Book excerpt: Dark Blue Down South is a historical novel about the Germans of the Central Texas Hill Country and other Texans who chose to fight for the North in the Civil War. The Texas Germans organized several companies of infantry and started for the Mexican border expecting to sail from Mexico to the North to join a Northern Army. They were intercepted by a Texas Cavalry unit near the Rio Grande River where a fight occurred. A small number of Germans survived the battle, and the execution of prisoners that followed the battle, and crossed into Mexico. These men managed to get to New Orleans, which had just fallen to the North, and joined the United States First Texas Cavalry which was being created from Texans who had chosen to fight for the North. This novel places two young men in this situation, has them hide from the Confederate conscription, flee to the Mexican border with the German infantry, make the voyage to New Orleans, join the U.S. First Texas Cavalry and then fight with that Northern unit for the remaining three years of the Civil War

Book Counting Down Southern Rock

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. Eric Banister
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2016-05-12
  • ISBN : 1442245409
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Counting Down Southern Rock written by C. Eric Banister and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Southern rock acts like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynrd stormed American concert stages, detractors immediately came to the fore declaring the genre to be little more than a marketing gimmick. But those on stage themselves would have called its appearance not only inevitable but also a way of life. In the end, the musicians who played Southern rock reflected a robust and broad variety of influences, drawing deeply from the wellsprings of blues, rock, country, and even jazz. Listeners gravitated to the sounds of the New South, a place that had captured pop culture’s imagination amid the turbulence following President Nixon’s successful Southern strategy and silent majorities. Southern rock garnered a second wave of enthusiasm with the rise of the urban cowboy and Bill Clinton’s ascension to the presidency. For nearly half a century, Southern rock has captured and expressed the energy of the New South, inspiring a legacy that listeners can still hear from jam bands, indie acts, and mainstream country musicians. In Counting Down Southern Rock: The 100 Best Songs, C. Eric Banister considers the best songs to emerge from the bands who made Southern rock what it is. Banister examines the impact of the songs on the society and culture of devoted fans and delves deep into the history and production of each song. Featuring such well-known bands as the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as less visible groups like Blackhorse and Heartsfield, this book is the perfect introduction for both newbies and dedicated fans.

Book Skirts of Navy Blue

Download or read book Skirts of Navy Blue written by Jil Carlson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As far as I was concerned, World War II was a snap despite blackouts, rationing, and no nylons-just tan leg makeup-"Guaranteed not to come off " ...the hem of your dress, the chair you sat on, or your date's trouser legs when dancing. In a burst of patriotism, I joined the WAVES-the Navy's version of the WAACs (only with cuter uniforms), and met some great new friends including "Candy", a movie starlet, and Howard Hughes who I thought was a radio repairman (I didn't catch his last name.) The trip from Los Angeles to Hunter College in New York was a revelation; troop trains do not have dining cars-you march to various "mess halls" from wherever the train halts. I also discovered that the subway does not run from Chicago to NYC.! Candy made boot camp a pleasure. We got to read her fan mail, and her family's chauffeur delivered weekly goodies from Schraft's and Bergdorf Goodman's (her three roommates were the best dressed-lingerie-wise-recruits in the Navy-and the only ones to gain weight inspite of all that marching.) . She also gave me the opportunity of turning down her invitation to have lunch at the Stork club with "little" Gloria Vanderbilt, and see "Carmen Jones", a big Broadway hit. I chose instead to lead a gaggle of misguided recuits in an almost futile attempt to find the Empire State building. Finally, the Navy, overlooking my southern accent and a tendency to address pilots as "honey" ("Take a wave- off, honey"), gave me one of their coveted billets as a Control Tower Operator and sent me to Atlanta, Georgia, for further training, There, I learned to drive a jeep, "fly" a plane (courtesy of the Link trainer) and to be careful where I sat on public streetcars -Jim Crow was alive and well!. Assigned to a small control tower in Corpus Christi, Texas, I met a tall, lanky "radio repairman" who laughed at almost anything I said, and was my good buddy during some dramatic changes in my life. His visits ended when I suddenly marred the "Best pilot" on the base. It was several years before I discovered that my "buddy" had been the elusive Howard Hughes. During the '80s I wrote a weekly column for Roll Call, the Washington, DC newspaper. ("Casandra's Corner" by Jil Carlson), and loved being with Ford's Theatre promoting shows, during the 70s.'The '60s were spent doing my own TV show. "Skirts Of Navy Blue" is pure escapist reading for anyone who has only seen "The War" through John Wayne's eyes.

Book excerpt: To most people, Antarctica is the white smudge at the bottom of a world map. Few realise that it's almost the size of Africa and that its wild weather and currents dominate the planet. Fewer, still, know that Cape Town has been the gateway to Antarctic expeditions for hundreds of years. Cook, Shackleton, Scott and many more all began their southern voyages from Table Bay. This book explores the frozen continent and the voyages of discovery from an African perspective -- and comes up with some surprising connections.

This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most people, planet Earth's icy parts remain out of sight and out of mind. Yet it is the melting of ice that will both raise sea level and warm the climate further by reducing the white surfaces that reflect solar energy back into space. In effect, our icy places act as the world's refrigerator, helping to keep our climate relatively cool. The Icy Planet lays out carbon dioxide's role as the control knob of our climate over the past 1000 million years, then explores what is happening to ice and snow in Antarctica, the Arctic and the high mountains. Colin P. Summerhayes takes readers to the world's icy places to see what is happening to its ice, snow, and permafrost. He recounts tales from his own visits to these frozen landscapes, shining a light on some of the wonders he has encountered in his travels. He also brings together pieces of the climate story from different scientific disciplines, and from the past and the present, to illustrate how Earth's climate system works. Utilizing geological records of climate change alongside new technologies in ice coring, Summerhayes crafts a detailed and compelling record of Earth's climate history and examines how that can be used as a window into our future.

Book Wayne Rooney Always a Blue The Biography

Download or read book Wayne Rooney Always a Blue The Biography written by Ian Macleay and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wayne Rooney, England's record goal scorer, is one of the most feared and respected strikers to have graced the Premier League in the last decade. He is certainly its most famous icon, appearing on the front pages of the newspapers nearly as often as on the back. Wayne started his glittering career as a teenage wonder at Everton, the club he had staunchly supported as a boy. A self-confessed and fiercely passionate blue-blood, Rooney was raised in Croxteth, a product of the rough district just outside the shadow of Goodison Park. After a white-hot start, the teenager joined regional rivals, Manchester United, in a seismic transfer and, in his deeply successful time at Old Trafford, won sixteen major honours, played in three World Cups, married his childhood sweetheart and began a young family, throwing off his reputation as the gifted 'wild-child' of English football. Yet, in the summer of 2017, the prodigal son returned to his first club, providing Evertonians with a sense of pride and football fans everywhere with a classic narrative. His warm reception made it clear that Rooney still has a special place in the hearts of Toffees fans, and the saga embodies the pride and passion that has propelled the Premier League to become the most exciting - and profitable - in the world. Told by veteran football writer Ian MacLeay, this is the definitive story of Rooney's explosive, emotive and turbulent return to Everton Football Club, and the historic season which followed.

Book From the Jungle to the Deep Blue Sea

Download or read book From the Jungle to the Deep Blue Sea written by Jim Hindle and published by Bookmundo. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British forces have had a presence in British Honduras, Belize, or the wider Caribbean since the mid-17th century. This presence has included Royal Navy, Royal Marine, Army and, more recently, the RAF. Over the years, force levels increased and decreased depending on the political situation with Guatemala at the time, and the inherent threat of a possible Guatemalan border confrontation. At times, force levels reached roughly Brigade strength with additional RAF and RN support. Serving in Belize during this time was an exciting experience for most young men. On the one hand you had relatively poor living conditions in some of the camps nearer the Guatemalan border; the harsh and inhospitable jungle when carrying out patrols; the routine task of manning isolated observation posts on the tops of the Maya and Toledo mountains overlooking the Guatemalan border. Once away from the duties of securing the border you had the opportunity to see the gentler side of Belize. From the Jungle to the Deep Blue Sea is a down to earth book about individual memories and experiences of servicemen in Belize.
