Book excerpt: Current attitudes towards drug misuse in the media, government and even treatment centers often exaggerate the pharmacological power of drugs. Their coercive influence is widely believed to be so great that to experiment with a drug is tantamount to addiction. This book argues that such beliefs are largely inaccurate and harmful. Research shows that explanations for drug use vary according to circumstances. Drug users may explain that they have lost their willpower and capacity for personal decision-making, because this is the explanation expected of them, but most actually use drugs because they want to and because they see no good reason for giving them up. Addicted behavior is therefore a form of learned helplessness that encourages passivity and irresponsibility.

The more people who know about the world of drugs and drug addicts, the better—that is why the book is Education Fiction and not just a simple diary. Because the book is Education Fiction, the overall writing of the diary is on the academic and sometimes even scholarly side. Still, it is fiction and it has to be more academic and scholarly since its real purpose is to inform and educate and help drug users and addicts and also their families. The book is also for professionals.

Book Addiction God S Healing

Download or read book Addiction God S Healing written by Duly Noted and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was just your run-of-the-mill alcoholic who God saw fit to rescue! For close to forty years, I struggled with addiction, and as time went on, it always got worse quicker and got more intense after any period of clean time. It was not until this unprofessional writer put God like I never had him before in my life and also after a proven twelve-step program that I was able to get and stay soberone day at a time. I was bankrupt in all waysfinancially, emotionally, mentally (at times I couldnt remember my name), and almost spiritually. I turned a perfectly good life into a perfect messby choice. Why? I ended up at a few homeless shelters. Family and friends were asking (begging) me to get out of my hometown, Buffalo, New York, because I was going to die as the whole city turned into a people, places, and things place that people are warned about in recovery. Today I tell God, people at recovery meetings, family, and friends, I have the best life of anybody I know, and I believe it! God gets and deserves all the glory, all the honor, and all the praise that my family and friends give to me. God blessed me with one grandchild (daughter) and another one on the way. At recovery meetings, they say, Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. That is so true! According to Matthew 6:33, Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added onto you. Thank you! God bless you! Glenn

Book Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict

Download or read book Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict written by Laurie Viera Rigler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time-bending parallel tale to the national bestseller Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict In Laurie Viera Rigler's first novel, Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict, twenty-first-century Austen fan Courtney Stone found herself in Regency England occupying the body of one Jane Mansfield, with comic and romantic consequences. Now, in Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict, Jane Mansfield awakens in the urban madness of twenty-first-century L.A.—in Courtney's body. With no knowledge of Courtney's life, let alone her world—with its horseless carriages and shiny glass box in which tiny figures act out her favorite book, Pride and Prejudice—Jane is over her head. Especially when she falls for a handsome young gentleman. Can a girl from Regency England make sense of a world in which kissing and flirting and even the sexual act raise no matrimonial expectations?
