Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dangers of the Trail in 1865: A Narrative of Actual Events I present this narrative of actual events on a trip across the plains to Denver, Colorado, in 1865 and of life in the Far West in the later sixties. An interesting and valuable feature is a map of the country, made in 1865, by Henry Bowles of Boston, showing the old Platte River and Smoky Hill Trails of that day before there was a railroad west of the Missouri River. Everything is told in a plain but truthful manner, and this little volume is submitted to the reader for approval or criticism. Book excerpt: Early in 1859 gold was discovered in Colorado, and Horace Greeley, the well known writer and a power throughout the country both before and during the Civil War, made, in the interest of the New York Tribune, of which he was editor, an overland trip to Denver by the first stage line run in that day. He started from Leavenworth, Kansas, and with the exception of Mr. Richardson, of the Boston Journal, was the only passenger in the coach. The trip was not all that could be desired, for they met with numerous hardships and many narrow escapes, as did hundreds of others who had preceded them over that dangerous trail, many never reaching their destination—having met death at the hands of the cruel Indians of the plains.

Book Dee Brown on the Civil War

Download or read book Dee Brown on the Civil War written by Dee Brown and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three true tales of Civil War combat, as recounted by a #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. The acclaimed historian of the American West turns his attention to the country’s bloody civil conflict, chronicling the exploits of extraordinary soldiers who served in unexpected ways at a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. Grierson’s Raid: The definitive work on one of the most astonishing missions of the Civil War’s early days. For two weeks in the spring of 1862, Col. Benjamin Grierson, a former music teacher, led 1,700 Union cavalry troops on a raid from Tennessee to Louisiana. The improbably successful mission diverted Confederate attention from Grant’s crossing of the Mississippi and set the stage for the Siege of Vicksburg. General Sherman called it “the most brilliant expedition of the war.” The Bold Cavaliers: In 1861, Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan and his brother-in-law Basil Duke put together a group of formidable horsemen, and set to violent work. Morgan’s Raiders began in their home state, staging attacks, recruiting new soldiers, and intercepting Union telegraphs. Most were imprisoned after unsuccessful incursions into Ohio and Indiana years later, but some Raiders would escape, regroup, and fight again in different conflicts. “Accurate and frequently exciting” (Kirkus Reviews). The Galvanized Yankees: The little-known and awe-inspiring true story of a group of captured Confederate soldiers who chose to serve in the Union Army rather than endure the grim conditions of prisoner of war camps. “An accurate, interesting, and sometimes thrilling account of an unusual group of men who rendered a valuable service to the nation in a time of great need” (The New York Times Book Review).

Book Mystery of 5MR18 at the Narrows on the South Platte River

Download or read book Mystery of 5MR18 at the Narrows on the South Platte River written by J. Michael Geiger and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few mysteries are solved without questions remaining. This mystery too will leave the reader asking for more information about wagon life during the western migration, the draw of gold fields, and the lure of business and political ties, and much more. In all mysteries there is the intrigue and mental gymnastics of uncertainty, folklore, obscurity of fact. Our imagination leads us to travel the pathways provided by betrayal, greed, inference, and conjecture. These building footprints, forgotten and left to be covered by sand and time, provided the primary evidence of an untold piece of Colorado's story. The footprints have been sitting in the sand, unrecognized and unheralded, even their birth story was unknown. Are these relics of the past centuries old, or merely decades? There was no known current recognition, no known builder, purpose, history or name identity. Their history and the story they represent covers more than six states, and although just footprints, they may have been unique and of major significance for the period. They also could signify something to decorate the pages of infamy and betrayal. As the trail winds through many states, false leads, and familiar pioneer names, there emerges a sense of historical significance pointing to even more historical associations and questions. There is intrigue regarding those involved with what these building footprints represent, from life on the prairie, to those desiring fame and fortune by spinning their influence from Colorado to Washington DC. only to find that today, in many aspects, this story continues.
