Book excerpt: The present "Literature Qf Java, Catalogue Raisonne Qf Javanese Manuscripts" is a publicatiQn of the Library Qf the University Qf Leiden. It is no. Juynboll's "Supplement Dp "den CatalQgus van de J avaansche en Madoereesche Handschriften der Leidsche "Universiteits-BibliQtheek" in two volumes. The second volume appeared in 1911. The differences in structure between the older catalogues and the present bDOk will be explained in the introduction to the second vQlume. The third volume, cDntaining illustrations, facsimiles Df manuscripts, maps and a general index Df names and subjects, is entirely new.

Book The Book of Cabol k

Download or read book The Book of Cabol k written by I. Yasadipura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scope of the Work The main purpose of this work is to give a critical edition of a Javanese text - the Serat Cabolek - together with an Introduction, an English trans lation of the text, and Notes. The present publication is a slighdy revised version of a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Australian National Univer sity in 1967. The Introduction to the text begins with a brief description of each of the extant MSS of the Serat Cabolek to be found in the Manuscript Sections of the Jakarta Museum Library and the Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia and in the Griental Manuscripts Section of the Leiden University Library. In addition, a description is given of a printed version of the Serat Cabolek. The eleven MSS and the printed text are compared with one another on the points of form, structure and content, in order to discover their mutual relationship. From this comparison it becomes clear that no matter how much these eleven MSS and the printed text of theSerat Cabolek may differ the one from the other, they all share a common core and all ultimately derive from a single source. The kernel of the Serat Cabolek in all probability comprised only the following sections: (1) the story dealing with the trial of Haji Mutamakin by the Kartasura tribunal; (2) the teaching of Dewa Ruci to Bhima; and (3) a commentary on Dewa Ruds counsel to Bhima.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICCEDI is an international seminar that is held every two years organized by the Law and Citizenship Department, Faculty of Social Science Universitas Negeri Malang. The activities aim to discuss the theoretical and practical citizenship education that becomes needed for democracy in Indonesia and other countries with a view to build academic networks by gathering academics from various research institutes and universities. Citizenship education is an urgent need for the nation in order to build a civilized democracy for several reasons. Citizenship education is important for those who are politically illiterate and do not know how to work the democracy of its institutions. Another problem is the increasing political apathy, indicated by the limited involvement of citizens in the political process. These conditions show how citizenship education becomes the means needed by a democratic country like Indonesia. The book addresses a number of important issues, such as law issues, philosophy of moral values, political government, socio-cultural and Pancasila, and civic education. Finally, it offers a conceptual framework for future democracy. This book will be of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners, governance, and other related stakeholders.

Book Traditions Redirecting Contemporary Indonesian Cultural Productions

Download or read book Traditions Redirecting Contemporary Indonesian Cultural Productions written by Jan van der Putten and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a conference held in October 2015 in connection with the Frankfurt Book Fair discussing developments that are considered important in contemporary Indonesian cultural productions. The first part of the book reflects on the traumatic experiences of the Indonesian nation caused by a failed coup on October 1, 1965. In more general theoretical terms, this topic connects to the field of memory studies, which, in recent decades, has made an academic comeback. The focus of the chapters in this section is how certain, often distressing, events are represented in narratives in a variety of media that are periodically renewed, changed, rehearsed, repeated, and performed, in order to become or stay part of the collective memory of a certain group of people. The second part of the book explores how forces of globalisation have impacted upon the local and, linguistically surprisingly, rather homogeneous cultural productions of Indonesia. The main strands of inquiry in this second section are topics of global trends in religion, responses to urban development, the impact of popular literary developments, and how traditions are revisited in order to come to terms with international cultural developments.

Book His Word is the Truth

Download or read book His Word is the Truth written by Jan van der Putten and published by Leiden University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A schemer of the lowest sort' who undermined the Dutch cause, or 'a smart and diligent native' who was particularly useful for Dutch officials? They held extreme and incompatible opinions about Haji Ibrahim (ca. 1810 - ca. 1875), a jack-of-all-trades who, to the best of his abilities, tried to serve the various groups in power in Riau in the nineteenth century. On of his patrons was Hermann von de Wall, who had come to the heartland of the Malay world, where the language was still 'pure', to collect materials for his Malay-Dutch dictionary. Haji Ibrahim served him as one of his main informants. The letters he wrote to his patron form the centre of the present study: they are published with summaries of their content and introduced by chapters on Malay letterwriting and on the historical background of the published letters. Apart from a discussion in chapter 4 about his role in the political configuration in mid-nineteenth century Riau, where a Malay sultan, a Bugis viceroy and a Dutch resident each promoted their interests, Haji Ibrahim's talents in wielding his quill are discussed in the last chapter. This book is one of the few studies in which the background of a Malay writer is reconstructed. Haji Ibrahim is brought to the fore as a writer who began his career by writing dramatized reports for his superiors, and eventually acquired certain fame with a collection of conversations published in 1868 and 1872. In the oral-oriented Malay world of the nineteenth century, officials such as Haji Ibrahim may well be the initiators of a new literary tradition.
