Download or read book Collected Essays written by Grå Borup-Nielsen and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is a perusal of subjects that are relevant to humanistic studies. American education in relation to European educators is the focus of one article. The question of Latin and its use in reading Virgil, Kipling and T.S. Eliot is approached, and figures such as John Dewey and Winston Churchill are highlighted. While the writings are too diverse to be characterized by a specific theme, various facets of education are explored, and most essays bear insight into the American experience. Collected Essays, while easily accessible to the lay reader with an interest in these topics, will be especially pertinent to educators, students of American history and students of literature.

Book John A Collected Essays 2

Download or read book John A Collected Essays 2 written by John Scales Avery and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of essays and articles by John Scales Avery discussing the severe problems and challenges which the world faces during the 21st century. Human civilization and the biosphere are threatened by catastrophic climate change. Unless rapid steps are taken to replace fossil fuels by 100% renewable energy, we risk passing a tipping point beyond which uncontrollable feedback loops could produce a 6th extinction event comparable to those observed in the geological record. Another serious threat to human civilization and the biosphere is the danger of a catastrophic thermonuclear war. Over a long period of time there is an ever-increasing risk that such a war will occur by accident or miscalculation. Thirdly, there is threat of an extremely serious and widespread famine, produced by the climate change, rapidly-growing populations, and the end of the fossil fuel era. We must urgently address all three challenges.

Book Denmark and Europe in the Middle Ages c 1000 1525

Download or read book Denmark and Europe in the Middle Ages c 1000 1525 written by Kerstin Hundahl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where medieval Denmark and Scandinavia as a whole has often been seen as a cultural backwater that passively and belatedly received cultural and political impulses from Western Europe, Professor Michael H. Gelting and scholars inspired by him have shown that the intellectual, religious and political elite of Denmark actively participated in the renaissance and reformation of the central and later medieval period. This work has wide ramifications for understanding developments in medieval Europe, but so far the discussion has taken place only in Danish-language publications. This anthology brings the latest research in Danish medieval history to a wider audience and integrates it with contemporary international discussions of the making of the European middle ages.

Book Personal Narratives Peripheral Theatres Essays on the Great War 1914 18

Download or read book Personal Narratives Peripheral Theatres Essays on the Great War 1914 18 written by Anthony Barker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays on neglected aspects of the Great War. It begins by asking what exactly was so "Great" about it, before turning to individual studies of various aspects of the war. These fall broadly into two categories. Firstly personal, micro-narratives that deal directly with the experience of war, often derived from contemporary interest in diaries and oral histories. Presenting both a close-up view of the viscerality, and the tedium and powerlessness of personal situations, these same narratives also address the effects of the war on hitherto under-regarded groups such as children and animals. Secondly, the authors look at the impact of the course of the war on theatres, often left out in reflections on the main European combatants and therefore not part of the regular iconography of the trenches in places such as Denmark, Canada, India, the Levant, Greece and East Africa.
