With Poul Henningsen's iconic PH-lamp as its point of departure, the book tells the stories behind 100 Danish lamp designs through text and images. The book introduces the reader to the inventions that enabled the first revolutionizing light sources: from the development of oil and gas lamps to the culmination in the late 19th century with the advent of incandescent light bulbs and Scandinavian functionalism. While architects and lamp designers enjoy the new possibilities afforded by the increasingly versatile LED light sources, the current retro wave has led to renewed interest in early electrical lamps. Vintage lamps fetch high prices, older models are relaunched and a large audience is interested in the history of the lamps. Lighting is a key element in 'hygge' - a warm, cosy ambience - and although Henningsen was a functionalist to the core, he had no intention of doing away with hygge. Hygge is a hot topic today, both in Denmark and abroad. Danish lamp design is not only about form. Although hard-core functionalists called for form to follow function, and function alone, real-life factors required them to compromise, and this compromise came to define Danish lamp design: hygge is a crucial quality that has to be included in the design. Thus, the purpose of the modern Danish lamp was - and is - not only to provide light but also to act as a decorative element and to spread a cosy ambience in Danish homes

Book excerpt: The history of modern design and architecture has seen many attempts to embrace and merge different art forms, and to bring art into the framing of everyday life and the organisation of modern society, in a process understood as total design or total architecture. These attempts were historically based on the romanticist idea of merging all art forms into a uniting and transgressing work of art, mostly associated with – but certainly not limited to – Richard Wagner’s theoretical writings and musical dramas. This utopian dream of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or Total Work of Art, was intended both to bring unity to the people and to bring art into the everyday life of their homes, as well as into factories, cities and even modern media. As a result, the experiments ranged from music, poetry and drama to architecture, design, visual communication and city-planning. These ideas of merging art forms into more immersive and transgressive installations or design interventions to change everyday life are widespread today, but their complex and often problematic roots are mostly ignored. Design and architecture have delivered some of the broadest and most influential experiments with the Gesamtkunstwerk, from garden cities for workers and corporate identity design to the German AEG corporation.

Tourism now features as a major source of income for the territory alongside fisheries. Cruise tourism is increasing rapidly, and might superficially appear to be best suited to Greenlandic conditions, given the lack of large-scale accommodation infrastructure and almost non-existent land routes between settlements. Ironically, one of the most spectacular tourist attractions is the large number of icebergs that are being calved as the result of glacier retreat and ice cap melting, both appearing to be taking place at ever increasing rates. As a consequence of ice removal, the territory's claimed extensive range of mineral resources, not least rare earth elements and hydrocarbons, are becoming more accessible for exploitation and, thereby, are acting increasingly as the focus for geopolitical competition. This book explores the nature of dynamics between tourism, climate change and the geopolitics of natural resource exploitation in the Arctic and examines their interrelationships specifically in the critical context of Greenland, but within a framework that emphasises the wider global implications of the outcomes of such interrelationships.
