Download or read book Silence Music Silent Music written by Nicky Losseff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this volume focus on the ways in which silence and music relate, contemplate each other and provide new avenues for addressing and gaining understanding of various realms of human endeavour. The book maps out this little-explored aspect of the sonic arena with the intention of defining the breadth of scope and to introduce interdisciplinary paths of exploration as a way forward for future discourse. Topics addressed include the idea of 'silent music' in the work of English philosopher Peter Sterry and Spanish Jesuit St John of the Cross; the apparently paradoxical contemplation of silence through the medium of music by Messiaen and the relationship between silence and faith; the aesthetics of Susan Sontag applied to Cage's idea of silence; silence as a different means of understanding musical texture; ways of thinking about silences in music produced during therapy sessions as a form of communication; music and silence in film, including the idea that music can function as silence; and the function of silence in early chant. Perhaps the most all-pervasive theme of the book is that of silence and nothingness, music and spirituality: a theme that has appeared in writings on John Cage but not, in a broader sense, in scholarly writing. The book reveals that unexpected concepts and ways of thinking emerge from looking at sound in relation to its antithesis, encompassing not just Western art traditions, but the relationship between music, silence, the human psyche and sociological trends - ultimately, providing deeper understanding of the elemental places both music and silence hold within world philosophies and fundamental states of being. Silence, Music, Silent Music will appeal to those working in the fields of musicology, psychology of religion, gender studies, aesthetics and philosophy.
Download or read book Becoming Aware of Aliens by learning to recognize them Vol 1 written by Angel Jeanne and published by Jessica Puddu. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The real question is not whether Aliens exist or not. They exist! Rather, we should ask ourselves how they are manipulating us and what we can do in order to defend ourselves!” These are the thoughts of a writer who has shared her personal experiences in three profound and intense books. Each volume is supplemented with illustrations and profiles of the most important alien races, and in particular with pictures of real Alien Chips which the author has extracted from her own body. It’s a book that will blow you away, and one that will make you recognize a truth mirrored in your own experience, that which you never dared tell anyone. In this trilogy the author shares her terrifying experience, but also the experiences that filled her with joy. It’s the beginning of an evolution, a howl of rebellion against alien abductions and manipulations, a roar in the face of all those who allow this to happen.

Download or read book In Silence or Indifference written by Wayne A. Wiegand and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Librarians around the country are currently on a battleground, defending their right to purchase and circulate books dealing with issues of race and systemic racism. Despite this work, the library community has often overlooked—even ignored—its own history of White supremacy and deliberate inaction on the part of White librarians and library leadership. Author Wayne A. Wiegand takes a crucial step to amend this historical record. In Silence or Indifference: Racism and Jim Crow Segregated Public School Libraries analyzes and critiques the world of professional librarianship between 1954 and 1974. Wiegand begins by identifying racism in the practice and customs of public school libraries in the years leading up to the Brown v. Board of Education decision. This culture permeated the next two decades, as subsequent Supreme Court decisions led to feeble and mostly unsuccessful attempts to integrate Jim Crow public schools and their libraries. During this same period, the profession was honing its national image as a defender of intellectual freedom, a proponent of the freedom to read, and an opponent of censorship. Still, the community did not take any unified action to support Brown or to visibly oppose racial segregation. As Black school librarians and their Black patrons suffered through the humiliations and hostility of the Jim Crow educational establishment, the American library community remained largely ambivalent and silent. The book brings to light a distressing history that continues to impact the library community, its students, and its patrons. Currently available school library literature skews the historical perspective that informs the present. In Silence or Indifference is the first attempt to establish historical accountability for the systemic racism contemporary school librarianship inherited in the twenty-first century.
