Book excerpt: Dante engaged with an extraordinary range of traditions, disciplines and media, and a variety of speech-communities, cultures, genres and media have received his work: from Spain, France and Germany to North America and the Indian sub-continent; and from medieval multilingualism and early modern humanism to contemporary politics, translations and databases. Those multiple contexts and this prolific afterlife form the subject of the book's 27 essays, which have been commissioned from an international group of scholars to mark the 2021Dante centenary. Contributors include members of several historic Dante Societies: The Dante Society of America, (founded 1881); the Deutsche Dante-Gesellschaft (founded 1865); and the Oxford Dante Society (founded 1876); and their essays present a variety of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches to a major transnational poet. Nick Havely is Emeritus Professor of English and Related Literature at the University of York and is an Honorary Member of the Dante Society of America. Jonathan Katz is a Fellow of St Anne's College and Public Orator at the University of Oxford. Richard Cooper is Professor of French at the University of Oxford; Emeritus Fellow of Brasenose College; and Master of St Benet's Hall.

Book excerpt: This volume is centred around the idea that the aim of literature is to build bridges, to bring people together, and to highlight underlying similarities despite the apparent differences in world literatures. As such, the book focuses on the moral purpose of literature and its tendency to overcome divisive forces. It supports the idea of cosmopolitanism, a re-working of the ancient Indian ideal of Vasudhaiva Kuttumbakam, or ‘the world is my home’, a concept close to the African notion of ‘ubuntu’, which refers to an open society (as against a small, enclosed one) and relates to the essence of being human and working for the benefit of a larger community. The book uses examples from texts across geographical and cultural borders, beginning with classics like the Indian epics, the Panchatantra, the Kathasaritsagar, and the Arabian Nights, before moving on to contemporary texts in the age of information technology. Although these may originate against diverse backdrops, they have a commonality that cannot be denied. The stories we tell, the tales we love to hear and repeat, all share certain features which reach out across boundaries of time and space, thus bridging the gap between people and places. Living in today’s globalized world, there is a need to study literature in a broader perspective and to be aware that, though stories may be rooted in a particular time and place, they are still a part of the world heritage and comprise what is called world literature. The book will be of particular interest to scholars studying the art of storytelling, as well as the lay reader passionate about literature.

Book excerpt: In fourteenth-century Italy, literacy became accessible to a significantly larger portion of the lay population (allegedly between 60 and 80 percent in Florence) and provided a crucial means for the vernacularization and secularization of learning, and for the democratization of citizenship. Dante Alighieri's education and oeuvre sit squarely at the heart of this historical and cultural transition and provide an ideal case study for investigating the impact of Latin education on the consolidation of autonomous vernacular literature in the Middle Ages, a fascinating and still largely unexamined phenomenon. On the basis of manuscript and archival evidence, Gianferrari reconstructs the contents, practice, and readings of Latin instruction in the urban schools of fourteenth-century Florence. It also shows Dante's continuous engagement with this culture of teaching in his poetics, thus revealing his contribution to the expansion of vernacular literacy and education. The book argues that to achieve his unprecedented position of authority as a vernacular intellectual, Dante conceived his poetic works as an alternative educational program for laypeople, who could read and write in the vernacular but had little or no proficiency in Latin. By reconstructing the culture of literacy shared by Dante and his lay readers, Dante's Education shifts critical attention from his legacy as Italy's national poet, and a "great books" author in the Western canon, to his experience as a marginal intellectual engaged in advancing a marginal culture.

Book excerpt: One of the main goals of this book is to determine if, in the works of some of the key authors in the history of Italian political philosophy, a notion of “efficacy” can be found. In legal philosophy, “efficacy” is the capacity a norm has to effectively influence citizens’ behavior. The “principle of efficacy” is that according to which an order or rule exists as such when it is followed effectively in practice. Here by “efficacy” I mean the idea that normative phenomena are self-justifying, without reference to extrinsic systems of value (such as “natural law”). The examinations of several texts undertaken here constitute reflections on this theme, without any claim to systematicity. They have been grouped together, roughly in historical order, by their common respect for the contexts within which they reason and reach decisions, which lends them a characteristic flavor of harsh realism that at times relies on a minimalist use of traditional normative categories. The second theme that emerges through the respective chapters (each of which constitutes the text for a lesson in a course for Ph.D. students) is that of the relationship between “equality” and “vulnerability.” Here the idea is to elaborate a concept of “vulnerability” that is not underpinned by what we in Italy call an “anthropology,” that is, a fixed notion of human nature. Instead this concept should be comprehensible and graspable solely on the basis of the recognition of decisions and actions that are merely “efficacious,” that function “for what they are, and what they do.” This recognition doesn’t even need to be explicitly articulated by these authors with any specific, deliberately conscious awareness. The goal is not to identify a precise tradition of thought, one which elaborates a given line of reflection, but rather to highlight certain “themes” that emerge in the texts examined, even as the authors write with and for their own specific, contingent set of motives, which differ from time to time and place to place. These authors include some who are widely known, such as Dante, Machiavelli, and Beccaria. At times they are figures who typify certain key historical episodes, such as the Risorgimento (Giuseppe Mazzini) or Fascism (Cesare Lombroso and Santi Romano), while others reflect certain aspects of a contemporary debate (Pasolini and the “Braibanti affair”). The book is based on lectures given for a 2021 Ph.D. Course at the University of California, Berkeley’s Department of Italian Studies.
