der Europäischen Union, die von allen Mitgliedsstaaten der EU und der Schweiz unterzeichnet wurde, definiert die Gesundheitsförderung folgendermaßen: „BGF umfasst alle gemeinsamen Maßnahmen von Arbeitgebern, Arbeitnehmern und Gesellschaft zur Verbesserung und Wohlbefinden am Arbeitsplatz.“
